*March Builders Theme: Believing in my Ability to Succeed
In this week’s assembly Mr. O’Brien talked about belief:
Belief… is a fascinating notion! What is it exactly? It’s confidence. It’s assurance. It’s courage. It’s tenacity. It’s
expectation. Belief is powerful!
Belief shapes and changes your life experiences, which come from all of the many ideas that you gather and
make yours throughout your lifetime. Then when you believe something inside, it becomes part of you and your
choices. It creates your character!
Remember that you build yourself better as you change old beliefs that don’t serve you any longer with new
ones that positively have impact your life. And here is the most important part to remember... beliefs can be
either limiting or empowering. The truth is, there are no real barriers or limitations but only those that you
believe. Once you realize this truth, the door to unlimited possibilities swings wide open and you will feel
empowered to achieve or conquer anything you set your mind to.

2016-2017 Priority Enrollment
If you have new siblings of current students (including kindergarten) that you would like to be considered for
priority enrollment at APA, or you wish to request a transfer, click on the following link and follow the
instructions: http://goo.gl/forms/XX2P1mnG4x. This link will allow you to apply for new kindergarten
students, new siblings in any grade, transfers, and/or notify us that your students are not re-enrolling.
To be considered for the first lottery you will need to enter this information as soon as possible. We will
hold a lottery in March for siblings.
Open Enrollment for New Families
If you know of a family who is interested in enrolling their students in APA next year, let them know they can
register online through our website at www.americanprep.org. They just click on the Enrollment tab and fill out
the online form. Remind them to select the Salem campus - this will put them on our waiting list for next year!
It’s that simple! We also have fliers you may pick up at the front office to give to interested families.
*Great News! SB 38 has been approved by the House and Senate!
At 2:11 Wednesday afternoon, the Utah Senate concurred with SB38 (4th Substitute). The bill passed! We have
achieved our objective!
The next stop is the Governor's desk, where he is fully expected to sign the bill into law.
Thanks to all who have worked so hard to make this possible. As the bill is implemented over the next
three years, charter students will see a significant increase in funding.
After the Legislators have had a few days to recover from the session, we'll ask for your help to send them a
huge wave of gratitude. We want them to know that charter advocates are long-term allies in improving public
education in Utah.
Congratulations!

Remember: Charter students are worth just as much as other public school students!

Ambassadors
*We are excited to announce our 70’s Flashback event for the Secondary students. This event focuses on
dealing with stress, how to give sincere gratitude, aiming for greatness, and proper etiquette at a reception. This
is our last event prior to our balls. The event will be held on March 17 from 11:30-2:15. We need 8 parent
volunteers as team leaders to take a group of students from one station to the next. This volunteer opportunity
is not suitable for young children. If you have any further questions regarding this event, please feel free to
contact Mrs. Denning at [email protected]. This is the last event before ball season for our junior high
students. Please come and see what our Ambassador program has to offer to our students!
Looking ahead, we will be having a 5th-6th grade event on March 24. We will need 8 parent volunteers for this
event as well. We cannot do the things we do without your support, so each time you volunteer your ensure the
success of this great program.
7th – 9th Grade Balls
Here is a reminder for parents regarding the upcoming balls for the 7th- 9th grade students.
•
•
•
The 7th grade ball will be April 15 from 11:00am – 1:30pm. It will be held at the Utah Cultural
Celebration Center in West Valley. Students will be taking the bus there. They will eat their lunches at
the facility. Dress for this event is “Business Attire.” See below for explanation of dress.
The 8th grade ball will be held April 15 from 5:30-10:00. This will be a dinner and dance. Students will
need to be at the school no later than 4:15 in order to ride the bus. The dress for this event is also
“Business Attire.” Please see below.
The 9th grade ball is again at La Caille in Salt Lake. We do not have the exact date, but it will be in May.
This is also a “Business Attire” event.
DRESS: Young men are expected to wear slacks, shirt and tie. Young ladies can wear dresses that are not their
uniform. Dress check will be held Monday, April 11. The requirements are:
•
•
•
•
length - when kneeling, the hem must touch the floor when kneeling.
midriff - when raising arms or leaning forward to touch knees, tops/blouses should not ride up to show midriff
sleeves - shoulders should be covered
neck line - when your daughter puts her thumbs under her arm pits (like the chicken dance) and then places her
pointer fingers facing each other across her upper chest, this is the lowest point allowed.
If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Denning at [email protected]. We understand the girls
like to wear something other than their uniforms, but it is important that the dress is appropriate for the
activities, that it and does not distract, and that it doesn’t make others feel uncomfortable.
Please contact Lisa Denning if you are interested in earning volunteer hours helping with our Ambassadors:
[email protected]. Thank you!

