Scene Two (at school)
The lights come up. The shiny cloth has been removed and the School sign has been put up stage left. Jumaane's
schoolmates are gathered together while Jumaane enters stage right and walks towards them.
The group of giraffes slowly gathers around
the short-necked giraffe, pointing at him and
laughing. Jumaane lowers his head in shame
and awkwardly tries to move away from the
giraffes' circle. The others continue teasing
him.
Jumaane leaves the others and goes upstage
right to sit alone. He looks depressed and
disappointed. His schoolmates gather in a
group on the other side of the stage and start
speaking together in a low voice while casting
dismissive looks towards the short-necked
giraffe.
Jumaane's schoolmates exit stage left and his
family enters stage right. Jumaane remains
sad as his family moves towards him with a
worried look on their faces. One of his sisters
goes next to him and asks him to play with
her, but he is very unenthusiastic about it.
Jumaane's family exits and the schoolmates
get back on stage, stage left. They are
wearing wreaths of flowers around their
necks and run around happily, chasing each
other, playing and laughing.
Jumaane sits alone and sad in a corner far
away from them. He is sad and lonely as he
delivers his lines. Lights dim.
The mango tree full of mangoes is brought
on stage before the lights come up again. All
the giraffes except Jumaane gather under
the tree, pretending to stretch their necks up
in order to get the fruit. Jumaane remains
seated at the far right corner of the stage,
unhappy and alone. The lights dim and the
giraffes except Jumaane exit.
On his first day at school,
Jumaane is very nervous. The
other giraffes are not very friendly.
They laugh at him and do not
want to play with him. The shortnecked giraffe is very sad .
Haha! Look at him!
His neck is so short! He's not one
of us!
The other giraffes hold their heads
up high when they talk. Jumaane
can't hear them. He goes and sits
alone in the playground . He is
very lonely.
His neck is so short! Not taillike
ours.
Ha ha, yes ... he can't hear us!
Every day after school, Jumaane
goes home very sad . He doesn't
want to sing anymore. He doesn't
want to do anything . His mother
and father are very worried about
him.
Sister Giraffe: Come on, brother, let's play!
No. I don't want to do anything .
Spring comes. There are flowers
everywhere and the mango trees
are full of fruit. All the giraffes
at school are very happy. But
Jumaane is not.
I haven't got any friends!
One tree is very special. It has
bigger and more delicious fruit
than the other trees, but it is very
tall. The young giraffes try and try,
they stretch their necks but cannot
reach it.
The tree is very tall. I can't reach it.
Giraffe 2:
I want to get the fruit, too, but I
can't reach the tree either.

Scene Three (in the forest)
The shiny blue cloth is brought on stage again and spread onstage left, with Jumaane sitting next to it. The tall
tree where Asati's nest is supposed to be is put up on stage right. Asati and her chicks are hidden behind the tree.
Jumaane is looking at himself in the water.
He has a sad look on his face as he speaks.
He is wondering about himself and he feels
disappointed with himself
The lights go off and then on again a couple
of times, so that the arriving storm is implied.
Jumaane stands up and looks at the sky
Then he sits down again indifferent about all
that takes place around him.
Asati suddenly iumps from behind the tree
and pretends to be iumping up and down in
small hops, fluttering her wings and shouting
at the same time, calling for help.
Jumaane looks around trying to find out
where the voice comes from.
He spots Asati and moves closer to her,
looking at her curiously
Jumaane goes near Asati and talks to her.
His attitude shows a shy person with no self
confidence. His voice is weak and full of selfpity. He talks slowly and unenthusiastically
and keeps his head low.
Asati is surprised by what she hears. She tries
to change his mind. She points to Jumaane's
legs and asks him to help once again.
One day after school, Jumaane sits
by the lake. He looks at himself in
the water and feels sad.
Jumaane: I am a short-necked giraffe. I can't
reach the delicious mango in the
mango tree. I'm useless.
As he is sitting there, the sky
becomes very dark. A storm comes.
The wind blows and it begins to rain .
Jumaane just sits there in the rain .
He is very sad and doesn't want to
go home.
Jumaane: I don't care about the wind . I don't
care about the storm . I am useless
and I am all alone.
Suddenly he hears a loud noise and
sees a tall tree falling down. But
Jumaane doesn't leave. He doesn't
want to go home. Then Jumaane
hears a little voice calling for help.
He looks around but can't see
anything . Then, he hears the voice
again.
Help! Please, help me!
Jumaane looks again . Near the
tree, a small bird is jumping up and
down. She is very upset.
My chicks are in danger! The tree fell
on my nest! Please help us!
Jumaane looks down.
Jumaane: I can't help you . I'm a useless shortnecked giraffe. Can't you see?
The bird looks at him and says.
You are not useless. Look at your
strong legs! You can kick this tree
away and save my nest!

Song
The lights fade out. When the lights come up again, all the characters walk on stage. The choir is divided into two
groups, one entering from upstage right, the other from upstage left. When everyone's on stage they start singing
together. Just before they finish, the house lights come on and the audience is invited to clap in time to the song.
A young giraffe was sad one day
