It’s also bittersweet—many of the students I’ve gotten to know will be graduating and leaving for college. They’re also sad to leave, they tell me; but they will soon come to know that the connection to the school and its community will live on. In fact, at this year’s reunion, there will be quite a large number of alums who are coming back for their 65th and 70th reunions! I am privileged to be located at the school where I have the opportunity both to build relationships with students and to see where help is needed, both individually and throughout the school. Your generosity enables A&F to provide financial and in-kind support across all studio departments and to so many students. Just recently, for example, I walked into the Little Flower Theatre and noticed that the carpet was not only unsightly, it was unsafe. Through the generosity of ABC Carpet, we can now fix this. In addition, A&F will soon be giving out 235 awards totaling over $130,000. These awards come from A&F’s scholarship endowment and the nearly 150 named funds established by our generous donors. These awards are based on both need and merit and the students’ reactions to receiving this support are priceless. The donors of these named funds receive thank you notes from the students along with samples of their work, so they too get to see how important their funding is to the students. Today, I walked around the building and heard the senior chorus and orchestra rehearsing for the concerto concert, saw the drama students rehearsing for Our Town and Cabaret, and watched the dance students rehearsing for their graduation dance concert, other students auditioning for the gala honoring Ben Vereen, and students editing the videotape they shot from Rising Stars. Then, on the seventh floor, I admired all the new art work on display. The talent and energy here never ceases to amaze me! Come see for yourself, either by attending a performance or coming for a tour. There are quite a few shows coming up including: • Cabaret – May 2–5 • Show Choir Concert – May 3 • A Tribute to Ben Vereen – May 20 • Graduation Dance Concert – May 31 & June 1 • Symphony Orchestra & Chorus Concert – June 7–8 From the Executive t t Dear Alumni and Friends, DIRECTOR e m Alumni & Friends of Fiorello H. The 2013 Reunion will be held on Saturday, June 8th. We have very enthusiastic classes this year and are expecting alumni who will be celebrating their 5th to 70th reunions! We have an exciting line-up this year: • The reunion for Music & Art alumni will be held at the “Castle” on 135th Street • The reunion for LaGuardia alumni will be held at the 65th Street school • SPAA, the School of Performing Arts Alumni Association, is planning its own reunion The M&A reunion will begin at 1 pm in the auditorium. There will be a tour of the school starting at 1:30 pm and then cocktails on the Terrace at 3:15 pm. Dinner will be served in the cafeteria from 4:45 – 6:15 pm (the food will be much better than the school’s menu!), and then buses will depart at 6:30 pm to get everyone to the 65th Street school in time for the Semi-Annual Concert. LaGuardia alumni will meet at their school on 65th Street. The program is the same except for cocktails— because there are students in school setting up for the Semi-Annual Concert, no alcohol is allowed. Also, dinner will begin at 5:30 pm as no travel is required to the Semi-Annual. Classes will have Friday night and Sunday for their own activities—a preference voiced by alumni at the last two reunions. Many classes are planning special activities around the reunion; you can contact your class leader for more information. Those classes with leaders have a much better time at the reunion. The following classes do not yet have leaders: 1973, 1978, 1983, 1993 and 1998. If you are a member of one of these classes and would like to become a leader, please call the A&F office. We can work with you to help organize your class. So start organizing those old photos and plan to attend the Semi-Annual Symphony & Chorus Concert, which will feature works by Bernstein and Mozart. For information on tickets, hotels and menus go to: https://alumniandfriends.org/news/reunion2013. A list of your classmates who have signed up for the reunion (updated weekly on Fridays), along with contact information for class leaders, is also on our website at: https://alumniandfriends.org/news/see-who-coming-your-class. Murray Braunstein Memorial, May 13, 2013 A celebration of the life and career of Murray Braunstein, beloved English Department faculty member at the School of Performing Arts and LaGuardia High School, will be held on Monday, May 13, 2013, starting at 4 pm in LaGuardia’s Little Flower Theatre. Special guests will include Suzanne Vega, Jennifer Hines, Ivy Austin and Melissa Manchester. All alumni, faculty and friends are welcome to come and celebrate Murray’s life and accomplishments. If you would like to make a donation in his memory, you