Acts, 1938. — Chap. 155 186. An Act relative to exemptions from the payment of Chav. ISQ POLL TAXES AND RELATIVE TO THE ANNUAL LISTING OF RESIDENTS OF CITIES AND TOWNS. Be it enacted, etc., as follows: Section four of chapter fifty-one of the Genhereby amended by striking out the first paragraph, as most recently amended by section one of chapter one of the acts of nineteen hundred and thirty-seven, and Except as otherinserting in place thereof the following wise provided by law, the assessors, assistant assessors, or one or more of them shall annually, in January or February, visit every building in their respective cities and towns, Section eral Laws 1. is : — g. l. (Ter etc!, 'amended, Assessors to S'^certaln residents, etc. and, after diligent inquiry, shall make true lists containing, as nearly as they can ascertain, the name, age, occupation, nationality if not a citizen of the United States, and residence on January first in the preceding year and in the current year, of every male person twenty years of age or older, residing in their respective cities and towns, liable to be assessed for a poll tax; and shall also make true lists containing the same facts relative to every woman twenty years of age or older residing in their respective cities and towns. If the assessors are satisfied that such statement is true, they shall assess or list him, as the case may be, and give him a certificate thereof. Section 3. Section 4. Section five of said chapter fifty-nine, as S^^•ip^5 most recently amended by chapter forty-seven of the acts etc!, amended. of nineteen hundred and thirty-eight, is hereby further amended by inserting after clause Seventeenth the following : : new clause : — — — . Seventeenth A, Male inhabitants of the commonwealth are seventy years of age or over, or who, during the preceding calendar year, were recipients of old age assistance or of aid furnished by municipalities from funds appropriated by them for the relief, support, maintenance and employment of the poor, shall be assessed for, but shall be exempt at their request from the payment of, a poll tax. Approved April C hap. 1S7 An Act Be it 7, 1938. relative to the appointment of the clerk of COMMITTEES IN THE CITY OF FALL RIVER. enacted, Section etc., as follows: The clerk of committees in the city of Fall River shall be appointed by the mayor, subject to confirmation by the city council, to hold office for two years and until his successor is qualified, notwithstanding any provision of chapter forty-three of the General Laws to the con1. trary. of Section January 2. This act shall take effect on the first Monday in the year nineteen hundred and thirty-nine. Approved April 7, 1938. Chap. ISS An Act providing for the election or appointment of AN appropriation, ADVISORY OR FINANCE COMMITTEE BY THE TOWN OF HOLLISTON. Be it enacted, etc., as follows: Section 1. The town of Holliston, notwithstanding the provisions of section sixteen of chapter thirty-nine of the General Laws, may provide by by-law for the election of an appropriation, advisory or finance committee, as well as for the appointment of such a committee under said section sixteen. Any by-law of said town authorizing the election of such a committee adopted prior to the effective date of this act, and all acts done by a committee so elected, are hereby confirmed and made valid to the same extent as if this act had been in effect at the tim.e of the adoption of such bylaw. Section 2. This act shall take full effect upon its acceptance by a majority of the registered voters of the town of Holliston voting thereon at the annual town meeting in the year nineteen hundred and thirty-nine or at a special town meeting held prior thereto.
