152 Freeman Road, Durack Qld 4077 RAWCS Northern Region DIK Newsletter February 2017 Welcome to the DIK February 2017 edition prepared by your friends at DIK to acknowledge your support for this major local and international ongoing service project of RAWCS. Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) isn’t limited in the geographical area in which Rotarians may choose to work. However because RAWCS Northern Region has within it two Districts incorporating nations other than Australia, many Northern Region projects are designed to help advance these Nations. ABOVE; In May 2015 DIK was offered the redundant equipment from the decommissioned Royal Children’s Hospital at Herston. Our window of opportunity was only a few days and local Rotary Clubs rallied and loaded five x forty foot containers of valuable assorted equipment. Members of Bundaberg West Rotary Club were present at Godden Memorial Hospital, Lolowai, East Ambae, Vanuatu when a shipment of the hospital beds arrived during August. The beds were initially loaded onto the beach by barge, then transferred to an undercover shed until the Lolowai Hospital Children’s ward refurbishment was completed. An example hospital equipment recycled by DIK and sent to Vanuatu. RAWCS Northern Region DIK Newsletter February 2017 Page (2) RAWCS Northern Region covers the geographically expansive Rotary Districts 9550, 9570, 9600, 9630 and 9640. They stretch across Northern New South Wales, Queensland and Northern Territory, Timor Leste, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Nauru. The picture on the left was taken August 2009. Shortly after Donations in Kind moved into the 152 Freeman Road premises and we thought that we were busy when we had two containers in the yard! Fast forward to February 2017. The picture below taken from the same spot. No room to ‘swing the proverbial cat’ and more outside along with about a dozen containers, mostly full and ready to be shipped as soon as funds are available, can your Rotary Club help? Congratulations to the Moreton Region Cluster, of District 9600 who pooled their resources to pay the freight on a container to Kokopo Rotary Club. Col Laurenson gratefully receives the cheque for $5,500 from the cluster members who met at DIK on 2nd February to load two more containers.
