AMIS Asian Middle School Honor Girls’ Choir Festival Yangon, Myanmar February 17 – 21, 2016 I’m delighted to invite all female members of Breaking Ground, 7th Ave and Voices to audition for the 2015 – 2016 Asian Middle School Honor Girls’ Choir Festival in Yangon, Myanmar! The festival is hosted by the Association of Music in International Schools (AMIS – pronounced like the French word for ‘friends’ – “ah-‐mee”). It is a once-‐in-‐a-‐lifetime opportunity to participate with some of the best young voices throughout Asia. What is an Honor Choir Festival? An Honor Choir Festival is a chance for like-‐minded students to come together for three days of rigorous and fulfilling music-‐making. Students will attend from throughout Asia, and will rehearse, learn, and play with top-‐tier talent and leadership. The culminating performance will take place on Saturday, February 20th at the Yangon National Theater. Who will attend? Six members from Breaking Ground, 7th Ave and Voices will be chosen to attend the festival, based on recorded auditions. Audition information is available in class and on our choir blog under the “AMIS” tab. Auditions will be due to Mrs. Banino by Monday, October 12th, and will be listened to by a panel of performing arts teachers. Scores will be calculated in a “blind audition” setting to ensure total fairness. Students will be given scores based on pitch accuracy, vocal maturity, breath control and overall musicianship. Where will it be held? The festival itself will be held at Yangon International School in Yangon, Myanmar. The choir will be under the direction of Darlene Elkins. The students and Mrs. Banino will leave Wednesday, February 17th and return on Sunday, February 21st. The AMIS Asian Middle School Honor Band Festival will be held concurrently at the International School of Yangon, so we will travel to Yangon with SAS-‐Pudong band members and Ms. Taylor. Where will we stay? The girls will be housed with host families from Yangon International School. They will likely (though not definitely) be paired or grouped with other girls from our school, and will no doubt have a wonderful time with their host family! (over) What is the cost? Parents are responsible for covering cost of the student’s festival fee (approximately 1550 rmb), Myanmar visa, and also the cost of the flight. The school will pay for 25% of the final flight cost. Some additional important details: • AMIS is a prestigious event. Once your daughter is selected to attend and signs the commitment form, she is committed to attend all rehearsals prior to the event. (I will try to work around CISSA and ASA schedules for rehearsals.) • Accepted students will be required to attend 6-‐8 rehearsals outside of class with me, and are asked to spend time on their own learning and perfecting their music. Practice tracks will be made available. • An experience such as an honor choir festival can be life-‐changing, and I highly recommend that all members of choir try out for this opportunity! Although only six girls will be chosen, the act of auditioning alone builds confidence, experience, and is an important part of growth as a performer. Please feel free to email me with any questions, comments or concerns you might have. I look forward to hearing many fantastic auditions, and appreciate your support of your daughter and the arts at SAS-‐Pudong!
