General Information
The Program
Welcome to Summer Blast! Our program for students grades 1–6 consists
of a morning program, an afternoon half-day camp, and optional day-long
Wednesday fieldtrips. Early morning and late afternoon daycare are available
for parents needing childcare.
The morning program offers both traditional and enrichment classes enabling
children to explore their interests in comfortable and relaxed surroundings.
A sampling of enrichment offerings includes cartooning, puppet-making,
scrapbooking, volleyball and basketball camps, and cooking. Traditional classes such
as math, language arts, and science are also offered. Classes meet four times a week,
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday for five weeks.
Half–day camp starts at noon immediately following the morning program. Camp activities
complement five themed weeks (refer to camp description).

Registration deadline is Monday, May 16, 2011.
All classes are filled on a first come, first served basis.
A non-refundable $200 deposit, credited towards tuition, is required at the time of registration.
Confirmation of registration will be acknowledged by mail or kid mail.
Parents will be informed by the Business Office of any balance due on June 1.
Class changes are permitted up until the morning of the second class day, provided space is available.
Fewer than the minimum number of students may result in the cancellation of a class. Should this occur, parents will
be notified and alternate classes will be suggested.

’’ Students arriving between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. are required to sign in with morning care staff.
There is no daycare charge for those arriving between 8:31 and 9 a.m. Carline will
be available between 8:50 – 9 a.m. for students who prefer arriving closer to the
starting time. We request students to be seated on the right side of the vehicle
with their belongings, ready to “hop out” as soon as a staff member opens
the door.
’’ Faculty will assist students into vehicles at noon pick up, 12 – 12:10 p.m. To
expedite the flow of traffic, drivers are requested to please remain in their
vehicles at all times.
’’ Although morning carline is restricted to one lane, two lanes are available
at noon. A staff member will direct drivers to the shortest line. A friendly
reminder to drivers: as a cautionary measure, please refrain from using cell
phones in carline – it’s the law!

Every student will receive a T-shirt on the first day. The
T-shirt can be worn any day of Summer Blast, but is
required attire on every Wednesday fieldtrip. Do remember to indicate child’s T-shirt size on the registration form.
INDEPENDENCE DAY HOLIDAy
– 4th OF JULY
In observance of Independence Day, school will be
closed on Monday, July 4. Crestview will celebrate
the occasion on Friday, July 1 before noon dismissal with a hotdog lunch with all the trimmings. Everyone is encouraged to dress in
red, white, or blue.

1st Grade Math Adventures | Grade 1 | Ms. Deac
First Grade, here we come! Math puzzles and brain teasers………WOW! Open
to all students entering first grade in fall, this class is proof that math is not drudgery. Spend summer learning math the fun way. Children can brush up on math
skills, as well as learn new skills to extend their math readiness for 1st Grade. Be
prepared to have a marvelous time learning math with Ms. Deac. Join the group!!
SUPERHEROES: WRITING COMICS WITH A PUNCH! | Grades 1–6

Who is Superman’s father? Is it true that Wonder Woman is an Amazonian
princess? What’s the deal with the Hulk and his anger management issues?
Each week we will delve into the origins of your favorite comic book heroes (and
heroines). In true fan boy and girl spirit, you’ll have the opportunity to continue
their stories by creating comic book panels incorporating new adventures and
villains. Got an idea for an original character? Design a t-shirt showcasing your
superhero!
ADVENTURES UNDER THE SEA | Grade 1–6 | MS. VALENCIA
In this class, we will dive deep into the ocean’s depths and learn about the amazing, fascinating, mysterious ocean world! With fun art projects, fascinating videos,
and cool games, we will learn about the amazing underwater creatures! We’ll
talk about mystical creatures of the deep, such as the Loch Ness monster and the
coelacanth. We’ll even learn about pirates and explorers’ adventures at sea. Join
Ms. Valencia in this fun, adventurous class!
PUPPETS | Grade 2–4 | Materials Fee $20 | MS. PORTER
This is a multi-media sculpture class centered on creating unique original puppet
designs inspired by master artists and designers. We will listen to stories and fairytales from all over the world and make up our own. Then, we will create original
puppets by drawing, painting and sculpting characters inspired by the stories.
ANIMALIA | Grades 2–5 | MS. THOMPSON
Evolution works in mysterious ways! Have you ever wondered why an elephant’s
ears are so big? Or why the sloth’s fingers are so long? How about why the
hagfish sometimes ties himself into knots? In Animalia, we will be exploring the
astounding world of bizarre animals! Come monkey around with us!
THE ESSENTIALS OF BASKETBALL – BASKETBALL CAMP | Grades 3–6
| Mr. Liggett
Mr. Liggett has a great deal of experience in both basketball and volleyball as a
player and coach. He played college basketball at the University of Oklahoma
which included a berth in the 2002 NCAA Final Four. Additionally, Mr. Liggett
played high school volleyball in Oklahoma City at Casady High School earning
Team MVP honors and All Southwest Preparatory Conference. Mr. Liggett was an
assistant coach on the 2004-2005 Casady High School varsity boys basketball
team and an assistant on the 2008-2009 Greenhill Hornets junior varsity in Dallas, TX. In volleyball, Coach Liggett led the 2008 Greenhill Hornets junior varsity
to a 17-1 record and was an assistant coach on the 2008 SPC championship
team. Currently, Mr. Liggett coaches JV boys basketball at Flintridge Preparatory
School.
Students will learn the fundamental movements for all essential skills in the sport
of basketball. This includes a breakdown and refinement of the jump shot, dribbling, passing, right/left handed lay-ups, and defensive fundamentals. The first 30
minutes of the class each day will focus on the correct process for each skill with a
few competitive shooting drills to maintain enthusiasm. The last 15 minutes will include scrimmaging where the students can utilize all their skills they have learned
that particular day.
LEARN HOW TO CREATE YOUR OWN SCRAPBOOK | Grades 4–6

