2001-2002 2002-2003 2003-2004 2004-2005 farewell SHALALA President Donna E. Shalala stepped down A fter 14 years of distinguished service at the University of Miami, President Donna E. Shalala decided to step down at the end of the 2014-2015 university year. Throughout her tenure Shalala advanced the university into the top-tier of American universities, making it one of the nation’s leading research universities. “Collectively we have accomplished what we set out to do—secure the University of Miami’s place as the next great American research university,” Shalala stated in her resignation letter. While in office Shalala managed to do more than just be a leader of the university, she became a friend to everybody on campus, actively talking with students and taking pictures with them. Under her leadership the university transformed from Suntan U to a world-renowned university with one of the most beautiful campuses in the country. The goal for Momentum2 was to raise $1.6 billion by 2016, which was surpassed in March 2015 and the university looked to continue to raise more. “With our dynamic leadership in place and a wellcrafted plan for our future, we are poised to make even more extraordinary contributions in the years to come,” President Donna E. Shalala said. As Momentum2 came to a close along with Shalala’s tenure as president, the University of Miami raised over $3 billion with the two momentum campaigns, a feat no other university has ever done. By Zach Silberberg PASSING OF AN ICON Edna C. Shalala, mother of President Donna E. Shalala passed away December 2, 2014 at the age 103. The passing came two weeks before the inaugural Edna C. Shalala 5K Run/Walk, an event that benefits the Edna C. Shalala Fund for Women’s Athletics. The fund was established on her 100th birthday. HEALTHYU The UHealth at Coral Gables ambulatory center will be named the Lennar Foundation Medical Center, after a lead donation of $50 million from the Lennar Foundation. The 200,000 squarefoot outpatient center will provide urgent care, outpatient surgery, sports medicine and more and will be completed in 2016. Photo by Baron Alloway #ILOVESHALALA The hash tag #ILoveShalala swept campus in an effort to pay tribute to President Donna E. Shalala in her last year in office. The money rose by the campaign and by the Senior Day at the Rat went to the President’s Book Scholarship Fund. FREEZING SHALALA During Orientation for new students in the fall, President Donna E. Shalala took the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge while on stage. The crowd cheered as Sebastian the Ibis poured a bucket of ice water on her. HILLEL'S HOME The University of Miami Hillel officially broke ground on its Braman Miller Center for Jewish Student Life. Plans for the new center included a new lobby, kosher café, dining room, multipurpose space and prayer sanctuary. CGIU: ROUND TWO The University of Miami became the first university to host the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) twice when it came to campus in March. The university first hosted CGI U in 2010. President Bill Clinton and daughter Chelsea Clinton urged more than 1,100 students to stay connected and make a difference. KEYNOTE SHALALA President Donna E. Shalala was the keynote speaker at the University of Miami Women’s Commission 44th Annual Awards Breakfast. The commission has been dedicated to encouraging a general awareness of women's needs and interests since 1971. SHALALA HOLDS THE KEY University of Miami President Donna Shalala was presented a key to the city of Coral Gables in recognition of her service for the community and the University of Miami.
