I take this opportunity to thank the staff for their professional dedication to maintaining the work ethic and high expectation for excellence at GOPS and for the output of quality programs and events in 2014. I would also like to extend thanks to the parent volunteers who participated in the curriculum this year and worked towards better outcomes for all learners at GOPS: Classroom support, excursions, swimming, out of hours sports coaching and coordinating, working bees, fundraising, committee work and school community representation. I highly valued the opportunity of drawing on the broad range of skills and expertise in the school’s Governing Council. I thank members for their guidance in setting and monitoring school’s general directions. Heartfelt thanks to Leigh Prior and Lynne Doherty who will retire from GC this year. Last night at Governing Council meeting I outlined the class configuration for 2015 and the processes used by the teachers and the leadership team to place groups of students in classes. I believe from the discussion that Governing Council is confident in the justification for the structure of classes next year and is fully supportive. Students will have an opportunity to visit their new classes and meet their new teachers next week. I will email a brief newsletter next week outlining the class structure along with its advantages over other possible configurations. Next Wednesday we celebrate the achievements of our Year 7s at the Graduation Ceremony and farewell them at Friday’s assembly. I feel immensely proud of each and every one. The growth of their general capabilities and the leadership and role modelling they have shown is remarkable. My best wishes to the Year 7s and to all students and families who are moving on to other schools and settings. Newsletter Highlights I wish all students and members of the school - community a safe and happy holiday break. SOFTBALL Congratulations to our year 6/7 Softball team who had made it through to the GRAND FINAL, which will be played at the end of Week 8, we wish you good luck in going out there and representing GOPS in Softball. YR 2 KANGA CRICKET The GOPS Yr 2 Kanga Cricket team had a terrific year in 2014. All the boys improved immensely. There were fantastic attendances and performance at training every Wednesday morning and they all showed great passion for the game. Thomas E. and Tom T. opened the batting innings most weeks and got the team off to great starts enabling Harry and Jessie to then come in and belt the opposition bowlers to all parts! In the field, Ethan and Jack showed amazing speed with Angus and Hamish proving to be bowlers of the future! In both term 1 and 4 they were very hard to beat and they can be very proud of their development as well as their impressive win/loss ratio!” James O (Coach) YR 5 CRICKET The year 5 cricket team has had a great year. Four new players joined our team at the start of the year and everyone has made heaps of progress and had lots of fun along the way. Last Saturday we had a lightning carnival and finished 8th out of 22 teams from our zone – a great result for a school of our size. As we say, we are only three steps away from being in the Australian team – and as you can see from our photo, we are ready to go!!! Steve W (Coach) YR 3-4 SOFTBALL 2014 has been a great year for all soft-ballers. Thank you to my mum, Louise and Hayley’s mum, Sally for coaching us. We have learnt things like; which base to throw the ball to, how to hit the ball well, and how to catch the ball by letting it go in your glove then closing your other hand over it so it won’t fall out. We all were very happy and had a lot of fun at training and playing each Saturday, its now my favourite sport. You should try it too! (Rosie Rm 7) 4|Page SENIOR SOFTBALL This season has been wonderful. We have had a fun time playing as we have won and lost games which makes us more confident and enthusiastic. Thanks to our coach, my Dad Morgan, we have learnt lots including better ways to bat, field and pitch. He has also shown us that sport isn’t just about winning or losing, it is also about working together as a team and having fun. Above all else these girls are such a great bunch to play with, they never give up and they love softball. By Zoe (Rm 2) SAPSASA KNOCKOUT SOFTBALL Congratulations to our SAPSASA Knockout softball team who were runners up to Mitcham Primary School in the 2014 Large Schools Knockout Competition. We played a formidable opponent, but all the girls can hold their heads high. They displayed determination and persistence throughout the game. I would like to thank all the parents for their help and support, cheering us on in the four games prior to the final and encouraging the team on Thursday. It was great to experience playing on the diamond at West beach and to play against tough competition. The girl’s skills and game play have really improved. A huge thank-you must go to Morgan Young, for all his efforts coaching the girls. His encouragement and knowledge of the game has ensured the success of the team. We also thank Sally Bullock for umpiring the majority of the games and Ellen Tosolini for umpiring the first match. On behalf of the school community we thank you for giving of your time. The girls would not have had this wonderful experience without you. Once again CONGRATULATIONS girls. Liz Osborn GOPS STUDENT COMMUNITY INVOVLEMENT Jack, a Year 6 student at GOPS, had the pleasure of presenting a speech and power-point on Friday 21st November at the Dyslexia Evening, which was held at the National Wine Centre. Due to his successful presentation he will now be meeting the Education Minister and Correctional Services Minister in the near future. Congratulation Jack on an excellent presentation and showing others that persistence and confidence pays off in situations outside of the school fence. STEPHANIE ALEXANDER KITCHEN GARDEN UPDATE Thanks to those families who attended the rather warm, Working Bee II on Saturday 29th November, to finalise fencing and other odd jobs around the kitchen garden. We appreciate your assistance; even though the fence wasn’t finished we can see the final result and will hold another working bee early 2015 to get these last few things finished. 5|Page COMMUNITY SINGING NIGHT GOVERNING COUNCIL NEWS CANTEEN ROSTER Friday 5th December Monday 8th December Wednesday 10th Dec.
