POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for ensuring that dogs are licenced/registered and cats are
microchipped with the City of Burlington. This position is also responsible for the care, feeding
and medical needs of the animals housed at the shelter as well as maintaining proper shelter
hygiene and providing administrative and customer service support.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Maintain AMANDA database including dog licence registration, requests for service and
complaints.
2. Process all financial transactions and daily deposit and cash balance sheets. Responsible
for the administration of the dog licensing program including the distribution and
reconciliation of tags sold and annual renewals.
3. Prepares shelter/licensing statistical reports on a monthly basis.
4. Responsible for assisting customers in person and by telephone, fax and computer.
Provides general receptionist duties for the facility. Ensure that customer service policies
and procedures are carried out and issues are identified and resolved. Follow-up where
necessary.
5. Provides care to the animals at the shelter including the cleaning and disinfecting of cages,
feeding, ordering of supplies, laundry and intake of aggressive, difficult or unpredictable
animals. Evaluates animal being surrendered for adoption.
6. Monitor the general health of all animals and reports changes in health, temperament or
behaviour to the Veterinary Technician or Supervisor or Public Health Inspector if required.
7. Assists veterinary technician by providing restraint for animals, sometimes aggressive, for
examination and routine medical treatments.
8. Maintains records for the shelter including pound book records, dispatch records, dog tag
inventory, statistical reports, veterinary medical records, adoption records and claimed
animals.

9. Provides minor medical / health and hygiene treatments to domestic animals, at the shelter,
including but not limited to: vaccinations, parasite treatment, administration of medications,
bathing, ear cleaning, nail clipping, microchipping and euthanizing.
10. Maintains and updates adoption website on a frequent basis.
11. Co-ordinates the transfer of wildlife to rehabilitation centres as required.
12. Provides information, guidance and advice to the public relative to animal care, control and
identification for both domestic animals and wildlife.
13. Dispatches calls for sick, injured, diseased animals and animals in contravention of the
Municipal By-laws and DOLA (Dog Owners Liability Act) to Animal Control Officers via cell
phone and handheld radios.
14. Trains and provides task supervision to the shelter volunteers and co-op students.
15. May be required to assist with Animal Control Officer duties including occasional after
hours “on call” duties. Other job duties as assigned.
POSITION SPECIFICATIONS:
Education: Community College Diploma in Animal Care/Veterinary technology or equivalent
combinations of education and experience.
Experience: 2-3 years in animal care. Office experience would be an asset.
Work Environment: 35 hours per week, non-standard environment. The shelter environment
includes regular contact and/or exposure to animals both domestic and wild and their associated
waste. May be involved in the medical care, feeding, and cleaning, and restraining animals.
Supervision:
Supervision Given: Provides advice, assistance and task supervision to volunteers,
co-op students and other staff.
Staff Years Supervised: None.
Time Pressures: Most deadlines are known in advance, with heavier demands around
annual dog licence renewals in the fall.
Responsibility:
Supervision Received: Works independently on tasks, which are generally routine in
nature.
Effect of Errors: Errors in generating revenues may cause financial shortfalls,
affecting programs and resources. Errors in dealing with the public can result in poor
public relations and embarrassment for the Corporation.
Freedom to Make Decisions: Works within established policies. May be required to
make suggestions or formulate solutions to unusual situations or problems. Consults
supervisor before deviating from policy or procedure.
Interpersonal Contacts:
Purpose:
Deals with pet owners, complainants, veterinarians, suppliers and
employees from other agencies.
Nature: Difficult contacts occur occasionally. Must be able to deal with irate citizens.
Position requires tact in dealing with difficult situations respectfully while representing the
City, regarding animal licensing, by-laws or impounding.
Ingenuity: Must make judgements based on the relevant statues, other legislation, City policy
and accumulated experience. Works independently within the guidelines set out through policy
and procedures.

Physical Demands: Must be able to lift cages and animals when cleaning the animal areas.
Daily involved in lifting, pulling, pushing, etc.
