Dogs Trust Volunteering Pack

Volunteer for us and make a
difference to dogs' lives. We couldn't
do as much as we do for dogs without
volunteers - they really are crucial to
our work.
So, if you have spare time on your
hands and would be able to commit to
volunteering on a fairly regular basis,
we'd love to hear from you.
Whether you can offer hands-on help
with the dogs, or assist in other ways
around the centre, your help could
make a real positive difference to our
dogs and dedicated members of staff.
Here's a little bit about some of the
volunteer opportunities that may be
available at your local Dogs Trust
Rehoming Centre.
If you love dogs and want to help with
caring for them, aiding with
rehabilitation and getting them out of the
kennels for essential exercise and mental
stimulation, perhaps one of these roles will
suit you. Because we never destroy a
healthy dog, some of our dogs may require
more help than others with getting to know
and trusting humans again.
Can you help with....?
• Dog training
• Dog walking
• Dog socialising
• kennel cleaning
Other Rehoming Centre 'duties'
Perhaps, you're more of a 'people person'
and would prefer to help our staff with the
smooth running of the centre?
Do any of these roles appeal to you?
• Pre-adoption home visitor
• Office cleaning / laundry
• Gardening / maintenance
• General office duties e.g. photocopying, faxing etc.
• Reception and hospitality duties
• Any other duties that you may have the relevant skills for
Not all opportunities will be available at all Rehoming Centres, so please ask at your local
centre for more information and a volunteer application form if you are interested. Sadly,
we are unable to accept help from volunteers under the age of 16, unless accompanied
by an adult at all times.
Volunteer work may not always
be easy, but on the whole, our
volunteers find it very
rewarding. If personal
circumstances mean that you
can't have your own dog,
volunteering can be a great way
to spend regular time with a
hound or two.Cathrine Harrison,
a volunteer dog walker at our
Leeds Rehoming Centre, shares
her experience:
“Like many people, I absolutely
love dogs but am not in a
position to care for one at the moment, so this volunteering is a great way for me to get
my regular dog "fix", while helping out the charity at the same time.
“The centre staff give me dogs of any shape, size or type and we go for a good long
hour's trot around the countryside. I really enjoy it. It's become part of my routine and
even though I'm sure it's not enough to keep me fit, I know it is getting me out in the
fresh air - which I really appreciate as I have an office job.
“I also enjoy the fact that the dogs are benefitting from the walks. I know the Dogs Trust
staff walk all the dogs every day but I know some of the dogs really enjoy their extra
walkies as it keeps them mentally stimulated as well as fit and active."
However, volunteering is not just
about gaining satisfaction from
helping our dogs, but also:
• learning new skills
• building confidence and making
new friends
• getting more involved in the local
community
• having voluntary work on your
CV improves your career options
for future employment
• You may be the first to hear about job vacancies at our local centre
What if hands-on practical help at a Rehoming Centre isn't for you..?
You could…
• join a local fundraising group
• help with collecting donations and donated items
• volunteer to help out at one of our charity shops
• help out at one of our many Rehoming Centre Open Days
If you are interested in any type of fundraising; including sporting events, challenge
events, or organising your own event; please contact our fundraising team on 020 7837
0006 or email [email protected] or go to our website at
www.dogstrust.org.uk/get-involved for more information.
Dogs Trust is working towards the day when all dogs can enjoy a happy life, free from
the threat of unnecessary destruction.
Without dedicated volunteers, this goal will be far harder to reach, so please volunteer
today!
Please contact your local Rehoming Centre for more details and an application
form.
