This solution explains how to use the automatic document feeder (ADF) and flat
scanner glass to send color and black and white faxes.
- If you are only having problems sending faxes to one particular number, refer to
the solution: I'm having problems sending faxes to one particular number. What can
I do?
- If you are seeing the message "Poor Line Condition" when sending faxes, refer to
the solution: When I send a fax, the message 'Poor Line Condition' or 'NG' appears
on the Transmission Verification Report. What does this mean?
- If you are seeing the message "Comm. Error" or "Communication Error" when
sending faxes, refer to the solution: Why is the message "Comm. Error" displayed on
the Touchscreen when I try to send a fax?
If you are having problems sending faxes, follow these steps:
1. If you are only having problems sending faxes outside your area code, make sure
you have long-distance service on your telephone line.
If you do not have long-distance service, you will not be able to send longdistance faxes.
- If you are having problems sending faxes inside and outside your area code, go
to STEP 2.
2. Is your telephone service bundled with your Internet or cable service, or do you
have to connect your telephone to a modem?

- If yes, refer to the solution: I'm using Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and
am having problems sending faxes. What can I do?
NOTE: VoIP is a type of phone system that uses an Internet connection instead
of a traditional phone line.
- If no, go to STEP 3.
3. Verify information is displayed on the Touchscreen:
- If the Touchscreen displays the Basic Functions (date and time) screen, go to
STEP 4.
- If the Touchscreen displays a menu screen, follow these steps:
a. Press

b. Go to STEP 4.
- If the Touchscreen displays an error message (for example, "Paper Jam") or
status message (for example, "Replace Ink"), refer to the solution that addresses
the message.
- If the Touchscreen is blank.
4. Check for a dial tone.
- If there is a dial tone, go to STEP 5.
- If there is no dial tone, refer to the solution: My Brother machine has no dial
tone. What can I do?
5. Load a document into the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF).

7. Do one of the following:
- If
appears on the Touchscreen, press it.
- If
does not appear on the Touchscreen, go to STEP 8.

8. Dial a known-working fax number.
9. Press FAX START.
- The machine will send the fax.
10. Do one of the following:
- If the fax is successful, the issue is resolved.
- If the fax is not successful, go to STEP 11.
11. Change the Brother machine's Compatibility to Basic (for VoIP).
12. Do one of the following:
- If you are using an analog (standard telephone) line, verify the Brother
machine is directly connected to the wall telephone jack.
- If you are using a DSL (cable telephone) line, disconnect the Brother
machine from the DSL filter.
13. Send another test fax.
14. Do one of the following:
- If the fax is successful, the issue is resolved.
- If you are using DSL and the fax is successful, contact your DSL provider
for assistance in resolving the interference from the DSL system.
- If the fax is not successful, go to STEP 15.
15. Use a known-working telephone cord to directly connect your Brother machine to
an entirely different, known-working telephone line for testing purposes.
- If you only have one telephone line at your current location, you must take your
Brother machine to a different location to complete this test.
16. Send another test fax.
17. Do one of the following:
- If the fax is successful, the issue is resolved.
- If you are using DSL and the fax is successful, contact your DSL provider
for assistance in resolving the interference from the DSL system.
- If the fax is not successful, the problem is likely related to the telephone line
or to something in your setup, such as other interfering devices, incorrect
