“I am the light of the world, says the LORD;
whoever follows me will have the light of life.”
-John 8:12
February 5, 2017
Word from the Pastor
also “salt”. It is being said that, once, while he was
playing, someone asked St. Aloysius Gonzaga what
would he do if he knew that within a few minutes he
would die. “I would keep on playing,” he answered.
He would go on carrying out his normal everyday life,
and making life pleasant for his play pals.
Today the Gospel clearly urges us to become
witnesses to Christ. It invites us in two different ways,
which, apparently, may look contradictory: the salt
and the light.
The salt cannot be seen but can be perceived; it can
be tasted, relished. There are many persons that
“can hardly be perceived”, as they are like “little
ants” working and doing good all the time. At their
side one can savor peace, serenity and joy. As it is
said at present, their “radiations” are good.
Light, however, cannot be hidden. There are persons
that “can be seen from afar”: Saint Mother Teresa of
Calcutta, the Pope, a bishop. They hold important
positions because of their natural leadership or
because of their concrete priesthood. They are
“brought into the limelight”. As today's Gospel says
“on top of a mountain» or on a «lamp stand”(cf. Mt
5:14-15).
We are all called to be light. We are quite clearly so
when we avow our own faith in difficult moments.
Martyrs are great luminaries.
And in certain
environments, today, the mere fact of attending
Mass may be the subject of jokes and general
mockery. Going to Mass is truly to be “light”. And
light is always detected and seen, no matter how
small it may be. A little light may change the night.
The world will care little about our theology, or our
faith, until they see that faith put into action. They
will not care how much we know until they know
how much we care. This is the reason Jesus sent us
with a cup of cold water, or winter clothes or a
Habitat for Humanity hammer.
And so God is
sending us.
It is as if God were a great Director of the play of Life.
LIGHTS! ACTION!
So, what are you waiting for?
rolling….
We are all called to be salt and light. For over 30
years of his hidden life in Nazareth, Jesus himself was
St. Joseph’s Mission Statement
The members of St. Joseph’s Parish believe that Jesus Christ
is the focal point of a caring Christian Community. The
mission of our Parish Family, therefore, is to create, maintain,
nurture, and foster an environment that will encourage us,
and assist us in reaching our full potential through growth in
the knowledge and image of Christ in every facet of our
lives.
Challenged by life-long learning and affirmed by active
participation, St. Joseph’s Parish Family proclaims boldly the
Word of God, and with abounding joy celebrates the Holy
Eucharist—the summit of Christian worship and spirituality—
and through outreach, supports and ministers to the
community at large.

Forgiveness
The advice, “forgive and forget” isn’t easy to follow.
Forgiveness means letting go of your anger so you are
free to heal. Do you need to forgive anyone? Pray for
the grace to forgive as God forgives you: freely, totally,
and quickly.
He who knows how to forgive prepares for himself many
graces from God. As often as I look upon the cross, so
often will I forgive with all my heart. -St. Faustina

SJCC "UNBOUND" Ministry Starting Soon
Our parish is introducing a new ministry
called ”Unbound." This healing prayer
ministry is about freedom. It guides us to
respond to the Gospel in our personal life
and to open our hearts more fully to
Jesus.
The 5 keys we use are: repentance,
forgiveness,
renunciation,
taking
authority, and the Father’s Blessing. These
keys are tools we can use in our spiritual
battle to help us grow in personal relationship with Jesus.
Our primary purpose is for the person receiving prayer to be
listened to, accepted and loved. This prayer encourages us
to surrender and to take hold of the freedom that Christ
offers us.
All are welcome and invited to make an appointment. For
more information or to schedule a one-hour, confidential
prayer appointment starting Monday, February 13, from 7:00
-9:00 p.m., please contact parishioner Mary Rousseau at:
[email protected].

The Catholic Couple Checkup will help you and your
partner build a more satisfying and intimate
relationship. Whether you are dating, engaged or
married, the Couple Checkup is valuable and

thoughts and attitudes about your relationship. It is
designed to activate dialogue, discovery, and
increase the overall quality of your relationship.
Dr. Gary Chapman’s best-selling book, The 5 Love

give and expect to receive love. A couple may be
very much in love, but not “communicating” or
expressing that love in a way they understand or that
truly fulfills and builds them up.

Career Connections
Most people will have 5 or more job changes during
their career. A job search requires specific skills not
required in many types of jobs. Career Connections
can help you learn the skills that are critical in finding
the job you want, whether you are in need of a job
now, or currently employed and seeking a change to
a new company or a new position with your current
employer.
We provide instruction and ongoing
coaching on the skills you will need to successfully
execute a job search. Skills that are reviewed at every
meeting include: handling the emotional impact of
an unexpected layoff, inventorying your marketable
skills, creating your job search plan, networking the
correct way, resumé writing, interview preparation
and salary negotiation. We meet every Thursday at
7:00 p.m. in the Cody Enrichment Center (except
holidays and Church Holy days).

