Rules/Vocabulary:
A noun is a word that names a person, place, or thing.
* A noun may appear in any part of a sentence.
* A noun may name one or more than one person, place, or thing.

garbage, bags, trees, flowers, balls, paper, cars, books, food
Expand the Idea:
Nouns can name one thing or more than one thing.
Rules & Vocabulary:
A singular noun names one person, place, or thing.
A plural noun names more than one person, place, or thing.
* A –s to form the plural or most nouns. Add –es to form the plural of nouns ending in s, x, ch, or, sh.
* Nouns ending in –y form plurals in two ways:
1. If a noun ends in a consonant + y, change the y to an i and add –es.
family = families
buddy = buddies
2. If a noun ends in a vowels + y, add –s.
boy = boys
key = keys

Rules/ Vocabulary:
* A few nouns have special plural forms.
* A few nouns have the same plural form as their singular form.
* To form the plural of most nouns, add –s or –es. Nouns that have special plural forms and nouns that
have the same singular and plural forms do not follow this rule.

Rules/ Vocabulary:
* A common noun names any person, place, or thing.
* A proper noun names a particular person, place, or thing.
* Notice that a proper noun always begins with a capital letter.
* If a proper noun has more than one word, each word will begin with a capital letter.

Expand The Idea:
By naming common nouns, such as student, teacher, and building. Ask students to name proper nouns
that could replace the common nouns.
Rules / Vocabulary:
A possessive noun is a noun that shows who or what owns or has something.
A singular possessive noun is a singular noun that owns something or has something.
* Add an apostrophe and –s to a singular possessive noun to make it plural.
Extend the Idea:
Not all words ending in an apostrophe and –s are possessive nouns. Some words that end this way are
contractions.
Rules / Vocabulary:
A plural possessive noun that shows ownership.
* When a plural noun ends in –s, add an apostrophe after the –s (s’) to form the plural possessive noun.
* When a plural noun does not in in –s, add an apostrophe and then the s (‘S) to form the plural
possessive of the noun.
Rules/Vocabulary:
An abbreviation is the shortened form of the word.
* An abbreviation usually ends with a period.
* Abbreviations are used for most titles of people before names.
* Abbreviations are also used for days and months.
Expand the Idea:
Point out that only certain words are abbreviated. Most readers recognize common abbreviations.
