Dear Parents and Guardians:
The Middletown Township Public School District is excited to offer our students a Summer Program with an
extensive selection of enrichment courses at a cost of $40 per class. If your child is part of the District Free and
Reduced Lunch Program, please contact the curriculum office for registration information. The expectation is
that all students will adhere to the District Code of Conduct, as per the student handbook. Any student who
violates the Code of Conduct may be removed from the program.
We encourage you to look throughout the brochure for the valuable opportunities that will be available to your
children. Each week in the summer students are afforded a new enrichment opportunity Monday through
Thursday.
Programs are available for students in every grade level and range from hands-on science, language arts and
mathematics for students in grades K-8, to SAT prep and college application essay writing for our high school
students.
All programs will be taught by certified teachers and held at Middletown Village Elementary School, Ocean
Avenue Elementary School, Bayshore Middle School and Middletown South High School. Room assignments
and confirmation of programs will be emailed to you by June 26, 2015.
Programs are available based on enrollment and budgetary constraints. Therefore, we ask if you are interested
in attending, please register online from Friday, May 1, 2015 through Friday, May 15, 2015. May 15th is a strict
deadline so that we can fully prepare for the summer program. Late registration will not be accepted.

Summer Enrichment Programs
Kindergarten
Animal Stories
Students will create a group story with the genre, Realistic Fiction. The story will focus on animal facts. Students
will build concept vocabulary and develop listening comprehension. The instructional focus will center on concepts
about print and beginning narrative analysis including story elements such as characters, settings, problem, plot,
and solution.

Readers’ Theater – “Little Ham”
Students will be able to read a script and act out a story in an entertaining form. Readers’ Theater is a reading
activity where children are encouraged to “ham it up” and use intonation and appropriate gestures while acting as a
storybook character. It will provide repeated reading practice to build fluency.

Writing Through Picture Books
In this course, picture books will be used as an inspiration for writing. Students will improve writing skills while
exploring literature from some of their favorite authors and illustrators. These delightful discoveries will help spark
their creativity and generate an excitement to express themselves!

Reading through the SmartBoard
Children will explore through interactive activities using the SmartBoard. A SmartBoard is an interactive, electronic
whiteboard, which can enhance instruction and learning. Students will review basic phonics skills through activities
on the board. They will read stories on the white board and learn different strategies to help them become better
readers. Students will also complete a variety of hands-on activities following instruction. This class is a fun,
interactive way to motivate young learners to continue their love for learning through the summer.

Mathematics through the SmartBoard
Children will explore through interactive activities using the SmartBoard. A SmartBoard is an interactive, electronic
whiteboard which can enhance instruction and learning. Students will review basic math skills through activities on
the board. They will apply their prior and newly learned knowledge to complete a variety of math activities. Practice
will include: adding and subtracting, fact families, fact triangles, money, clocks, and more! Students will develop the
skills they need to prepare themselves for their upcoming school year. This hands-on class is a fun, interactive way
to motivate young learners to continue their love for learning through the summer.

Read What You Love, Love What You Read
Reading can be fun when fabulous stories are paired with exciting activities. The purpose of this course is to utilize
reading comprehension strategies (making connections, visualizing, inferring, asking questions, synthesizing,
summarizing, predictions/other ideas, story vocabulary, thoughts about characters, and determining importance) to
build better comprehension skills while fostering children’s love for reading. Children will come away with a
toolbox of reading comprehension strategies to utilize for the rest of their lives.

Countertop Chemistry
Calling all scientists! Did you ever want to mix some of this to some of that and see what happens? Well, grab your
goggles and lab coat and enter the laboratory! All participants will use the magic of chemistry to transform the
contents of your kitchen into experiments that are fun and engaging while learning the nature of science! They will
investigate the properties of matter, explore chemical and physical changes and other concepts in chemistry! Four 1 ½ hour classes (11:00 am – 12:30 pm)

Many Moments

This course will challenge students to think outside the box in problem solving situations. Students will work in

Students will be engaged (and better prepared for 3rd grade) as they explore Google Drive to create a document,
presentation and draw based on an animal of their choice. They will also learn to navigate Google Chrome and use

enacted. Readers’ Theater frees the performers and the audience from the physical limitations of conventional
theater, letting the imagination soar. Come and enjoy the magic of Readers’ Theater!

Things That Go
High and low, watch that plane, train, and car go! Buckle your seat belts, because we’ll be going on a fast ride to the
finish line! Students will explore Newton’s Laws of Motion in this interactive hands-on class. Little physicists will
design and build several different “things that go!” Students will learn the science behind and create hovercrafts,
catapults and balloon powered cars. They will race their creations and calculate speed and total distance traveled!

