“Birds of Prey” Ravens Nest No.1 of Harford County, MD, Inc. Volume 17, Issue 3 Signature Event - Scholarship Banquet Time March 9, 2017 President’s Letter Hello Nest No.1, Tonight is election night. Please make sure you get a ballot from the front table at check-in (please keep in mind you must be eligible to vote – simply ask Michelle). Once you have our ballot hand it to the folks coming around or drop it in the box at the front entrance. We want to have a smooth election process and want to have the results communicated to the membership prior to the “New Business” part of the meeting. Good luck to everyone running! Our Signature Event is only 2 weeks away! It is CRUNCH TIME concerning our Scholarship Banquet! We really need more members to attend! So far we only have 55 tickets sold with a total of 87 out (we comp the nominees, the coaches and our guests). WE NEED YOUR HELP! We need to have 160 in attendance to secure both sides of the hall. Believe me this makes a tremendous difference for our Scholarship Program -- it really opens the room and adds immensely to this wonderful event. For only $40 you receive a very nice meal (you can go for seconds), opening music by our own Nest members "This Your Monkey?", Baltimore Ravens Crockett Gillmore, 3 time Pro Bowler & 13-year NFL veteran Kevin Glover, and the always on target emcee Scott Garceau. That is a lot for $40. This is our 15th Annual Scholarship Awards Banquet and we want it to make it a special one. Also, Harford County Executive Barry Glassman is scheduled to attend and he will address the scholarship nominees and assist in handing out the awards. This is a big deal for our Nest! Once again we are giving out over $12,000 in scholarships! After this banquet, that will put Nest No.1 over the $162,000 mark since we started this event 15 years ago. Wow that is a monumental feat! Please be a part of this worthy cause! We have to give a head count to Richlin the Monday following our March 9 meeting so please purchase your tickets tonight from Scholarship Chair Kim Cavanugh. If you haven't attended please try, I guarantee once you are there you will be proud to be a member of Ravens Nest No.1 This upscale event takes place on Thursday, March 23, 2017, at the Richlin Ballroom in Edgewood, MD, 6pm to usually about 9:30pm. Please grab a Scholarship Flier and make a last minute push for ticket sales! Get the word out and thanks! Switching gears, please get your Nest Membership Dues in to Michelle this evening. If you do not have them tonight get with Michelle so you can mail them in. The Chamber Bull/Oyster/Shrimp Feast is next month on April 22 at Columbus Gardens. This is a Saturday afternoon event and includes an open bar. Check out the menu on the back page of this edition of The Ravens Caw. Please see me tonight if you would like tickets. I will also have them at the April meeting. As you can see we are entering the busy part of our Nest calendar. Next month our raffle tickets will be distributed by Nichole Giannaras and Karen Thomas so be on the lookout. It appears our annual Oriole trip may take place in July this year as their schedule conflicts with many of our events. Additionally, the Orioles have increased ticket prices substantially for certain teams, some as high as $30 for a bleacher seat. They haven’t even released pricing for the Cubs series in July. We want to keep this affordable to our membership so look for details at our April meeting. See you at the Banquet! Go Ravens! Your 2017 Ravens Nest No.1 Dues Are Needed Tonight! The new Mr. Thighsman would not win his Heisman, finishing second to Jim Plunkett. *The largest point spread in NFL history came when the Denver Broncos were favored by 26.5 over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2 of 2013. The Jags covered, falling 35-19. *Of the 11 games since 1987 that had point spreads of 20+, the favorite has only covered twice, though no underdogs won straight up. The Philadelphia Eagles, 24.5-point dogs to the eventual 16-0 New England Patriots, came closest, leading 28-24 entering the fourth quarter before a Patriots touchdown gave them a 31-28 victory. *Since no once could agree on the realignment of the NFC after the AFL/NFL merger, the five best plans were put into a vase and Pete Rozelle’s secretary selected one at random. *The Baltimore Colts made an 80-cent long-distance call to sign Johnny Unitas as a free agent. *The Arizona Cardinals had the longest postseason victory drought in NFL history (1947 to 1998). *Walter Payton only won one NFL rushing title in his career. *Ed Sabol was the oldest Hall of Fame inductee.
