National Expectations for Literacy
Reading
By the beginning of Year 4 children should
be using a range of strategies to read with
fluency, understanding and some expression. They should
be able to infer things from the text, as well as discussing
and sharing opinions about a variety of books.
By the end of Year 4 we would expect children to be able to
identify and comment on different types of language used
by authors. They should be beginning to infer things from a
text and back this inference up with evidence from what
they have read.
Writing
When starting Year 4 it is expected that children are using
ambitious vocabulary in their writing, using full stops and
capital letters securely, as well as beginning to use other
forms of punctuation. They should be giving the reader extra information by including adverbs and similes in their story writing. Their handwriting should be neat, legible and
joined.
By the conclusion of Year 4 we hope children would begin
to use speech punctuation and organise their work into
paragraphs. They would include relevant ideas and
content based on the genre being studied. They would
make regular attempts to elaborate on basic information
or events, making their writing more interesting for the
readers.
Welcome to Year 4!
National Expectations for Maths
This booklet has been designed to give you an overview
of the expectations of a child during Year 4. This will
differ from child to child, and children will work to their
own individual targets during the year.
When starting Year 4, it would be
expected that the majority of children
would be able to understand place value of
numbers to 1000, and use this to help them in calculations, as well as recognising a wider range of
fractions. We would expect them to be adding
and subtracting two digit numbers mentally and
beginning to use written methods to help them
solve calculation questions.
In Year 4 we have daily maths and
literacy lessons, which usually take place in the
morning. The children have opportunities to work
individually, in pairs and in groups. Children will be given homework and spellings once a week, as well as
reading books to be read for around fifteen minutes a
day. Please continue to use the Level 2 and 3 maths
skills booklet as appropriate.
In addition, Year 4 have weekly ICT and
music lessons, and PE twice a week. The
children will have a topic lesson and a science
lesson each week, and these topics will change on a
termly or half termly basis.

By the end of Year 4, we would expect children to
inconfidently solve 2 and 3 digit addition and
creased
subtraction questions using written methods.
underThey should multiply and divide two digit numstanding
bers by 2, 3, 4 or 5 as well as 10 with whole number
answers and remainders. Furthermore they
should use mental recall of addition and subtraction facts to 20 when solving problems involving
larger
numbers. We would also expect children to begin
to recognise equivalent fractions and have an
