My name is Duyen Le (standing back left). I'm from Vietnam.
I studied GED for a year after I moved to Florida. I was a junior
student when I lived in Austin, MN. However, when I came to
Florida and applied to high school, they did not accept me
because my age was too old to study in high school. At that time,
I was 19. Therefore, I decided to study GED for a while. I went to
Dixie Hollins Adult Education Center to help me get a GED.
I began studying on August 24th. Teacher Inguna (sitting bottom
left) taught English and instructed me very enthusiastically.
Then I moved on to teacher Toni’s class. I found some interesting
things there such as studying science, etc. I passed the
mathematics test first, then Science, then Social Studies, then the
last test, RLA (Reasoning through Language Arts). I was so excited
when I passed the last test. I feel very thankful to have these
teachers in my life. They are the best teachers I have ever seen.”
“My name is Hernan Diaz (standing back right). I would like to share with the rest of the students how happy I am
because I have reached one of my goals in life, and that was to finish high school (GED). It was a big challenge for me.
I thought it was something impossible to reach, but I did it. One of the many reasons that made it possible was the
support of other students to me and to each other. That kind of atmosphere was what helped me keep going, even
though I felt like quitting and giving up. When I saw the other students’ positive attitude, it inspired me the most.
Also, the teachers are our inspiration because they care about us about our success, about our future. They pushed
us to keep going when we wanted to give up. I am so thankful to have found this group of teachers and students.
This was my last shot to better myself. I had tried to do this before and I was not able to accomplish it. Those other
teachers did not care about their students. I strongly believe that Dixie Teachers help anyone reach their goals. It is
not easy because all students come from different countries and English is not our first language. However, if you
work hard, you will see success. All the tools and resources are here at Dixie Hollins Adult Education Center and the
most important tools are the teachers who care!”
The high school credit recovery program was
very busy this summer and we hope to continue
that momentum in the fall. Dixie High will no
longer offer Gradpoint classes during the day.
If students fail a class, they will need to take the
class after school through Dixie Adult, Monday
through Thursday from 2:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
The pre and post Gradpoint tests must be taken
in the lab. Regular class work can be done at
home, however we encourage students to attend
the lab. We have excellent teachers there
prepared to help them with the understanding
of the curriculum. Over the summer, the lab was
redone with all new computers. The high school
principal, assistant principals and guidance
counselors were given a weekly progress report
on each student. Our communication with the
high school is ongoing and appreciated.
The summer data shows 178 co-enrolled
students and 38 adult
students with 82 classes
completed. It was a short but
productive summer.
We are going to acknowledge
our staff members more this
year and have chosen a theme to
let staff members know we see
what they are doing well.
You may or may not golf but we
are going to use a golf theme.
At each faculty meeting, we will acknowledge
“the good stuff you are doing”, by giving
various staff members golf balls with their
achievement written on it. The golf balls will
be put into a container and the staff member
with the most golf balls at the end of a term
will win a prize. Our district/school vision is
100% student success. The school mission of
Dixie Hollins Adult Education Center is to
provide a learning environment for our diverse
population which will empower them to reach
personal, career and economic goals and
become productive members of society.
There may be sand traps, water hazards, etc.,
but we can “hit the drive” to meet our
students’ goals.
