• Triangle Trade- New England would ship
goods from Americas to Europe and Africa and
back.
England to West Indies = China, Books, Cloth
West Indies to America = Sugar
America to Africa = Rum
Africa to West Indies = Slaves and firearms
Middle Colonies

Commerce- the buying and selling of goods
Grew crops such as Wheat, Barley, and Rye
New York and Philadelphia became two of the
largest cities in the new colonies, they were
major ports for trade
• Artisans and Merchants from all over the
world set up shop in New York and
Philadelphia
Southern Colonies
• Economy based on staple crops like tobacco and rice
• Staple Crop- a crop that is in constant demand,
usually brings in a lot of profit
• Relied on slaves as a work force to farm the large
plantations
• Plantation – Large estate or farm typically in a warm
climate that is usually worked by resident laborers
• Few cities (Charleston, SC and Williamsburg, VA)
• Few merchants, self reliant
