Founded in 1921, McWane, Inc. is a family owned business based
in Birmingham, AL. USA with 14 iron foundries and related business
across the world.
McWane traces its roots to the daring and ingenuity of a family that lived in the Blue
Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Charles Phillip McWane entered the foundry business
in 1871. His sons, Henry and James Ransom (J.R.) managed various parts of the
family business. In 1921, McWane began a new venture, the McWane Cast Iron
Pipe Company.
Today, the 6,000 men and women who make up our team at McWane, Inc. are
proud of the products that we make and the manner in which we make them. As
our founder, J.R. McWane, stated in 1921, “the most satisfactory result is the
promotion of teamwork and the spirit of cooperation.” Putting that philosophy into
practice, together we have built our company into an industry leader in quality,
efficiency, workplace safety, environmental stewardship, and community involvement.
We take great pride in the way we do business here at McWane. For more than 90
years, we’ve helped sustain communities by providing thousands of good manufacturing jobs with outstanding benefits. We have a long history of philanthropy and
involvement in the communities where we live and work.
The idea of sustainability is one that McWane supports on a daily basis. Our products are made from post-consumer materials and are recyclable at the end of their
useful life. In fact, we recycle more than 750,000 tons of scrap iron each year,
which is equal to 800,000 cars. That’s efficiency for today and sustainability for
tomorrow.
McWane’s role as one of the world’s most important suppliers of waterworks products is based on the fulfillment of our responsibilities to our employees, our communities and our customers. We pledge to continue to improve team member safety,
keep our communities clean and produce high-quality products for the cities and
towns that use them.
McWane International was established in 1992 to coordinate the international
sales activities of McWane Inc.'s manufacturing divisions across U.S., Canada,
Australia, and China. Previously these activities were conducted by each individual
unit. However the growth of the company during the last two decades required
more attention focused outside the USA and McWane International was formed for
this purpose.
McWane companies have supplied waterworks products to North America, Central
America, South America, the Caribbean, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia
including China, and the Pacific Islands.

At McWane, we’re continually reviewing and improving our safety standards. Because people are our most important resource, we take safety
seriously. Our aggressive safety initiatives are based on the following:
‡ Education - Hundreds of McWane employees receive extensive health and safety education at our own McWane University. At McWane University, employees learn the latest safety procedures and standards from the experts in the field.
‡ Technology - Our advanced software program tracks and monitors occupational health and safety information. With it, all McWane facilities
track injury and illness treatments, incidents investigations results, corrective actions, employee audiometric testing and safety training; trends are
automatically analyzed and available for study. In addition, McWane’s Health and Safety Web site contains information about all of the
company’s health and safety requirements, many of which are more aggressive than OSHA’s.
Committed to the Environment
Because McWane is committed to environmental excellence, we place recycling at the core of our business. Many of our products are recyclable
and are made from recycled materials. In fact, McWane recycles more than 750,000 tons of scrap steel each year, or the equivalent of 800,000
cars per year.
Since 1997 McWane has invested more than $70.0 million to improve environmental performance, environmental technologies and modern
infrastructure.
EHS Policy& Management System
We are committed to achieving the highest standards for health and safety in each of these facilities through the use of innovative programs that
meet or exceed federal and state regulations. At the cornerstone of McWane’s Environmental, Health and Safety program is a comprehensive
Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Management System based on ISO 14001 (a environmental management standard developed by the
International Organization for Standardization), the proposed ISO 18000 standard, and OSHA’s Safety Management Guidelines. This management system, coupled with the McWane Way philosophy of “Do It Safely, or Not At All” provides the directional emphasis for a culture of safety
excellence at each of our facilities.
McWane’s role as one of the world’s most important suppliers of pipe, valves, and hydrants is based on the fulfillment of our responsibilities to
our employees, our communities, and our customers. We have continued to improve employee worker safety, to keep clean the communities we
work in, and to produce first-rate products for the cities and towns that use them, and will do so in the future.
