Would you like to learn a new language? Or just communicate through windows and across noisy rooms with your friends? Come learn American Sign Language! Campers will learn the ABCs, conversation skills, and signs to teach their friends and family. Through games and art activities, we will learn about deafness and how to communicate with the deaf. (Grades SK - 6) Ms. Maggie Lang Babysitters Club: Do you love children? Have you always wanted to start a babysitting business? This camp will prepare students to improve their babysitting skills and start their own babysitting business. Campers will learn how to provide care for infants and children, how to stay safe, what to do in an emergency, how to choose age-appropriate activities, and how to recognize and handle a variety of behaviors. Students will also learn the basics of starting a babysitting business. (Grades 5 - 7) Ms. Ellen Noel Backyard Astronomy: Have you ever wondered about the stars and planets in the night sky? Did you know there will be a solar eclipse this summer? What are the different constellations and where did they originate? We will use iPads and other media to answer these questions and discover interesting facts. You will learn to identify the wonderous elements of space. This class will include tournament rules and play for those students that choose to play competitively. (Grades SK - 6) Mr. Boyd & En Passant Staff Chopped – Junior, Dessert Style: Do you love watching Chopped? Do you want to learn how to combine crazy unusual ingredients together to create an AMAZING dessert! Then, this is the class for YOU! Chopped-Junior, Dessert Style will teach you skills in baking, creating, decorating, and experimenting with ingredients. On the final day, chefs will experience a real mystery basket where they will have to put their skills to the test. (Grades 4 - 6) Ms. Carly Rudolph Cooking Around the World: It’s summer time, so let’s take a trip around the world . . . in the kitchen! We will stop in Japan, Mexico, Israel, Italy, and France and taste the countries’ delicacies. You will learn about the culture and cook food from each of these countries. In addition, we will celebrate these countries’ traditions. (Grades 4 - 6) Ms. Carly Rudolph Baseball: Join former college and semi-pro baseball player Joe Mohr to improve on and learn new baseball skills, increase your baseball IQ, and create good habits that will serve you throughout your baseball career. We will work on hitting, fielding, throwing and base running. What a great way to spend a summer morning! Players can bring their own equipment. Why do dogs do the things they do? How do you train dogs? With Winston as our “model dog,” we will witness—up close and in real time—how positive reinforcement enables training without the use punishment. We will learn about proper grooming, feeding and exercising, about different dog breeds, types of working dogs, and more! (Grades 2 - 6) Ms. Arielle Hoffman Build Your Own Mini Golf Course: Back by popular demand, this camp is a mini golf lover’s dream! Twists, turns, tunnels and ramps; student will design and build their own mini-golf holes to be played at the end of the week. The premier “gamer” at Community School will share his secrets Build Your Own Professional Skateboard Deck! Saw, sand, drill and design an amazing skateboard deck! We will also ride and/or learn to ride a variety of different skateboards. Helmets and pads required. (Grades 3 - 6) Mr. Joe Mohr Cartoons, Comics & Beyond: Learn the basics of cartooning, character design, layout, inking and more with Community School’s resident cartoonist and illustrator. Mr. Mohr will share his expertise with to play Skinny, Paddle ball, Indoor Card Golf and many more games you never knew existed! Get your game face on and enjoy the fun! (Grades SK 2) Mr. Mike Pieroni Farm to Table: Work in Community School’s garden and with local produce to create simple dishes. Paul Krantmann, local organic farmer, will visit our class to share his knowledge , humor, and even some delicious home-grown veggies! (Grades 4 - 6) Ms. Nicole Post Games, Games, Games! Have you ever played kick ball and capture the flag in the backyard? Or played Uno, SORRY or Spoons on the cool floor inside on a hot, summer day? This class will teach you how to play these and other “classic games” and promises to bring new fun and flair into your lazy, crazy summer. (Grades SK - 2) Ms. Ellen Watts Helping Hands: Students will have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others and lend a helping hand through community service and volunteering their time. Activities will be led by Mrs. Larson and other community service organizations. (Grades 4 - 6) Ms. Karen Larson Hip Hop KA-POW! Pow! Ka-bam! Come be a hip hop superhero! Campers will be introduced to the Hip Hop genre and explore being a dancing superhero. You will use your super skills to design and make your very own cape to be worn in a final performance! (Grades JK - 