www.skrecc.com January 2017 World War II Veterans: SKRECC Wants You Story by Joy Bullock Photos by Tim Webb A ll of us will forever be indebted to all our veterans. Of our World War II veterans, however, according to the U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs, only 620,000 of the 16 million Americans who served in WWII were alive in 2016. Each year since 2011, South Kentucky RECC has joined with the other Kentucky Touchstone Energy Cooperatives that make up the East Kentucky Power system to help sponsor an Honor Flight to Washington, D. C. to honor veterans, giving first prior- ity to those who served in WWII; then to those in the Korean War; then the Vietnam War. These veterans risked their lives and endured great suffering to guarantee our freedoms. Sponsoring an Honor Flight is our way of saying “thank you.” The mission of Honor Flight is to fly WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam War veterans to Washington, D. C., to visit their memorials. The one-day trip is offered free of charge to these veterans—some of whom might never get to the memorials erected in their honor. The top priority is to get as many WWII veterans involved in Honor Flight, then in the future, Honor Flight Network will also pay tribute to America’s other heroes who served during the Korean and Vietnam wars, followed by veterans of more current wars. They, too, have given so much and their efforts are not forgotten. South Kentucky RECC is searching for any World War II veterans in our service territory that have not been on a previous Honor Flight and would like to take the trip. The Kentucky Touchstone Energy Cooperative-sponsored trip is tentatively scheduled for September 16. If you have a WWII veteran in “Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude. America will never forget their sacrifices.”—Harry S. Truman, as posted at the WWII Memorial in Washington, D. C. your family, or know of one, you can register them on the Honor Flight website at www.honorflightky.org, or have them contact Joy Bullock at (606) 6784121 for assistance. South Kentucky RECC would love to help these remarkable men and women get registered for a trip of a lifetime. As Will Rogers said, “We can’t all be heroes. Some of us have to stand on the curb and clap as they go by.” That’s what we’re doing when we pay tribute to these veterans. For more information on Honor Flight, visit www.honorflightky.org. Downed Line Safety t South Kentucky Rural Electric Cooperative, we have three words for anyone who sees a downed power line, “Don’t Touch It!” You need to consider every wire on the ground as energized and dangerous—especially in the winter when snow and ice can act as an insulator keeping downed lines energized. South Kentucky RECC Safety and Loss Control Coordinator Eric Chumbley says members who see a stray power line need to follow proper precautions. “The first thing they need to do in the event of a downed power line is to call the co-op or 911 for help. Members, from a safe distance, should also keep others away from the wire until help arrives. “If the downed wire is the re- sult of an automobile accident, and the victim is not in imminent danger, call 911, stay back, but keep the person in the automobile until help arrives, and keep others away from the auto. In many instances, the person trying to assist will be the one that ends up seriously injured or worse.” For other safety tips, visit our website at www.skrecc.com.
