World War II Veterans:
SKRECC
Wants You

A
ll of us will forever be
indebted to all our veterans. Of our World War
II veterans, however,
according to the U. S.
Department of Veterans Affairs, only
620,000 of the 16 million Americans
who served in WWII were alive in
2016.
Each year since 2011, South
Kentucky RECC has joined with the
other Kentucky Touchstone Energy
Cooperatives that make up the East
Kentucky Power system to help sponsor an Honor Flight to Washington, D.
C. to honor veterans, giving first prior-
ity to those who served in WWII; then
to those in the Korean War; then the
Vietnam War. These veterans risked
their lives and endured great suffering
to guarantee our freedoms. Sponsoring
an Honor Flight is our way of saying
“thank you.”
The mission of Honor Flight is to
fly WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam
War veterans to Washington, D. C., to
visit their memorials. The one-day trip
is offered free of charge to these veterans—some of whom might never get to
the memorials erected in their honor.
The top priority is to get as many
WWII veterans involved in Honor
Flight, then in the future, Honor
Flight Network will also pay tribute
to America’s other heroes who served
during the Korean and Vietnam wars,
followed by veterans of more current
wars. They, too, have given so much
and their efforts are not forgotten.
South Kentucky RECC is searching for any World War II veterans in
our service territory that have not been
on a previous Honor Flight and would
like to take the trip. The Kentucky
Touchstone Energy Cooperative-sponsored trip is tentatively scheduled for
September 16.
If you have a WWII veteran in
“Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can
never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude. America will never
forget their sacrifices.”—Harry S. Truman, as posted at the WWII Memorial in
Washington, D. C.
your family, or know of one, you can
register them on the Honor Flight website at www.honorflightky.org, or have
them contact Joy Bullock at (606) 6784121 for assistance. South Kentucky
RECC would love to help these remarkable men and women get registered for
a trip of a lifetime.
As Will Rogers said, “We can’t all
be heroes. Some of us have to stand on
the curb and clap as they go by.” That’s
what we’re doing when we pay tribute
to these veterans.

Flight, visit www.honorflightky.org.

The Simplest Way to Report an Outage: Text It In
S
outh Kentucky RECC strives
to provide professional and
prompt service, particularly
when the weather wreaks
havoc and the power goes
out. SKRECC knows that members
also like to be able to conduct business
at their convenience and at their fingertips.
Members can now text their outages to the co-op to avoid busy signals
and save time. In order to use this service, South Kentucky RECC members
need to:
• Make sure their service on file with
the co-op includes an up-to-date mobile phone number. You can call your
local office and update the file, or you
can visit the SKRECC member portal and add or correct your mobile
number. Access to the online member portal
is gained through the South Kentucky
RECC website: www.skrecc.com. Click
on the My Account tab, and edit your
account profile.
If you currently pay your SKRECC
bill online, you will use the same log-in
information. If you are new to the site,
you will have to establish an account. You log-in using your SKRECC
member number. If your SKRECC account number is 12345-001, then your
A
member number is 12345. SKRECC will then email a password to you so you can complete the
log-in. After you log in the first time,
After you have a cell phone number on file with the co-op, text
SKOUTAGE to 85700 to register
for outage texting.
you can change your password and create a user ID for future use that will be
easier for you to remember.
• Once your mobile phone number is
added or updated, there are two ways
to sign up for outage texting. You can
text skoutage to 85700, or register for
outage texting service at the SKRECC
website. You will find the link on the
right side of the page. Just click it and
follow instructions to enter your mobile
phone number.
• Once you have registered, you will
receive a text message confirming that
you are now active, and you will be able
to begin using the service (see photo).
When you experience an outage,
simply text the word “OUT” to 85700.
It will be entered directly into our outage management system.
In addition, you will receive a text
letting you know that the power has
been restored.
Do not rely on posting your outage on social media or messaging it
via social media. It is not monitored
24-hours-per-day.
Finally, to track your outage, you
can visit our outage center on the
SKRECC website. You will find outages
listed by county and size, and it shows if
a crew has been assigned to your outage.
South Kentucky RECC is always
looking for ways to provide the best
possible service for our members. Texting an outage provides another way to
make service and assistance accessible,
on demand, 24 hours a day, seven days
a week.
Downed Line Safety
t South Kentucky Rural
Electric Cooperative, we have
three words for anyone who sees
a downed power line, “Don’t Touch It!”
You need to consider every wire
on the ground as energized and dangerous—especially in the winter when
snow and ice can act as an insulator
keeping downed lines energized.
South Kentucky RECC Safety and
Loss Control Coordinator Eric
Chumbley says members who see
a stray power line need to follow
proper precautions.
“The first thing they need to
do in the event of a downed power line is to call the co-op or 911
for help. Members, from a safe
distance, should also keep others away from the wire until help
arrives.
“If the downed wire is the re-
sult of an automobile accident, and the
victim is not in imminent danger, call
911, stay back, but keep the person in
the automobile until help arrives, and
keep others away from the auto. In
many instances, the person trying to
assist will be the one that ends up seriously injured or worse.”
