WOF RLD WONDER ELIGIBILITY GUIDELINES: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Grades All children entering 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade in the fall of 2017 are eligible for World of Wonder. The selection procedure is intended to be inclusive, not exclusive, and the guidelines have been established as an aid for parents and teachers in deciding if students should apply. In determining eligibility, WOW staff consider these questions: “Will this student benefit from the classes offered?” and “Is this student described by the following definition of gifted and talented children?” PROGRAM World of Wonder is a series of one week summer programs at Bradley University designed to provide a variety of learning options for gifted and talented students. It begins with a family orientation on Saturday, followed by classes Monday through Friday. This year, the orientation and classes will be held in Bradley Hall. Participants may choose to take one, two, or three classes, or they may spend the whole day with us by registering for our end-of-day recreation option. Recreation provides students with structured supervision after classes and allows families to pick them up after 5 pm. Students who spend the day bring their own lunches. WOW faculty is comprised of a talented group of individuals from area pre-K-12 public and private schools, as well as from the Bradley University teacher education faculty. WOW student aides are an enthusiastic group of Bradley University students who choose to work with the program by helping participants between classes, assisting in their classrooms, and providing recreational activities. HISTORY Since 1983, the Bradley University Institute for Gifted and Talented Youth and its predecessor, the Peoria County Foreign Language Immersion Program, has offered summer educational opportunities for Central Illinois youth. The Institute’s summer program, World of Wonder (WOW), features a broad array of one-week classes which enables first through eighth grade students to explore and expand their interests and abilities in a university environment. Now in its 34th year, World of Wonder remains a high quality, thriving program for area youth. Gifted and talented children are those children whose mental development is accelerated beyond the average or who have demonstrated a specific aptitude or talent. They have demonstrated exceptional ability in academic subjects, high level thought processes, divergent thinking, or creativity. Children who are gifted or talented may display some or all of the following traits: learn easily, show initiative, enjoy learning, work independently, offer unusual insights, develop many interests, communicate effectively, or solve problems creatively. ELIGIBILITY GUIDELINES: 4th – 8th Grades Students entering 4th-8th grade in the fall of 2017 must fulfill one of the following criteria (please register FIRST, then submit your eligibility documentation): • Enrollment in a gifted or talented program within the current academic year. • Achievement test score of one grade level above current grade level, according to national norms. • IQ score of 120 or above. • Exemplary classroom performance as indicated by the most recent report card and a recommendation from a teacher or principal. A student who does not meet any of the guidelines should submit an application form. We will review the application and determine if the student will benefit from participation. Home schoolers may submit an essay detailing why they would like to attend. SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships are available to assist with tuition for families who qualify for free or reduced price school meals. For a scholarship application, please call (309) 677-2374, or visit our website at bradley.edu/wow. Due to limited resources, we may not be able to grant a scholarship to every child. 2017 WOW.indd 1 1 1 2/28/2017 8:54:25 PM For students beginning 1st grade in Fall 2017 GRADE 1 SESSION 1 June 19 - 23 SESSION 2 July 31 - August 4 8:00 AM 1101 Number Ninjas 2101 Travel around the World 10:15 AM 1102 Fairytale Science 2102 Animal Adventures 1:30 PM 1103 Childhood through the Ages 2103 The Crayons Have Quit! 1101 Number Ninjas (Jen Bernitt) Calling all ninjas! Number Ninjas will be a fun week of math games using cards, dice, dominoes, and other manipulatives to conquer many mathematical skills. We’ll reinforce your math skills in addition, subtraction, number sense, place value, counting money, telling time, and maybe even the beginning concepts of multiplication. Ninja groups will be formed, and points will be awarded throughout the week to crown our new Number Ninja champs! 