Use your creativity to create a great scrapbook filled with wonderful memories!
Students can pick their own theme – Pet Album, All About ME, Vacation, or a gift
album. Students will learn what a scrapbook is and how to create this timeless
keepsake. Each student will be given an album so they can start creating their
keepsake on the first day! Students will need to bring their photos on the first day
of class!

Learning Through Literature – Strengthening Reading
Skills | Grade 1 | Ms. Deac
All Aboard! Get a head start on First Grade. Open to all students entering first grade
in the fall, this class gives children a chance to stretch and extend reading skills that will
prepare them for 1st grade. Your child will be led by Ms. Deac on a five-week journey
focusing on learning through literature and fun-filled games to build and strengthen
early reading skills.

FANTASY AND REALITY: MAKING ART WITH THE MASTERS | Grades 1–3

Create drawings, paintings, sculptures, photograms, and collages inspired by the works
of master artists. We will look at the work of famous artists who create work based on
their surroundings and their imagination and then make our own original work inspired
by their technique and subject matter. Projects include Genre Scenes, Fantastic Creatures and Fantasy Landscapes, City Scenes, Still Life, Portraiture, and Abstract Designs.

Let’s cook up some food that is delicious and nutritious! In this class, we’ll use the food
pyramid to plan out healthy menu choices. We’ll tackle breakfast, lunch, and dinner
items that are fun, easy, and tasty!

AROUND THE WORLD ADVENTURES! | Grades 1–6 | MATERIALS FEE $10

In this class, you will explore different cultures and lands in our wonderful world! Join
Ms. Valencia as we embark on a wondrous journey through the continents using art, geography, music, and social studies to “travel around” the world. Students will learn various map skills in order to locate the fascinating places we will discover. We will watch
captivating videos depicting fascinating cultures and customs. In addition, students will
create an assortment of art masterpieces inspired by different cultures and countries.
We will learn folk tales, legends, songs, and dances from distant lands! Our taste buds
will be treated to delicious treats from around the world. Also, students will learn about
holidays celebrated in different countries. By the end of summer, we will know so much
more about the diverse cultures of this magnificent place we live in - earth!
MYTHBUSTERS | Grades 2–5 | MS. THOMPSON
Have you ever wondered if it’s true that the bathroom is the place in your school
that grows the most bacteria? What about which method of covering a sneeze is
the best? In Mythbusters, we will be uncovering myths like these, testing them using
the scientific method, and then recording our results to see if the myths are actually
facts! Come investigate with us!
Sports Fundamentals II | Grades 3–6 | Mr. Brown
Daily conditioning, Skills, and Drills: T-Ball/Baseball (Week 1), Basketball/Volleyball
(Week 2), Soccer (Week 3), Flag Football (Week 4), Game Week (Week 5). Boys and
girls have an opportunity to:
• Propel their knowledge and skill level in various team sports to new heights by game
simulation drills.
• Participate in games and action-packed activities that promote teamwork and
sportsmanship.
• Improve agility, coordination, strength, and cardio-conditioning.
• Gain confidence and have fun.
JAPANESE ANIME | Grades 3–6 | MR. DAINES
In this class we will focus on two subjects that I am fond of: Japanese and Anime. We
will learn Japanese vocabulary, common phrases and greetings, and other basic conversational language. Dive into the culture, learn about, and have fun with lessons on
food, school, house design, and karaoke. Experience children’s anime as we watch
several popular children’s anime and discover new ones. All anime shows will tie into our
goal of learning about a new language and culture. Write your name in kana, surprise
your friends with the ability to count in a new language, amaze yourself with the fascinating challenge of a new culture. Come and join the fun.

