May Procession
The May Procession at Saint Andrew Church is on May 14th. Each
year the students process into
the church to honor Mary.
Grades 1 thru 8 are in attendance and celebrate this day
with readings and songs that
honor the Blessed Mother. During this celebration, a beautiful
crown of flowers is placed on
Mary. The sixth grade Confirmation students wear their robes.
The second grade students who
have received Communion wear
their dresses and suits. The
eighth grade students will be in
their graduation robes.
The May Procession is a family
celebration, and a beautiful tribute to the Blessed Mother.

Reading Olympics
Reading Olympics is a great club if you love to read. Mrs.
Hoffman and Mrs. Moffet work with the fifth and sixth
grades. Mrs. Lukens works with the seventh grade. Mrs.
Parker works with the eighth grade.
This club begins in September. Participants receive a list
of books to read. The participants are put into teams of
twelve. Each member writes summary cards on the forty
five different books.
The Reading Olympics are held in the spring. The contestants are from all different schools in the area. They compete
for ribbons by answering questions about the books.
Saint Andrew’s 7th and 8th grade team won a blue ribbon at
this year’s competition. Congratulations! Way to Go!

Neumann Scholarship
Congratulations to Aidan Mangan for receiving the Neumann
Scholarship this year. When Aidan’s name was announced, he was
truly surprised and so grateful. It was awesome to see his reaction as
well as his mother’s! Almost 900 eligible eighth graders competed for
this award, but only 35 students won the scholarship. All the winners
will be able to go to whatever Archdiocesan High School they want to
go to. This scholarship was initiated in 1995.

CYO Girls Basketball
Here at St. Andrew’s parish every child has the opportunity to play basketball if they want to play. The St. Andrew CYO has a wonderful basketball team for girls. The
student as well as the parent must make a commitment
with the team and see it through to the end. Your child
will be taught the fundamentals of the game in a fun,
safe way.
There are four parish teams: the White Team, the Blue
Team, the Gold Team, and the Red Team. Every year the
teams have a parish tournament starting with a game to
determine who will play. Then, there is a loser’s bracket
with one additional game. If your team loses that game,
you are out for good. Last year during the championship
game the Blue Team beat the White Team. Even though
some were on losing teams, a good time was had by all.

There are many things to do in spring; baseball is one of
them. Baseball at Saint Andrew is a great way to make
friends and have fun. It is open to grades 7 and 8. The CYO
has great baseball. You will practice and play. It is an exciting game!
If you join the team you probably already know someone who
is playing on a team. Baseball is also our country’s favorite
game. Come play Saint Andrew baseball.

Spirit Day
At Saint Andrew School, we celebrate
Spirit Day. This year it will take place on
June 7th. The students start the day off
with a prayer and then dye Mr. Rosenblatt’s hair blue. The class that raises the
most money in the Great Crusader Quest
gets to dye his hair.
Spirit Day is a day of fun. Throughout the
daytime, our school gym teacher, Mrs. Herzog, plans every activity
for us to take part in. Mrs. Herzog and parents set up the activities.
Some activities are the 50 yard dash, the scooter relay, Steal the Bacon and much more. Mrs. Kanefsky does the face painting with the 8th
graders. They also participate in the DUNK TANK! One 8th grader
waits until he or she has been dunked. After a while, they switch and
another one takes a turn. To end our day, the teachers participate in
the water balloon toss. Everyone wishes everyday was Spirit Day at
St. Andrew School!

ANSWERS:
Pilgrims! The Mayflower was the ship that brought the first pilgrim settlers to Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts. After a journey of over two
months, the settlers finally made it to their destination in the New
World in November (not in the springtime).
April Fool’s Day, of course.
No — but April May! This silly joke is simply a bit of wordplay using the
names of the spring months.
Two lips (tulips). When you tell this springtime riddle, make sure that
you say the punch line clearly enough so that the meaning is understood.
Because it’s the season when you can really “rake” in the cash! To
rake in money simply means to make a lot of it all at one time.
If a friend says “what?” or that they don’t know, you should respond,
“I’m surprised you’re not fool-ly aware of it!” If a friend says, “April
Fool’s Day,” respond by saying “I’m glad to know you’re fool-ly
aware of it!” This is a great joke for April Fool’s Day.
“You’re really growing, bud!” A bud is a shoot that eventually blooms
into a full-grown flower.
Both of them are followed by bees (B’s)!
Six months old. (What did you think the answer was?)

St. Patrick’s Day
Did you ever know that people all over the world celebrate St. Patrick’s
Day? Even Beijing, China had their first St. Patrick’s Day with the courtesy of
Ireland. One of the biggest parades is in Cork, Ireland; in this town there is
even a street called St. Patrick’s Parade Road. St. Patrick is the Saint of Ireland. St. Patrick was an English Christian, and he was playing on the rocks in
England when he was a kid and the Irish came and kidnapped him in about the
4th century. They took him on a boat to Ireland, and he became a slave. Many
years later he was set free after being a shepherd. He went back to England for
a couple years and thought all the people in Ireland believed in idols. So Patrick went back to Ireland to teach the Christian religion. Now in the 21st century, almost all of Ireland and Europe is Christian.

Track and Field
Track and field is made up of many events; from the 100 meter dash
to the 1,600 meter. It also contains field events where the participants
will do shot put, long jump, triple jump and high jump. With almost 150
participants, our CYO team is the biggest in the parish. There are practices on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. If you are in
grades one to eight and are a member of the parish, you can join the
team. You can attend Catholic, private or public school.
At the end of the regular season the participants have a chance to
advance to Region 19 and then could advance to Area C, and they can
advance to the Archdiocesan Championship and finally advance to the
University of Pennsylvania`s Franklin Field. The track also participates
in Hike for Hunger and other community service projects. There are at
least four regular meets in which every child competes in multiple
events against the same age and gender.

Weather Balloon Project
The fifth grade will be doing a project in April. They are going to
launch a weather balloon into space. In charge of this whole project is 5B’s
student teacher, Mr. Johnson. This project will be done by 5A, 5B and 5C.
Before this can happen, they need to raise money for this project which is
about $1500.00. The fifth grade will need to learn persuasive writing. The
fifth grade watched a couple of videos for inspiration and worked on worksheets for how to do persuasive writing. The kids are going to post an advertisement on a website. The website is where the fifth grade can get money
for the project. They will need to post a video on why people should fundraise for this project. The people will put down a goal of how much money
the project needs. They get a prize for how much money is donated. For instance, if a person donates $5.00 to the project, they get an award. In total
we will need about $1000.00 to make this project happen. You can donate,
but it will last only 30 days. If we launch this weather balloon at St. Andrew,
it will have a very high chance of landing in the Atlantic Ocean so we will
have to launch it somewhere near Harrisburg. Students will be invited to
the launch. This weather balloon will fly high and move very fast, and it is
not a sure bet it will return. It will be launched around April 20, and it is
said to be a lot of fun. I cannot wait to see the video of the balloon traveling
to near space!
