Henri Matisse
was given a paintbox when he was sick and had to
spend a whole year lying in bed. That was in 1890,
when Matisse was already 21 years old and a
drawing
lawyer’s clerk. He liked
so much
that he decided he would rather become an
artist. And so he developed a completely
new modern approach to art.
Henri Matisse c. 1898
Although he was perfectly able to paint things very realistically he
tried to portray everything as simply as possible. At the end of
colored paper with scissors and
his life he cut out
stuck the shapes together.

On the last pages in this book you will find
them all listed with the year in which they were produced.

An old Greek myth tells the story of Icarus and his father Daedalus, who made themselves wings out of
feathers and wax. How would you tell the rest of the story?

Only a few snippings of paper? And yet we can make out a colored woman surrounded by brightly colored flowers!
Maybe you would like to cut out some more flowers from the colored pages in the middle of this book and stick them here?
Or what about a child? If you look carefully at the photos on page 4 you will find the woman again!

Matisse wanted to represent things using shapes which
were as simple as possible. That is why, one day, he had the idea of using
scissors and glue. He cut patterns and shapes out of
colored paper.

You can try it too. You have some
, don’t you?
You might like to add to Matisse’s cut-out patterns
which you can see in this book.

Or maybe you would prefer to draw them?