Week 2: Get on the Move
Fieldtrip: Leo Carrillo Beach
Who doesn’t love a day spent in the sun? For the tide pool buffs this is a
great place to find all sorts of sea life nestled in the pools, reefs and sea
caves. Build the ultimate castle, relax in the refreshing waves, or explore
one of the friendly trails in this state park.
Week 3: A Summer of Fun
FieldTrip: El Capitan Theater
Let’s get things rolling by journeying down to the Hollywood Walk of Fame
for a unique movie experience at the historic El Capitan Theater. You can
see the stars, visit the Grauman’s Chinese Theater and experience the
thrill of this vibrant movie town. We will be seeing the latest Disney film,
Cars 2, and a live stage show.

FieldTrip: Hurricane Harbor
Are you brave enough to dare the Tornado, a
60 ft funnel of fear ready to spin you like crazy?
Maybe you want to tame the high speed slides of
Blake Snake summit. For those seeking relaxation,
kick up your feet at the Lizard Lagoon. No matter
what, it’s time to cool off on any of these rides for
all ages.
Week 5: When You Wish…
FieldTrip: Disneyland
The happiest place on Earth is right in our backyard. Scream from Space Mountain, Matterhorn
and Thunder Mountain, sing along with pirates,
spook out with ghosts, or talk with your favorite
princess. We will depart one hour earlier and
return one hour later.
SPORTS FUNDAMENTALS I | GRADES 1 – 2 | MR. BROWN

WIZARDS IN TRAINING | Grades 1–6 | Materials Fee $15 | MRS. FESTEN
Are you a muggle who secretly wishes to join Dumbledore’s army? Come aboard
the Hogwarts Express for the ultimate Harry Potter book club. We’ll be conducting
potions experiments, researching and developing new plant species for herbology, and creating interesting animals in care of magical creatures. Test your Potter
knowledge with trivia games. Of course, there will be muggle quidditch matches
as well. Hope you don’t get earwax flavored Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Bean.
Spoiler Alert: All seven books will be discussed in this class!
HUMANOLOGY | Grades 2–5 | MS. THOMPSON
Did you know that more than 300 million cells die in your body every minute? Or
that babies have more bones than adults do? What about that the human body
can survive without food, but not without sleep? In Humanology, we will be diving
deep into the wondrous world of the human body. Come dip your toes into the
fun!
BONKERS FOR BOARD GAMES! | Grades 2–6 | MS. VALENCIA
It’s time to rediscover the fun times that can be had playing board games! Board
games are an efficient way for students to learn how to strategize, problem solve,
as well use math and language skills in a fun and educational setting. In this class,
students will utilize their skills to play games, such as Scattergories, Life, Monopoly,
Sorry!, Guess Who?, and so many more – some games will even be played on
the SMARTboard! From all the hands-on exposure playing board games in class,
students will be prepared to use their imaginations and the elements from their
favorite games and create brand new board games in class!

We will focus on the team aspect of volleyball in respect to indoor volleyball. Additionally, we will learn how to play doubles which is very popular in beach volleyball.
MEDIEVAL TIMES | Grades 3 – 6 | MR. DAINES
Feast like a king! We are in search of brave souls to hold a medieval tournament,
make castles, read about King Arthur, and feast as kings. Join the fun, come learn
about a fascinating time period and participate in the revelry.
CARTOONING AND COMIC CHARACTERS | Grades 4–6 | MATERIALS FEE $20

This class will focus on learning the fundamentals of cartooning to create a comic
strip or book. Students will learn to create original and unique characters using
traditional techniques including designing with basic shapes, shading, caricature
and perspective. Then we will scan the drawings and use computer techniques to
present the final comic strip or book.

Who is ready for some friendly competition? This year, campers will be placed in core groups (K-6) to participate in various activities that will follow the theme of the week. Cooperation and teamwork will rule the day as all campers will build lasting friendships.
Fun classes will be embedded into the camp program. Campers will rotate through these classes with their core group as the week
progresses. As in years past, Friday will be a day to escape the summer heat with water games on the field. We are planning a
schedule filled with fun crafts, group challenges, movies, hikes and more.
Week 1: Challenge Your Mind
FieldTrip: IMAX/Science Center/Natural History Museum
Two amazing museums are waiting to share their secrets with you. The
Science Center offers a plethora of exciting exhibits including the new
ecosystems room. At the Museum of Natural History, dinosaurs, rare gems
and butterflies await. The IMAX theater, proudly deemed the largest in Los
Angeles, is a movie experience that you will always remember.
Put It On Paper | Grade 1 | Ms. Deac
Calling all students entering first grade in fall! Get a head start on first grade. This
class gives children a chance to continue developing, expanding and polishing
writing skills begun in kindergarten. “I have an idea I want to write down!” Children love to see their thoughts on paper. They enjoy reading their stories and poems. Ms Deac and the children will work on writing, writing, writing, putting their
creative thoughts on paper for Mom and Dad to read. By the end of five weeks,
the kindergarten to first grade writing transition will be a breeze.
Trips are organized and directed by our summer camp director and chaperoned by Crestview staff.