1102 Fairytale Science (Patty Lawless) Fairytales are amazing because anything is possible – curses, spells, and even talking animals reign in these worlds beyond our imagination. But are the most magical moments from some of our favorite stories actually possible? Join us as we look at these tales and other traditional literature to see how these fantastic stories have roots in science. We’ll explore a new story each day, take part in engaging activities and experiments, and see just how science actually is a part of our beloved fairy tales! 1103 Childhood through the Ages (Kara Girsch) Today, summer break is one of the most magical times of year for kids, but it wasn’t always that way! If you were the son or daughter of a caveman trying to find food, your main priority was to figure out how to not become a snack for a saber-toothed tiger. If you grew up in the 18th century, your childhood was spent “being seen and not heard.” In this class, we will discover how childhood has changed throughout the centuries, and you’ll walk away with a greater appreciation of how history has influenced your own childhood. 2101 Travel around the World (Julie Gianessi) Pack your bags and bring your passport, because each morning we will depart for an adventure around the world! Actually, you won’t need any luggage – just your imagination and sense of adventure as we explore a different country each day. Be prepared to have fun while we see the sights, make crafts, learn a few native phrases, and much more! 2102 Animal Adventures (Molly Damotte) Animals are all around us and in this class, we’re going to learn all about them. Throughout our week together, we’ll discover many amazing facts about animals all over the world. Where do they live? What do they eat? What do they do all day? You’ll learn all this and more during our exciting adventure of animal exploration! 2103 The Crayons Have Quit! (Christy Gardner) What if you opened up your box of crayons and found out that all of your favorite colors had quit? If you’ve read the bestselling phenomenon, The Day the Crayons Quit, you may have an idea how hard it is to be a crayon. Blue may not want to color only water anymore, and Orange and Yellow are fighting about being the proper color of the sun. This week we will explore what happens when crayons have their feelings hurt, feel overused or underappreciated, and decide to quit. 2 2017 WOW.indd 2 2/28/2017 8:54:25 PM GRADES TAKE 1, 2, OR ALL 3 CLASSES EACH SESSION or spend the whole day by registering for our end-of-day recreation option! 1201 First Responders: Community Heroes (Julie Gianessi) A first responder arrives and assists at the scene of an emergency such as an accident or natural disaster. During our class, we’ll get a chance to meet these community heroes in person when they visit our WOW classroom! You will get the chance to speak with the brave men and women, see their equipment, ask questions, and more! We will spend the week finding out what first responders do in an emergency. Who knows? Maybe you would like to be one when you grow up! 1202 I Have a Dream, I Have a Dream (Christy Gardner) Rapunzel dreamed of seeing the lights. Flynn Rider dreamed of having money. What is your dream? When you look into your future, what do you see? Do you want to be a teacher, a scientist, an artist? Do you want to hit a baseball, design amazing buildings, explore other countries? Big or small, all dreams are important. In this exciting class, we will investigate our dreams and determine how to make them our reality. 2-3 For students beginning 2nd or 3rd grade in Fall 2017 SESSION 1 June 19 - 23 SESSION 2 July 31 - August 4 8:00 AM 1201 First Responders: Community Heroes 2201 Technology Then and Now 10:15 AM 1202 I Have a Dream, I Have a Dream 2202 WOW Book Club 1:30 PM 1203 Full STEAM Ahead! 2203 Urban Legend Creatures 1203 Full STEAM Ahead! (Christine Hill) Get your brains ready to move full STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) ahead! In this class, you will complete an array of exciting building challenges related to these subjects. Be ready to think creatively, use your knowledge, and work with others as you complete technical challenges with a limited amount of materials! Be ready to build, be creative, and think outside the box! 2201 Technology Then and Now (Molly Damotte) Have you explored your grandparents’ attic and found some pretty interesting gadgets? If so, you know just how quickly technology is evolving! Today, we all want the best phone, tablet, or gaming system. But how did we get to this point? In this class we will journey through the history of technology. Our “time machine” will take us back to some outrageous inventions that will blow your mind! 2202 WOW Book Club (Shelby Spring) Reading is awesome. It’s like watching a movie in your head: it expands your vocabulary, it helps you become a better writer, and it transports you to places all over the world without leaving your home! In this class, you’ll join WOW’s Book Club, where we’ll read five short books from different genres to determine our favorite one of the week! This interactive class will include a variety of activities to help us discuss and analyze each book. You never know which genre will be your favorite! 