Bishop John J. Snyder High School
February 9, 8:30 a.m. Snyder 101 is a morning program
geared to parents and guardians of prospective
students at Bishop John J. Snyder High School. You will
have the opportunity to meet our principal and
administrators to learn about our college-preparatory
academics, visit classrooms and meet our students.
You are also invited to stay for lunch! Call Mary Anne
Briggs at 904-908-8964 to RSVP.
The Faculty, Staff, and
Students of St. Joseph Catholic
School would like to thank
everyone who contributed to
the Catholic Schools Week
second collection in support
of the school. The generosity
of our parish is always amazing
to witness, but the prayers and
donations for the school were
so incredibly kind. We are
grateful for your support and
will keep all the members of St.
Joseph Parish in our prayers.
A Knights of Columbus council can work wonders; in
fact, with its many programs, it can help change the
community, town, city or our neighborhood right
here in Mandarin. And in our council right here at
Saint Joseph’s our members are committed to
sharing with any catholic gentleman who will listen,
the reason each one of us made the decision to join
the Knights of Columbus.
So, when you see
someone wearing a knight’s shirt, hat or lapel pin
why not ask him one question. Why did you
become a knight?
When you do finally
decide, and take that
leap
of
faith
to
become a Knight of
Columbus you will be
doing something not
just for yourself and
your relationship with
God, but for your
entire family. So here
is a gift from us to your
family. This is a PDF book titled “The Family Full of
Life” Building the Domestic Church. Don’t click on
this, you must type it in your browser. bit.ly/2family
Also, we wanted you to have an easy way to learn
more about our council here at St. Joseph’s just in
case you feel uncomfortable approaching a Knight.
We created a short online web page with a video
to give you a good simple explanation of who we
are, what we do and why we do it. From here you
can request to be contacted for more information.
From your smart phone just scan this
bqr code. (Did you know that with
most new phones you just open your
camera and it will recognize this
and go to the site automatically.)
Or, if you prefer, just text the word
“kofcinfo” to the number 69696. This
will get you to the same place. We hope that you
will just take a few minutes to learn more about who
we, the Knights of Columbus, are.
For more information on how you can help make a
positive difference in your Church, in your
Community, in your Faith, and in your personal life,
ask any Knight, he will be happy to assist you. Or
text or call Grand Knight Ed Kiely at 904-509-2550 or
call Membership director, Bruce Allen at 904-8746633.
An evil report he shall not fear; his heart is firm, trusting in the LORD.
The Boy Scouts of America designates the weekend before
February 8 (Scouting’s Anniversary Day) as “Scout Saturday”
and “Scout Sunday” – a special time for chartering
organizations to recognize the Scouting contributions of their
young people and adult volunteers.
The Catholic Church understands that Scouting has a
significant potential for developing Christian leadership.
Scouting is critical in today’s world as a unique opportunity for
young people to grow in faith, life, and leadership.
The Boy Scouts of America affirms its commitment of “Duty to
God” in its Scout Oath and in the twelfth point of the Scout
Law which states “A Scout is Reverent”.
St. Joseph’s Catholic Church is proud to serve as a Chartering
Organization with the North Florida Council, Boy Scouts of
America. Our Church is home to Cub Scout Pack 473, which is
open to boys in the first through fifth grades, and Boy Scout
Troop 473, which serves boys ages 11-17.

Are you interested in learning more about the
Catholic Church? Are you baptized but have
never received formal religious education or
embraced any specific church and are
considering a personal relationship with God? Are
you not baptized but recognize a need for
spirituality in your life?
Are you married or
engaged to a Catholic, do you already attend
Mass, and want to further your life in the Church?
Are you answering a call to become Catholic but
are not sure how or where to begin? Please
contact Roger or Linda Lestina at 303-5799.
Adult Confirmation
Confirmation is one of the steps toward full
initiation into the Christian Community. It seals
and strengthens our baptism so that we can live
as adult members of the Church. Confirmation
affords us the grace to minister Christ’s love to
all whom we meet throughout the course of our
lives. We hope that you will consider enrolling in
Adult Confirmation classes at St. Joseph’s.
Bishop Estévez will confer the Sacrament of
Confirmation on adults on Sunday, June 4, at a
2:00 p.m. Mass in the Cathedral Basilica of St.
Augustine. If you are 18 years of age or older,
have been baptized, and have received First
Holy Communion in the Catholic Church, have
not received Confirmation, and would like to
know more about this process, please contact
Deacon
Kevin
at
[email protected].

-Psalm 95 (94):6-7
O come, let us worship God and bow low before the God who made us, for he is the Lord our God.
Lavishly he gives to the poor; his justice shall endure forever; his horn shall be exalted in glory.

also need to take a full course of Natural Family Planning. Pre-registration
