For the Very Last Time Dear Friends, We are nearly halfway through the year. How time flies! Yes, time does seem to accelerate the older you get, so I’m saying it before anyone reminds me of that curious phenomenon. But have you ever noticed how people will say that they are getting older but rarely admit to being old! I think this is a healthy sign because it reminds us that although we do outwardly change we recognise that inside we don’t change very much, and if we do then hopefully it is only for the better. Perhaps in all of us there is more than a germ of hope in St. Paul’s statement ‘Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day’. St. Paul was not talking about growing old primarily, but about the inextinguishable flame of the resurrection life of Jesus burning within him that renewed him day by day. It was what kept him cheerful even when things didn’t go right for him. And as I write I’ve just heard that being cheerful – ‘looking on the bright side of life’ can according to new research lengthen our lives by up to seven and a half years. We have felt for a long time that being ‘young in heart’ is important, but implied in the apostle’s statement is the value of being ‘young in mind’. I’m sure we can all recall someone who is a refreshing inspiration because of the way they look at life despite their advanced years. Those that I’ve met seem to have something in common. They appear to sit light to material possessions and have an openness to discover new things. Now there’s a challenge. Yours sincerely, Ralph Lawrence Brackenfield are holding their final Well Dressing Festival on the weekend of Spring Bank Holiday 27th, 28th, & 29th May 2017. Peak Care raises Money for Hospice As it was a cold rainy morning in March, the assisted living residents at Peak Care were very pleased and surprised that so many people from Ashover turned up at their fundraising Coffee morning for Ashgate Hospice. There were refreshments of coffee and delicious home made cakes, a bric-a-brac stall and a raffle. The amount raised was £142 in just a couple of hours and we would like to thank all those who attended this event for such a worthy cause. Jan Slaughter, Activities Co-ordinator Children’s Easter Worship All the children and teachers from Wessington Primary School gathered in Christ Church on Friday7th. April to celebrate the Easter Message. There was standing room only for late-comers as families and friends joined in worship with the children, who conducted the service themselves. Readings, poems and songs unfolded the Easter Story and a great variety of Easter hats and bonnets added to the joy of the season. Children put the coppers they had collected at home for the Jars of Change appeal into the church jar. The hard work by children and Staff resulted in a beautifully presented act of worship which was greatly appreciated by all the congregation. Tree of Handley Life St Mark's church are creating a wall display called 'The tree of Handley life'. It is an ongoing project depicting the Clergy as wise Owls and the congregation and visitors as leaves on the tree. In amongst these will be larger leaves telling the Bible stories as they happen. It is light-hearted but hopefully it will also be a pause for thought.