*Summer Band
This summer, from June 20th until July 29th, APA Salem will be offering a Summer Band Class. This is for all
students entering 6th grade or higher.
There will be two band classes, a beginning and an intermediate, which will meet Monday through Friday at
11 am and 12 noon, respectively. This will be a great chance for students to improve their playing abilities
during the summer or to try out a new instrument.
Registration will be $40 per student for the whole summer. Please contact Mr. Miller for more information at
[email protected].
Library Books
Unfortunately, sometimes library or textbooks get lost or damaged and a charge is issued. The payments of
these fines help us keep books in our classroom libraries and provide the replacement textbooks for students to
use. If there are questions about different payment options or concerns, please contact Heather Thomas, the
Curriculum Specialist, for help. You can email her at [email protected], or call 801-465-4434 ext. 144.
Please remember that the school is only able to accept fines, rather than replacements, for lost/damaged books.
Box Tops Competition
*There are three weeks left for our box top competition!! Mr. Herrick's class is still in the lead with Ms.
Thiriot's class in second. However, Ms. Averett's class is coming up fast and giving Mrs. Thiriot’s class a run for
their money! Please remember to put the teacher's name on the bag or envelope of box tops so that I can credit
that class their box tops. Also, don't forget labels for education also count (and they are discontinuing the
program.) If you have any labels floating around, send those in - the deadline is sneaking up on us. Have fun,
and thanks for your efforts!
Great Schools Website
If you are having a GREAT APA experience, why not tell the world about it? Please take a moment to make a
comment on the Great Schools website at http://www.greatschools.org/utah/salem/1846-AmericanPreparatory-Academy-Salem. Thank you for the positive responses!
*Substitute Training
We are looking for YOU!! Would you like to have a work schedule the same as your student’s school schedule?
Do you enjoy helping at APA? Have you thought about getting trained and being paid to be a substitute? We
are looking for some amazing people to come in and learn to teach our wonderful students. A degree is not
required, just a desire to learn the routine and to teach our wonderful students. Even if you can only help a
couple days a week, we are more than happy to have you! If you are interested, contact Stasi Garrett by email at
[email protected], or by phone at 801-465-4434 ext. 100. We love to see our parents trained to be our
subs!

*St. Patrick’s Day Dress Guidelines
We have had many students ask us, “What can we wear on St. Patrick’s Day that is green?” Here are the
guidelines:
· Full uniform dress is required (including shoes)
· Students may wear green socks
· Students may wear non-distracting green jewelry (one necklace or one bracelet)
· Students may wear a green sticker
· Girls can wear a green hair bow
· Students may NOT color their hair green
· Students may NOT paint anything green on their face or neck
· Students may NOT wear hats, scarves, glasses, or anything that is not part of our school uniform
· Students wearing anything that is a distraction to learning (listed above or not) will be asked to change
before entering class.
PLEASE REMIND YOUR STUDENTS THAT PINCHING IS NOT ALLOWED at APA for any reason –
on St. Patrick’s Day or any other school day. Although some students believe it is an acceptable tradition to
pinch or punch another student who is not wearing green on St. Patrick’s Day, it is not part of our “Builder
Community” at APA. Any student who pinches or punches another student at school (for any reason) will
be in violation of our school Code of Conduct.
Student Lunches
*You may order milk for your student and it will be delivered to the classroom at lunch time. The cost is $.25 a
day, and the choices are chocolate or white. Milk cannot be purchased online; however, there is a form that is
available at the front office, the lunch room, or by requesting it from Mrs. Lane by email. She can be reached at