2) Ms. Amanda Hazelwood Improv for Everyone! Develop presentation skills and learn how to work in an ensemble, while making people laugh through improv comedy! Explore the world of improvisation with Ann Marie Mohr, Washington University instructor of Improv and Advanced Improv, and owner of MohrImprov. On the final day, share a “professional” improv show with your family and friends. It is sure to be hilarious and a lot of fun! They’ll get to explore each country and learn a little bit more about the culture and geography of that area. (Grades 2 - 6) Ms. Jennifer Sheehan Ninja Obstacle Camp: Hi-NRG’s Ninja Obstacle Camp is a great way to build coordination, strength, agility and confidence! Our Unstable Monkey Bars and Cargo Net also await! Obstacles are designed with the young athlete in mind and our enthusiastic, knowledgeable coaches teach proper technique, adding helpful tips to assist in mastering obstacles and making healthy movement FUN! (Grades JK - 4) Out Loud and Outside: We will read and write poetry, playing with words and sounds. We will also create Andy Goldsworthy-inspired art outside about our poems. As we find our voices, we will celebrate by reciting our unique voices on an outside “stage.” (Grades 4 - 6) Ms. Nicole Post Paper Airplane Flight School: Learn the art and science of paper airplanes! We will look at examples, learn techniques, study how flight works and design our own unique paper airplanes! (Grades 1 - 3 and 4 - 6) Mr. Dave Lang Pop Nation: This lively introduction to dance is perfect for students interested in sampling moves and choreography inspired by pop music videos. COCA’s dance faculty will get you moving to ageappropriate favorites like “I Can’t Stop the Feeling” and “Thriller.” Campers will make a prop, hat or t-shirt to use in the final sharing on Friday. No previous dance experience necessary. Bring your own dance shoes or clean, new sneakers. (Grades 1 - 5) COCA Positively Royal: Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Princes and Princesses from all kingdoms will join together to dance and cheer the day away until the clock strikes 12! We will dance, learn positive cheers, play games and make enchanting crafts. You are welcome to dress up as your favorite royal character! (Grades JK - 2) Ms. Amanda Hazelwood Running It! Learn proper stretches and drills/warm ups, along with team building and sportsmanship. We will do an assortment of running activities that include: Color Run with powdered color, tag, water relays, baton relays. In addition we will get to go for short and long long runs through our lovely campus. We have running activities for all levels and abilities so, if you are looking for a fun twist on running or a way to further train to stay in shape for the fall season, come join us. (Grades 2 - 6) Ms. Kara Horton Sketching, Painting, Collage Adventure: Come and sketch in your very own sketchbook outside on the 16 acres of Community School’s beautiful campus. We will bring these drawings to life by creating paintings and collages from our work. Maybe our sketching adventures will take us on the path in the spectacular woods, or to the gleaming pond filled with life under water. Every day will be a different adventure! Students will be immersed in a creative environment that covers science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. Have you ever wanted to be a world-renowned chef? Wish you knew how to cook with an Italian, Mexican or Asian flair? Want a chance to practice basic culinary skills and learn some yummy recipes? Learn how to cook popular recipes from around the world that you can use to impress your friends and family in this fun summer class! (Grades 1 - 3) Ms. Leslie Maguire With camps for 3-year-olds to 6th graders, Community has something for everyone! Whether your child is into arts, academics, or going to camp for the very first time, there’s a camp that will be just right. The majority of our camps are taught by experienced Community School faculty who create a fun-filled and positive atmosphere through an engaging blend of activities. We have also partnered with select St. Louis organizations to bring their incredible programming to Community School. PLAY CAMP Full or Half Day! • ages 3 - 5 May 30 - June 2 June 5 - 9 Children ages 3, 4 and 5 will build, splash, play, create and dance their way through two one-week sessions of Summer Play Camp. Campers will delight in daily indoor and outdoor activities – including water and sand play! Experienced early childhood teachers from Community School will staff the camp. Campers must have had their third birthday by July 1, 2017 and be potty-trained. Full-day campers should bring a non-refrigerated nut-free lunch. FULL-DAY Camp runs from 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. daily; a.m. & p.m. snacks are provided. May 30 - June 2: $280 June 5 - 9: $350 HALF-DAY Camp runs from 9:00 a.m. – Noon and 1:00 - 4:00 daily; snacks are provided. Customized for each age group, this will get your child back in the swing of things before school starts! All ages will experience sports, cooking, art, and recess, as well as differentiated academics—all taught by experienced Community School faculty and staff. Camp runs from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. daily. One week of camp costs $320 or sign up for both at $580. JK & SK - Get ready. Get set. It’s time for school! Younger students will get familiar with school routines before the first day of school. By using favorite children’s books, thematic activities will support school readiness skills such as listening, following directions, and organization, as well as math, reading, and writing. 