Message from the Founder & Chairman
When I founded The Marsha Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer Research just sixteen years ago, we focused our mission
on saving lives and reducing suffering through improved treatment, early detection and prevention of ovarian cancer.
These are lofty goals, but ones we took on knowing we would not be forging our path alone. Since that time, we have
reached across institutional boundaries to create many dynamic research affiliations. Working collaboratively with
scientists and physicians around the world who are at the forefront of ovarian cancer research, we foster research
that improves outcomes for ovarian cancer, influences national research directions, and disseminates research findings
internationally. Our overarching goal has been to increase the number of investigators focused on ovarian cancer in
order to promote new and better treatments for and early detection and prevention of ovarian cancer.
We could not have inspired scientists and nurtured their ideas without the many generous individuals, families,
corporations, and foundations who have stepped forward to support our vision. Thank you. Because of your gifts,
we have been able to increase our investments in research that we hope will lead to improved treatment and to
greater diagnostic accuracy in the early detection of the disease.
Your support has allowed us to improve methods to detect ovarian cancer at its earliest, most treatable state by
funding initial work by Dr. Patricia Kruk. She now has a patent pending on her method to detect ovarian cancer by
measuring the marker Bcl-2 in urine. Before we funded Drs. Robyn Andersen and Barbara Goff, ovarian cancer was
thought to be a silent killer. Because of their groundbreaking work, we now know the specific symptoms that are
useful in detecting ovarian cancer. In addition to these early detection tools, research has also improved how
different therapies are used to combat this devastating disease. It is through philanthropic support that we are able
to bring novel screening strategies to women who are at high risk for the disease, and to educate all women about
the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer.
No one institution is capable of discovering a cure for ovarian cancer on its own, which is why I am inspired by
and grateful for our partners at Swedish Medical Center and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and
our wonderful Medical Director, Mary L. (Nora) Disis, M.D. from the University of Washington. Thank you, again,
for making 2011 such an extraordinary year.

The Marsha Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer Research
thanks you. In 2011, you made a significant difference
in our ability to invest in research to advance the
understanding of ovarian cancer. You also invested in
our screening program for women who are at high risk
for contracting ovarian cancer, and you enabled us to
spread the word about the important signs and
symptoms of ovarian cancer. Your financial
participation is critical in fighting this terrible disease.
In 2011 we once again experienced an unprecedented
level of philanthropic support at every level. The
generosity and engagement of our donors, volunteers,
our
board members, and many partners resulted in
raising a record breaking $2.2 million, enabling us to
invest in more promising research projects than ever
before. In 2011 we awarded 13 Pilot Study Awards,
three Scientific Scholar Awards, and launched a
new 2-year Scientific Challenge Award to leading
investigators in the field. We also had more women
than ever participating in our early detection
screening program. It is a truly exciting time for all
of us at the Rivkin Center and we are profoundly
grateful for your commitment to our mission.
The Year in Review:
Susun Hosford – a 10-year survivor of ovarian
cancer- received our Courage for Life Award. Her
acceptance speech inspired everyone in attendance.
The collective support of the community, with
generous and thoughtful gifts ranging from $5 to
$500,000, makes an extraordinary impact as a
whole. Your passion for the Rivkin Center translates
directly into vitally needed research and expansion
of free Ovarian Cancer Early Detection Screening
Program services.

A high-point of every year, we welcomed a record
number of teams for the 2011 Swedish SummeRun in
July. Seventeen years ago this event started it all for
the Rivkin Center, and it continues to be a cherished
community celebration. A very special “thank you” to
our 2011 SummeRun Survivor Honoree, Susanne Seidel,
and to her team Marty and Susanne’s Olympians for
all of their work promoting this event.
This year we celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the
Fisher Family & Friends Auction in November. We set
a new record in 2011 by raising an incredible $1.12
million from more than 500 attendees. Thank you
to the family of Lisa Ryan Thompson, our Honorary
Chairs, and our event committee headed by Gloria
Bensussen, Kim Fisher, Scott Swerland and Joe White.

One of the primary functions of the Rivkin Center is to fund innovative pilot studies and scientists showing great
potential for ovarian cancer research. The Rivkin Center is pleased to announce that over $1.2 million in research

Early Detection Screening Program in 2011
Many donors to the Rivkin Center are motivated by
a strong desire to support women who have a family
history of ovarian cancer or other indicators that suggest
they might be at greater risk of developing the disease.
Thanks to their generosity, the Rivkin Center currently
has more than 320 women enrolled in our research-based
Ovarian Cancer Early Detection Screening Program.
