HW1-7: (76) RQ 9
RQ 9: Explain how each of Galileo’s telescopic discoveries
contradicted the Ptolemaic Theory.
From the Sidereus Nuncius (The Sidereal Messenger):
1) Mountains and valleys on the Moon — the moon isn’t perfect, it’s
just a place.
2) Milky Way made up of lots of stars (“myriad”) — suggests not all
stars are at the same distance.
3) Moons of Jupiter — 4 objects that are clearly not circling the Earth.
Earth could move w/out losing Moon.
After the SN
4) Inner moons of Jupiter orbit faster than outer moons — kinda like
a mini solar-system
5a) Sun has spots (not perfect) and 5b) those spots move (Sun is
rotating, period about 25 days)
6) Venus has phases.
