Sample Responses to Scholastic Assessment Books Comprehension Questions Level E: From Frog’s Lunch by Dee Lillegard On the section of the assessment titled “Comprehension Questions Section” the child may respond to the questions in numerous ways. There are many acceptable responses to each question. The child’s response is acceptable as long as the response to this section of the assessment demonstrates that he or she understood the meaning of the text. As the child answers each question, be sure to record the response carefully, using extra paper if needed. Here are several examples of the wide variety of acceptable responses to each question on this part of the assessment: 1. Literal Question: What did frog see that he could eat for lunch? Frog saw a fly and said it would be good for his lunch. 2. Literal Question: What did the fly do when he saw frog? The fly kept buzzing closer and closer to the frog. The fly flew around frog because they do it all the time 3. Inferential Question: How was frog able to catch the fly and eat him for his lunch? Frog sat very still and quiet until the fly came close enough. When the fly did get close enough he “snapped” him and caught him with his long tongue. He shot out his tongue and caught the fly. 4. Inferential Question: What did the frog do with the fly after he snapped it? Why did he say, “Mmmm,” and, “Good lunch!” Accept any reasonable response. Frog ate the fly after he snapped it. He said, “Good lunch,” because frogs like to eat insects. He liked the fly because he said, “Mmmm,” and that is what we say when we like something. He ate it and said it was tasty. August, 2013 TCRWP