2203 Urban Legend Creatures (Christine Hill) Does Bigfoot really exist? Is the Loch Ness Monster real? Would you like to learn more about the stories surrounding these supernatural legends? If so, put on your thinking cap, and be ready to investigate as we explore and analyze the evidence behind various urban legend creatures. The truth is out there! 3 2017 WOW.indd 3 2/28/2017 8:54:25 PM For students beginning 4th or 5th grade in Fall 2017 GRADES 4-5 1401 Spy Kids (Patty Lawless) Spying may be exciting and intriguing, but it’s never easy! Join us as we transform into spies for a week of mystery and creativity. You’ll have the opportunity to solve enigmas, create secret codes, and more! Get ready to learn all about what it takes to be a spy. Will you have what it takes to match fingerprints and crack the case? 1402 The Curse is Broken (Molly Myers) Last year, the Cubs won the World Series for the first time in 108 years! Did they finally break one of the so-called curses, or was it just their time? Our class will investigate how curses get broken in sports, how teams defy odds, and how math plays into winning and losing. We will also delve into superstitions and rituals athletes follow, study different sports stories throughout the years, and break down the mathematics behind them. In addition, we’ll design our own sports drills and keep track of the statistics involved! 1403 C’est la vie à Paris (Kara Girsch) Ooh là là! Parlez-vous français? In this class, we will explore the City of Light: the Louvre, the Cathédrale de Notre Dame, the arts, the music, and the food – everything that makes Paris one of the most visited cities on the planet. All week, we’ll be completely immersed in French culture and language, take an adventure on the Métro, and eat the best known of all French foods…no, not escargot - une crêpe! Be prepared for a week of French-tastic fun! Now imagine a world without running water, antibiotics, or refrigerators. Would a time traveler be able to improve ancient living conditions using only the resources available at that time? If you are a creative problem solver, join us in our exploration of the ancient world and how people of that time used only their limited resources and knowledge to solve complex problems in communication, science, math, technology, and engineering. 1405 A Chef ’s Life (Heidi Dowell) Question: what makes a chef great? Answer: a little science and a lot of fun! We will explore the science of cooking and add a pinch of math as we spend the week learning about some famous chefs and their paths to success! Be sure to bring your appetite, because we will also make some delicious treats as we discover more about these amazing chefs! 2401 HSI: Historical Scene Investigation (Shelby Spring) In this class, we will review case files from the Boston Massacre, Jamestown “Starving Time,” Bacon’s Rebellion, Elvis Meeting Nixon, and the Constitution Controversy. We’ll then put on our HSI (Historical Scene Investigation) caps to investigate each event, search for clues within the files, and reach conclusions to “solve” these mysteries! 2402 Tiny House in Geometrocity (Carolyn Sutton) Following the new trend, we will be designing our own tiny houses and building scale models. After our houses are constructed, we will need some place for them to live, so we will be designing our own Geometry city. Join us for an exciting week of geometry and building, and bring your math skills and your hard hat! 1406 Building Bridges (Chris Vergatos) How did engineers design the Murray Baker Bridge that crosses the Illinois River? In this class, we will look at the history of some bridges, the engineering necessary to construct them, the different designs, and even build our own structures! By the end of this class, you’ll be introduced to the basic engineering concepts that are necessary to build these modern wonders. Let’s get to buildin’! 4 2017 WOW.indd 4 2/28/2017 8:54:25 PM Grades 4-5 Continued 2403 What Did You Just Say? Debate, Speech, and Improv (Kara Girsch) To some people, fear of public speaking ranks higher than the fear of death, but it’s really not that scary at all! If you can speak well, you can rule the world! In this class, we will work on how to put speeches together effectively, how to argue and win, and how to deal with a sticky situation in which you have to think on your feet. We’ll approach these valuable skills in a lighthearted manner, giving you the tools you’ll need to be a great public speaker! 