The High School program is built on a small group format called “discipleship.” This term comes from the Latin word for
student or apprentice: discipulus. We seek to be those who follow Christ and His Church so intently that we are literally
“apprentices” in his ways; and we want to invite others into that life. Students are placed into groups (sometimes based on friends,
similar schools, interests, etc.) with other students of the same grade. This group is led by an adult volunteer (called “Core Team”)
who organizes meetings, facilitates discussion, and mentors students through all four years of high school.

T HE OR DE R SYST EM :
Each discipleship group is a part of a larger group called an “order,” which is a collection of discipleship groups based
upon gender. In order to instill a deeper sense of identity in Youth, these orders have their own distinct crest, flag, shirts,
spirituality, etc. Each discipleship group within an order is a chapter within that order (for example: a discipleship group in the
Little Flowers would be Little Flowers, chapter I.) In addition to a strong individual order identity, each order has a brother/sister
order of the other gender. The orders, along with their brother/sister order are shown below.
What is discipleship?
Jesus, the Word and Son of God incarnate, came to earth
and had multitudes follow him. In the culture of the day,
the image used was for students to follow a teacher
(Hebrew: Rabbi) so closely that they would literally “eat
the dust of the Rabbi.”
Just as these followers of Christ followed so intently, we

Called “the greatest saint of modern times” by Pope Pius X, St.
Thérèse is a model of sanctity and devotion.

the dust” of their teacher, their Savior, their God; Jesus
Christ. !
The High School Ministry at Light of the World is built
around “discipleship groups.” These are small groups
that seek to “do life together” through all four years of
high school. This is a group where your struggles and
joys can be shared, you can grow in your faith, ask those
tough questions about Jesus and His Church, and make
some friends!

T H E S ON S OF T H UND ER ( S .T. ) :
S.S.G. are entrusted to the intercession of St. Gianna Beretta
Molla. St. Gianna was an Italian woman who chose to die in
childbirth, rather than endanger the life of her child. Canonized
in 2004, Giana’s husband actually attended the canonization of
his wife.
S.T. are entrusted to the Apostles and brothers James and
John. Members of the 12 closest followers of Christ, Jesus
named these brothers “sons of thunder” in the Gospel of Mark
(3:17).