Building Bridges
Get into the exciting world of engineering! In this course students will learn about the three main types of bridges:
suspension, arch and beam. They will learn how bridges stay up, what could make them fall down, and find out
about structures that make bridges taller, stronger, and more useful. Students will design and build bridges that can
withstand the greatest amount of force! Using the STEM model, young engineers will design, build, test and
redesign their creations!

Wacky Weather
What should I wear today? In this course, students will participate in interactive experiments to learn about the
properties of weather. Young meteorologists will learn about the different types of clouds and create clouds in a jar,
they will analyze the relationship between air pressure and temperature. As a final project, students will create their
own weather forecast video!

In this course, students will view examples of blogs, learn the basic elements of blog creation, and then use
technology to create a blog from the perspective of a fictional character. The student blogs will consist of text,

Read to Write – Grade 5
Reading to Write is a research-based course that focuses on how reading interesting and challenging selections is
the most productive way to embrace the writing process. Whether students are reading a textbook for a class
discussion, articles for a paper or thesis, online documents, or even just a newspaper, the ability to read critically is
essential to writing or to public speaking. As preparation for composition, critical reading leads to stronger
comprehension. It also sparks critical thinking and reasoning. In this course, students will learn comprehension
strategies such as connecting to text, which will help them with written and oral response to all literature.

In this course, students will use the close reading signpost strategies as illustrated in Kylene Beers book titled Notice and Note to
facilitate students’ comprehension and engagement with their summer reading books. Each day a mini lesson will be taught to
set a focus for reading, time for independent reading with a purpose, individual reading conferences, and follow up with class
discussion and how to conduct an effective book talk. Students will learn to read with increased stamina while improving their
inferencing skills. This course will focus on the first three signposts and it is recommended students take this course prior to
Summer Reading Book Club 2.

Roller Coaster Science
You’re racing down the track at 70 miles per hour, taking sharp turns and large loops. Your heart is pounding and your stomach
feels like it is by your toes. You say to yourself, “Hold on, this is going to be a wild ride!” Why is the first hill always the largest?
How does the roller coaster have enough energy to continue moving? Students will learn the answers to these questions while
exploring the physics behind roller coasters and other amusement rides. Using many laws in physics, the students will design,
build, and test their own roller coasters.

Judge and Jury
Innocent or guilty? In this interactive introduction to law and the court system, students will participate in a mock trial where
they will take turns playing prosecutor, defendant, judge, and jury. The mock trial has proven to be an effective tool for learning
about the law, questioning techniques, critical thinking and oral advocacy skills.

“Choose Your Own Adventure” Creative Writing
Have you ever read a book and wished it had ended differently? Or that you could change some of the choices a character made?
In this course, students will combine reading and writing skills to write an original “choose your own adventure” story. Using a
teacher selected adventure story as the literature focus, elements unique to this type of story, such as the second-person point of
view, setting, character, plot, and conflict will be explored to assist students in creating their own.

Media Literacy: Commercial Advertising
In this course, students will critique and analyze commercial advertising. They will explore how media is used to persuade
people to purchase and utilize certain products. As a culminating activity, students will be given the opportunity to use iPads to
create their own persuasive commercial.

Impariamo L’Italiano
The course will focus on foreign language learning in thematic lessons each day that would incorporate cultural
awareness of the country through cooperative activities such as, singing, dancing, games, storytelling and arts/crafts
projects! The thematic lessons will focus on basic Italian greetings, colors, numbers, body parts, animals and more
depending on the age group.

Adding Drama to Any Class
Tired of boring presentations in class? Wonder how some people make theirs so interesting? Want to make YOURS
stand out? Try adding a little drama! This class will explore how techniques learned in drama class--vocal variety,
creating a picture, setting a mood--can add some punch to your classroom presentations. We'll explore how to give a
presentation in language arts, math, science, social studies, or even world language!

Getting Ready for Algebra in Grade 9 – (Current Grade 8 Students)
This course will review key Pre-Algebra topics that are critical for success in Algebra I in high school. Topics would
include: fraction operations, evaluating variable expressions, order of operations, properties of real numbers, real
number operations, solving simple linear equations, and plotting points on the coordinate plane. Note: This course
will utilize the iPad Fuse Algebra program.

For students entering Algebra II
This course is designed for students who have completed Algebra I and are entering Algebra II in September and
would like to review and strengthen their Algebra skills. It will provide students the opportunity to explore and
investigate essential algebraic concepts, necessary for success in Algebra II, using various applications for the
iPad. Throughout the course, students will also have the opportunity to work together to strategize on various
problem solving techniques. The focus of this interactive course is Linear and Quadratic Functions. This course
