Romans 1:8-17 The Gospel of Power

Encouragement is a key activity of followers of Jesus (verse 12). Use these verses to define some key elements of
encouragement:
•
1 Thessalonians 5:8-11
•
Colossians 3:15-16
•
Hebrews 10:23-25
Using the following verses, establish a working definition of Salvation (verse 16) that is both present and future orientated:
•
1 Corinthians 1:18
•
2 Corinthians 5:17
•
Romans 6:1-2
•
Galatians 5:24-25
•
Hebrews 9:28
•
1 Peter 1:3-9
3.
Paul proclaimed the gospel and was not ashamed (verse 16). Look at Psalm 40:6-10. What characterizes a person who is not
ashamed of the gospel?
4.
The righteous live by faith (verse 17)! Hebrews 11 is often referred to as the Bible’s “Hall of Faith.” Choose one of the people
referred to in Hebrews 11, for example Abraham and make observations as to how he lived a life of faith.
Try to use Scripture as much as possible to back up responses.
Turn to those verses and discuss the context as a group.

Application
1. Paul felt a deep obligation to share the gospel (verse 14). Has discussing the gospel and that obligation deepened your
commitment to share the gospel? Why or why not?
2. Righteousness in Christ is not simply a wiping away of our sin; it is a position of being right with God always (verse 17). How does
this understanding of your position in Jesus Christ impact the way you view your day to day relationship with him? If God always
sees you as righteous, what confidence does that engender? What irresponsibility could it lead to? Use Philippians 3:12-21 and
Romans 6:1-2 as a guide for some of this discussion.
3. According to Romans 10:17, faith comes through hearing the word of God. What do you find builds your faith? How? What part
does the word of God have in the strengthening of your faith?
Going Beyond
“The gospel is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes” (verse 16). Make this year the year of even greater
intentionality for sharing the gospel. As a life group, pray for people you want to share the gospel with and commit to encourage
each other towards that goal. Start in your Life Group this week by sharing who they are.
