CAMP BREAKDOWN: The Cubs have 63 players in camp, including 23 non‐roster invitees and one player (Zac Rosscup) on the 60‐day D.L. … the breakdown: 35 pitchers, six catchers, 13 infielders and nine outfielders.  Chicago has 11 former first‐round (including supplemental round) draft picks in camp, including its top selections in the 2011 (Javier Baez), 2012 (Albert Almora), 2013 (Kris Bryant) and 2014 (Kyle Schwarber) drafts.  This year’s camp has players from seven countries or commonwealths represented: the United States, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Japan, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela. JOE MADDON AT THE HELM: Joe Maddon begins his second season as manager of the Cubs after he was named the 2015 N.L. Manager of the Year by the BBWAA … Maddon led the Cubs to 97 victories last season, the most for a manager in his first season with Chicago, surpassing Jim Frey’s 96 wins in 1984.  The 2016 season marks Maddon’s 42nd year in professional baseball, his 23rd at the major league level and 11th as a major league manager.  Maddon previously managed the Rays for nine years from 2006‐14, leading Tampa Bay to four post‐season appearances (2008, 2010, 2011, 2013) and winning the American League pennant in 2008.