can contribute to the Murray Braunstein Leadership Fund (created by Murray), by sending a check made out to Alumni & Friends of LaGuardia to: 4 Alumni & Friends of LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts 100 Amsterdam Avenue, Room 853 New York, NY 10023 Please include on the memo line: Murray Braunstein Fund. Sponsored by 5 EVENTS Forty Years of Jazz Fame On January 28th, 2013, more than 30 world-class jazz musicians gathered together to honor one very special educator who touched all their lives as a mentor, teacher and friend. In the early ’70s, Justin DiCioccio developed a formal training program for jazz at Music & Art because he believed that learning how to improvise requires a level of sensitivity and communication that enables students to become better human beings. This became the first secondary-school jazz curriculum in the U.S. The program featured many genres of jazz, including big band, Latin, Afro-Cuban, Dixieland and blues. Many of the musicians hadn’t played together for nearly 40 years and the evening was as outstanding for them as it was for the 900 people in attendance, many of whom referred to the concert as “special and intimate.” All juniors and seniors currently in jazz bands received free seats so that they could experience, firsthand, the legacy of their predecessors. You can see the half-page article on the concert in The New York Times, written by alum Ralph Blumenthal, at: http://cityroom. blogs.nytimes.com/2013/01/29/a-jazz-reunionat-the-fame-school/. The legacy of jazz at Music & Art goes back to the school’s beginning with such notable alumni as Shorty Rogers (M&A ’42), Bernie Glow (M&A ’42), Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson (M&A ’49), Peter Nero (M&A ’51), Fred Lipsius (M&A ’61) Jimmy Owens (M&A ’61) and Billy Cobham (M&A ’62). In 1969, Yusef Lateef and Donald Byrd each spent a full semester teaching jazz students. A&F is grateful to Gerstein Fisher, Viacom, Ernst & Young Insurance Practice, Dasani and alumna Mady Chalk for their sponsorship of the concert. We are also grateful to our musical director, Arturo O’Farrill, and the fabulous musicians who played, including: Ron Asta Kevin Blancq Alex Brofsky Bobby Broom Abraham Burton Don Byron Bryan Carrott Paquito D’Rivera Kenny Washington Mark Fineberg Bob Franceschini 6 Daniel Freedman Marcus Gilmore Andy Gonzales Wayne Goodman Charles Gordon Jon Gordon Carlos Henriquez Nabate Isles Michael Leonhart Jason Lindner Jeremy Manasia Left to right: Pete Nater, Mark John Pizzarelli. A Walk Down Memory Lane (for M&A Alumni) I was up at the “Castle” making arrangements for the reunion and had my camera with me. I thought our M&A alumni would enjoy these. 7 LaGuardia NEWS Did You Know? By Gabriel Kosakoff • In 1936, Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia established the High School of Music & Art. This was one of his pet projects during his tenure at City Hall. The mayor was very paternal about M&A and referred to it as “my baby.” He considered the High School of Music & Art to be the “most hopeful accomplishment” of his administration. • Mayor LaGuardia was a frequent visitor to Music & Art, often bringing gifts with him. One of the more memorable presents was a bronze statue of the world-renowned conductor Arturo Toscanini by the Italian sculptor Onorio Ruotolo, who was a friend of the mayor. The statue was displayed on a pedestal in the main lobby of the school. It quickly became a very popular meeting place for students who would make dates by saying “I’ll meet you at ‘Toscanini.’” The sculpture is now located in the back lobby of LaGuardia outside of the Concert Hall. • Lydia Joel, former Chairperson of the Dance Department at the School of Performing Arts, was also the Editor-in-Chief of Dance Magazine. • In 1947, the School of Performing Arts was established under the supervision of Dr. Franklin J. Keller in a 1894 school building in the Times Square area on West 46th Street. The Arts featured in the curriculum were Dance, Drama, Instrumental Music and, for a short time, Photography. • When the 1980 movie Fame was filmed (about the H.S. of Performing Arts), the Board of Education refused to give permission to the film’s producers to use the PA building. Because of this, the outside scenes were filmed in front of a closed church located across the street from the PA building and the indoor scenes at Haaron H.S. on 10th Avenue and 49th Street, which is now part of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Several classrooms were altered to resemble the interior of the Performing Arts building. M&A ’69 Exhibition Marla Lipkin, a very accomplished and prolific artist in her own right, is offering her classmates from M&A 1969 an opportunity to show their art work and play music at a group show in November 2013 at Gallery 34, in Long Island City, New York. If you would like to exhibit your work, please contact Marla Lipkin at [email protected].
