Mrs. Bowyer | EDHS Greek Vocabulary List 1 Root 1: agog—leader 1. demagogue (noun): a leader who manipulates people and prays on their fears in order to gain support The demagogue used lies to manipulate his subjects into supporting him. 2. pedagogue (noun): teacher; leader of children The woman had studied pedagogy in college and had been a pedagogue at EDHS for 30 years. 3. synagogue (noun): a Jewish house of worship Upon entering the synagogue, I noticed it was filled with a reverent silence. Root 2: agon—struggle; contest 4. agonize (verb): to be in extreme pain or to suffer great anguish (suffering or pain); to make a great effort; to struggle She agonized over the decorations for her party, making sure they were perfect. 5. antagonist (noun): one who opposes or competes with another; in literature, the character opposing the protagonist The antagonist in Of Mice and Men is Curly because he works against George and Lenny. 6. protagonist (noun): the leading character in any literary work; the champion or leader of a cause Many people believe that the protagonist, or main character, in R omeo and Juliet is Romeo. Root 3: anthrop—man 7. misanthrope (noun): a hater of all mankind (or people) The misanthrope was always rude to people he met and never gave anyone the benefit of the doubt. 8. anthropology (noun/ adj): the study of man The anthropology student was able to travel to India to work on an archeological dig. 9. philanthropy (noun): the love of mankind; charity The philanthropist often practiced philanthropy and gave to her favorite charities every month. Root 4: amt, anti—against; opposite 10. antonym (noun): a word with the opposite meaning of another word (light/ dark) “Beautiful” is an antonym for “ugly”. 11. antipathy (noun): a strong feeling of aversion, repugnance, or opposition; a deep feeling a hatred She felt great antipathy for mathematics because it was a subject in which she did not often excel. 12. antagonize (verb): to act in opposition to or against; to make hostile Her younger brother seemed to take pleasure in antagonizing her daily.