2404 Full STEAM Ahead – Part 2! (Christine Hill) 2406 We Didn’t Start the Fire: Where We’ve Been through Music (Kara Girsch) In 1989, Billy Joel released We Didn’t Start the Fire, a rock and roll song with political and historical lyrics. When asked how to best understand a time period, we often look at the music of that era. We will travel musically back in time (no Delorean required) to think critically about what each type of music is trying to say about our society. America is a nation rich in musical history, and one that we are going to immerse ourselves in this summer. Be ready to rock, roll, and even Charleston. WOW REGISTRATION DEADLINES Session 1- June 9 Session 2 - July 21 Get your brains ready to move full STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) ahead! In this class, you will complete an array of exciting building challenges related to these subjects. Be ready to think creatively, use your knowledge, and work with others as you complete technical challenges with a limited amount of materials! Be ready to build, be creative, and think outside the box! 2405 Native American Art (Chris Mangold) In this class, we will explore how arts and crafts are used by Native Americans. We will also discover how designs on clothing and household items have had spiritual or sacred aspects that connect the creator or user of the work to tribal beliefs about the world. You will also have the opportunity to create some of these works of art, and there may even be a surprise for everyone to enjoy! 5 2017 WOW.indd 5 2/28/2017 8:54:26 PM GRADES For students beginning 6th, 7th, or 8th grade in Fall 2017 6-8 SESSION 1 June 19 - 23 8:00 AM 1601 The Right Stuff 2601 It’s a Mystery 10:15 AM 1602 Mini UN at WOW 2602 Frustrated Fowl Functions 1:30 PM 1603 Art of Photography 2603 Video Game Basics 1601 The Right Stuff: From the Earth to the Moon (Evan Moore) The year was 1962. President John F. Kennedy, elected two years prior, boldly stated that the United States would reach the Moon before the end of the decade. Then the Soviet Union fearlessly jumped in. This “space race” launched thousands of futuristic representations of where we may explore in the years to come. We’ll spend the week learning about the true stories that provided the springboard to the dreams of the likes of Star Trek and Space Odyssey. America in the 1960s awaits your exploration! We chose to go the Moon. Will you? 1602 Mini UN at WOW (Julie Gianessi) The United Nations is an international organization of sovereign states created in the wake of World War II to provide an opportunity for the independent states of the world to discuss global issues which affect them both individually and collectively. The UN aims to seek solutions to issues, conflicts, and crises in a peaceful manner. Are you interested in becoming a future student leader and ready to tackle global issues with peers? Join us this week as we take a close look at how the United Nations functions, then we’ll create delegations and find solutions in our own Mini UN at WOW! SESSION 2 July 31 - August 4 1603 Art of Photography (Chris Mangold) It is nice to have fancy or expensive gear, but it is the eye (the skills and techniques) of the photographer that create that award-winning photo. Photoshop allows photographers to alter moments in time, but its use now leads to questions as to whether images are “real” or “interpretations.” In this class, we’ll look at works by outstanding photographers, learn different techniques that may be used when shooting an image, decide how to choose a subject, and determine the most important element of a photo. Students are asked to bring their own digital cameras (that they know how to use) with a memory device. 2601 It’s a Mystery (Kara Girsch) Mysteries have intrigued humankind since the dawn of time. In fact, the mystery novel is one of the most popular book genres largely because we are such curious beings. We want to know the who, what, when, where, and why of a story – especially one that keeps us on the edge of our seats. Throughout the week, we will study the genre, learn how it works, and discover why a good mystery can’t be put down. Come prepared to read fantastic nail-biters and even write your own! 2602 Frustrated Fowl Functions (Carolyn Sutton) Angry Birds: they’re a phenomenon, they’re addictive, and they’re angry…really, angry! But they’ll be happier when they see how math can help them! In this class we will discover some of the mathematics behind the Angry Birds game, investigate equations and mathematics of projectile motion, and use them to design our own Angry Birds game level. This class involves high school level mathematics and fun! 2603 Video Game Basics (Chris Vergatos) Playing video games is fun, but how can you create your own game? This class will investigate the fundamentals of video game design as well as the possibilities of your career path in the video game industry. You’ll get to design your own video games throughout the week and play the games created by your classmates. Get excited about exploring video games from a different perspective, because combining work and play has never been more fun! 6 2017 WOW.indd 6 2/28/2017 8:54:26 PM APPLICATION ONLINE REGISTRATION Please go to bradley.edu/wow The application below is only for mail and walk in registrants.
