Celebrating National Nursing Home Week 2015
Presidential Oaks marked National Nursing Home Week, May 10-16,
with a variety of activities for residents that aligned with the 2015
theme, “Bring On the Fiesta!” including baking Mexican-themed treats,
musical entertainment and a fiesta party.
Each day of the week Presidential Oaks Activities Director Jane Teahan and her staff had programs planned for nursing home residents,
starting off with arts and crafts on Monday. Tuesday was Intergenerational Day where children from Presidential Oaks’ Child Care Center
celebrated with residents by playing pin the tail on the donkey and
other fun games. The Concord High School Chamber Choir came by
in the afternoon to sing to residents.
On Wednesday there was a lot of baking going on! Residents not only
made a Mexican flag cake – which featured red and green layers covered with vanilla frosting – but also cinnamon sugar churros, which
were a big hit as a special treat.
Resident Appreciation Day was celebrated on Thursday, which featured a play and an afternoon fiesta.

were clapping during Parker’s hour-long show.
As part of the fiesta, Teahan announced the King and Queen of Nursing Home Week – residents Loretta Rayhill and Ed Russell - and presented them with their crowns.
To wrap the week, students from Concord High School stopped by to
create wind chimes and paper flowers with the residents on Friday
morning. Residents also took part in a gardening activity in the afternoon.
Teahan also received an official proclamation from Gov. Maggie Hassan marking National Nursing Home Week, which Teahan shared with
Presidential Oaks residents as they were baking. The document will
be framed and on display for residents and their families to see.
Greg Gathers and Marguerite Mathews, co-directors of Pontine Theatre, perform “New England Utopia” for residents as part of National
Nursing Home Week.
“It was a great week, a lot of fun,” said Teahan. “Residents really enjoyed the visit from the Concord High School Chamber Choir and the
performance by Pontine Theatre.”

But Messer’s connection to the Odd Fellow’s Home, now known as

“When I was 12 my choir mistress was a Rebekah and every Christmas and Easter we would come here for the cantata,” she said. “I
have a lot of memories here.”
Messer also worked for 17 years at Camp NEOFA, the youth camp
associated with the Northeast Odd Fellows’ Association, in Liberty,
Maine, including serving as Director of the camp.
