March Tips for Language and Literacy Skills Courtesy of the GECDSB Speech and Language Department Oral Language Play the ‘following directions’ game. Give your child 1, 2 and 3 step directions of things to do around the house. See if they can complete all of the steps. Then have them give you 1, 2 and 3 step directions which you complete. The ability to follow directions and give directions are both important oral language skills. Make them silly and have fun! o Example: Find one sock in your room, one fork in the kitchen and one pillow off the couch and bring them all back to me…. GO! Reading “Great readers are made on the lap of a parent”. Make time to read at home for at least 20 minutes every night. The chart below displays the importance of making time to read together each night. Read to your child, have them read to you and read with each other. Writing Have fun writing down answers to silly questions related to the month of March. Sample Questions: o List five things that are green and use each word in a sentence. o Think about a time when you were really lucky. Write about how you were lucky and how it made you feel. o What is your favourite thing about spring? List some things you love to do as the weather gets warmer. o Describe the sights, sounds and smells associated with spring. o Baseball spring training has started. What would you like to train for? Show me how you can march like a soldier! 1, 2, 3, 4…1, 2, 3, 4…1, 2, 3, 4! Lion, Lamb, Leprechaun, Luck. What sound do you hear at the beginning of those words? New word: ‘journey’. What does that mean? Will you be taking a journey somewhere soon? If you found a pot of gold, what would you do with it? Name 5 vegetables that are ‘green’. Let’s stretch out the sounds in ‘winter’ [w-i-n-t-er] Let’s describe a ‘penny’. What do you do with it? What does it look like? What is it made of? Where can you find it? What else do you know? Can you name the colours in a rainbow? Do you know the order they’re in? Draw one together! Read your favourite book and change the ending! Imagine that you are a farmer. What would you do? Name the ‘category’ these words belong to: arms, feet, legs, head, stomach [body parts] Around the house treasure hunt! Find 5 things that start with /w/. Name words that rhyme with ‘break’. You see me in an airport. I wear a uniform. I fly a plane. Who am I? Riddle Time! What are white, fluffy and in the sky? [clouds] Draw something that is ‘green’. Print the name of what you drew under the picture. Say ‘rainbow’. Now say ‘rainbow’ again but don’t say ‘bow’. How are ‘soup’ and ‘cereal’ the same? How are they different? Name 5 things that are ‘faster’ than a turtle. Name 5 things that are ‘lighter’ than a pillow. What doesn’t belong: car, bike, house, train Tell me something that is made of: wood, cloth, plastic, metal, glass. New word: ‘fortunate’. Do you know what that means? Use ‘fortunate’ in a sentence. What animal names sound like these silly words: ziger, biraffe, tippo Storytime! Talk about the characters. How do they feel? How would you feel if you were them? Tell which comes first: dog or puppy; lamb or sheep, putting on mittens or tying your shoes When talking about the month of March, they say: ‘in like a lion and out like a lamb’. What does that mean? Hint: it has something to do with the weather! Spring is around the corner! Can you stretch out the sounds in the word ‘spring’? [s-p-r-i-n-g] Name 3 things that you can do outside when it starts to get warm. Talk about a ‘kite’. What do you do with it? What does it look like? What is it made of? Where can you find it?
