As a former Professor in fire safety engineering and mechanical engineering and currently as a chartered professional engineer he has conducted fire safety research and designed numerous commercial, residential and special purpose buildings. Jonathan is an experienced expert witness who has investigated and testified about building defects and fires worldwide. Patrick Beaumont BRIC Patrick Beaumont is the Manager of the Financial Lines Unit at Bovill Risk & Insurance Consultants (BRIC) and has been arranging professional indemnity for building surveyors since 2004. BRIC is the recommended insurance broker for AIBS members. Chris Gildersleeve Arup Chris Gildersleeve is a Principal of Arup and former leader of Arup’s fire engineering business in Australasia. He has led many building and infrastructure design teams in Australasia, Europe and East Asia. He combines a broad structural and civil engineering design knowledge with specialist skills in structural fire engineering. Chris is committed to providing pro-active and creative design input to all projects in which he is involved. His specialist expertise in structural fire engineering is sought out by clients throughout the region and has contributed to a wide range of innovative design solutions. Assoc. Prof. Geoff Boughton TimberED Geoff is Director of TimberED Services, a company that provides structural consultancy services to the Australian building industry. He has a PhD in Structural Engineering for work on wind loads on housing at the Cyclone Testing Station, James Cook University, and previously held an academic role at Curtin University for 13 years. Geoff is also an adjunct associate professor in the School of Engineering, James Cook University and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers and a member of both the Australasian Wind Engineering Society and the Australian Earthquake Engineering Society. Geoff has been involved in teams that have investigated damage to buildings following extreme wind events including tropical cyclones and severe storms in the south west of WA. He has contributed to training in all natural disasters at AEMI and has contributed to disaster resistant construction in the Pacific rim. JoeManton Institute of Access Training Australia Joe is a highly regarded leader and innovator in the access industry with more than 30 years’ experience working across an extensive range of organisations to address access challenges. She is an eagerly sought after presenter and trainer who delivers the only nationally recognised qualification in Australia in relation to access to the built environment. She developed and delivers the Certificate IV in Access Consulting and Diploma of Access Consulting that are acclaimed by many people working in the access and other related industries. IATA received the Corporate Vision Best Universal Access Consultants Award – Australia 2015. AIBS QLD/NT Chapter Conference 2016 Page 6 QLD/NT Chapter Conference 2016 9-11 June 2016 - Hotel Grand Chancellor, Brisbane David Bell OneSteel David Bell is a structural engineer with OneSteel and has worked in a number of design, development, engineering and marketing positions in Melbourne and Sydney. His current role has a focus on optimised project solutions for the Australian construction industry, as well as a broader development and education role in areas such as structural engineering, compliance, sustainability and product development. Dr Benoit Gilbert Griffith School of Engineering Dr Benoit Gilbert obtained a master of engineering in 2001 in France and a PhD in Structural Engineering from the University of Sydney in 2010. He is now a senior lecturer and Australian Research Council (ARC) research fellow (DECRA) at Griffith University. His research interests lie in steel and timber structures, with an emphasis in light and efficient structures. He is currently developing timber structures using early to mid-rotation hardwood plantation eucalyptus logs. Darryl O’Brien CQUniversity Darryl is currently a lecturer in Building Surveying and Built Environment at CQUniversity. Prior to taking on the CQU lecturing position Darryl was a private certifier and planning consultant involved in a range of significant building developments. Darryl holds bachelor degrees in both Building Surveying and Building Design and a Master’s degree in Environmental Planning and is a current PHD candidate. Jeffrey Brooks AIBS National President Jeffrey has been in the construction industry for 29 years working as a licensed plumber, carpenter and elevating to the positions of Construction Manager and Project Manager in government and the private sector. For the last 17 years he has worked in Building Surveying and is Company Director of Eastcoast Building Approvals operating in QLD and SA. Jeffrey has completed Post Graduate qualifications in Construction Management and Building Surveying, and hopes to complete his Masters in Business Administration in the next few years. He is the QLD/NT Director for the Australian Institute of Building Surveyors and was elected to the position of National President of AIBS in 2012. Dr. Paola Ponitti Europa Futuring Group Dr Paolo Ponitti is Founding President of the Europa Futuring Group which is dedicated to disseminating information about the future of leading, managing and getting his clients to create what he calls their “preferred future”. Paolo will speak on what type of traits and mindset the “Building Surveyor of the Future” will need to embrace in an ever changing environment. He will also show all of us how we can develop game-changing strategies aimed at facilitating us to become fully engaged both in work and in life in order to create again what he calls our “preferred future”. Paolo encourages all of us to not only manage our time but also our energy. So will building surveyors shape the future or will the future shape building surveyors? Paolo has both a Masters in Business Leadership and Neuropsychology from Cambridge University, a dual degree he completed over five years ago between consulting roles. His responsibilities include building policy and legislation. A particular focus of his work in his current role is non-conforming building products. Matthew has worked in the Queensland Public Service since 2005 in strategic policy and legislative development positions. This has included roles in the Office of the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and the Departments of Employment and Industrial Relations, Housing, Communities, Environment and Heritage Protection and the Premier and Cabinet. Paul Gordon HWL Ebsworth Lawyers Paul has been a partner in the building and construction team at the national firm of HWL Ebsworth since 2000 and practised solely in construction since 1995. During that time Paul has been involved in some of Queensland’s largest building and infrastructure projects but also held a keen interest in the certification industry and building regulation. Paul is regularly consulted by government in respect to building legislation and has advised the QBCC for 20 years in all aspects of its business. Paul is the Queensland Law Society’s representative on the Building Industry Consultative Group. Brett Mace AIBS Chief Executive Officer Brett joined the AIBS in May 2013 and became CEO in September 2013 bringing 25+ years professional management experience in both the commercial and notfor-profit sectors. Brett’s background has been primarily in sport first as a Physical Training Instructor in the Royal Australian Navy, before undertaking a number of management roles at state, national and international level. Prior to AIBS, as High Performance Manager with Equestrian Australia, Brett led and managed successful Olympic (Beijing & London), Paralympic and World Championship campaigns that achieved a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, gold at the 2012 London Paralympics, along with gold, silver and bronze world championship medals in 2006 and 2010. Philip is a strong advocate of the benefits to both industry and the public from specialised, verification-based certification of construction materials, having witnessed the results of poor materials performance during a career spanning 30-years across engineering design and specification, building construction, insurance loss control, materials supply and product certification. Guy’s life journey started as a Clown / Acrobat / Juggler in a world renowned Circus. Tony Townshend has been a building surveyor for over 39 years. In that time he has seen building certification evolve including moving from the public sector to a mixture of both public and private sectors. He is also an Olympic Water Polo Athlete having competed at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. In 1995 Guy achieved his biggest goal – voted the best in the world in his position.