1st & 2nd - Brush up on valuable skills and learn the importance of school routines. Listening to stories and reading in small groups will increase comprehension and reading fluency. Fun number games STAGES focusing on number sense and computation will help review, reinforce and develop math skills. 3rd & 4th - Third and fourth graders will develop strong critical thinking skills while reading fiction and non-fiction pieces, focusing on determining the main idea, using context clues to develop vocabulary, and summarizing the key concepts of the text. In math, through interactive lessons and games, campers will focus on the concepts of number sense, computation, geometry, and fractions. 5th & 6th - Prepare for success! Fifth and sixth grade students will review math and reading skills through interactive games and fun activities. They will learn different strategies to develop and enhance study skills, including organization and time management. The students will culminate their camp experience with a service learning project. Through critical thinking activities, leadership skills will be enhanced to prepare fifth and sixth graders for the school year. June 26 - July 21 June 26 - 30 1st - 3rd graders 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Travel down the rabbit hole and join Alice, one of literature’s most beloved heroines, in her madcap adventures while exploring all of the theatrical elements of putting on a production! Campers will learn songs, scenes, choreography, and design costumes and props to perform in a mini workshop production of Alice in Wonderland, JR. Students will perform for family and friends on the last day of camp. Cost: $290 July 10 - 21 4th - 6th graders 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. The delicious adventures experienced by Charlie Bucket on his visit to Willy Wonka’s mysterious chocolate factory light up the stage in this captivating adaptation of Roald Dahl’s fantastical tale. Join us for 2 fun-filled weeks as we take you through the full process of putting on a musical theatre production. Campers will learn valuable techniques in voice, dance, acting and auditioning, while exploring all aspects of theatre from costumes to light design. Cost: $580 PROGRAM POLICIES: GRADES Grades listed refer to the grade students will be entering in Fall 2017. LUNCH & SNACKS Campers in full-day programs or who are participating in BOTH morning and afternoon camps will have a supervised lunch. Please pack a non-refrigerated, nut-free lunch. Milk will be provided, as will morning and afternoon snacks. DROP OFF AND PICK UP Community Camps are held at Community School, located at 900 Lay Road in Ladue, just minutes from I-64 and I-170. All campers can be dropped off and picked up in the carpool line. Teachers will be outside to greet children for morning camps beginning at 8:45 a.m. Camp will begin at 9:00 a.m. Dismissal times vary by camp. There will be a $25 fee for late pick-ups. CONFIRMATION & REFUND POLICY Detailed camp information will be mailed prior to the start of each camp. If camp is full, we will contact you within 48 hours by phone. Payment is due in full when registering. There will be no refunds if a camper withdraws after May 15, 2017. This includes vacation schedules, conflicting activities, or changes in plans. Prior to May 15 , there will be a cancellation fee of $50. MEDICAL RELEASE In case of an emergency, all efforts will be made to contact parents immediately. If this is impossible, the school will contact the nearest relative whose name has been submitted on the emergency form. It is the responsibility of the parent to make sure someone is available at all times to pick up your child in the event of an accident or illness. The camp will not administer prescription or non-prescription medication without written permission from a parent or guardian. Prescription medications should be given to the camp director by the child’s parent or guardian. MEDIA RELEASE A photographer will take pictures of Community Camps for next year’s brochure and promotional purposes. Children will not be identified. Parents who do not want their child’s photograph to be used for these purposes should contact the camp director in writing before the child’s first day of camp.
