(Issue 7) of Autumn Term 2015

Eaton House Belgravia Issue 7 23rd October 2015 The Headmistress
Dear Parents, I cannot believe that half term is upon us, we have had a fabulous first half of term. As many of you know we are very sadly saying goodbye to Miss Liz at the end of half term. The boys and staff will all miss her enormously. We wish her all the best in the future and no doubt she will be back to visit. We congratulate Miss Ana on her forthcoming marriage to William Robertson tomorrow in Dorset. She will have a mini honeymoon and be back next week after half term. For reasons of security, I would be grateful if boys who arrive early for private tuition or Mr Cooke’s Touch Typing classes could do so at 08.00 promptly. This is so that we can keep note of who is in the building. The Early Birds trial appears to be running well and we therefore intend to continue the facility after the half term holiday. Just a gentle reminder that for reasons of supervision, numbers are restricted and therefore we can only accept those boys who have been pre-‐registered. Doors will open once at 08.15 and thereafter remain closed until school opens at 08.30. In the occasional event of a boy required to be in school early, e.g. cloakroom duty, we would ask that he arrives at the same time as the Early Birds and informs the school office. Siblings of Duty boys can be accommodated in the Library but, again, this needs to be registered. Please note that this exception does not apply to boys with siblings having private tuition. In support of The Royal British Legion and Remembrance Day on Wednesday, 11th November, we will be selling poppies in the No 3 and No 5 entrance halls beginning on Monday 2nd November. We had a wonderful monitor prayer this morning from Nate Varga Von Kibed 3A. Please take a moment to read the prayer featured at the end of the Newsletter. Have a good week. Miss Annabel, Headmistress Weekly Diary. Monday 2nd – Friday 6th November

It has been incredibly busy but the boys have settled into Year 3 brilliantly and we are very proud of all that they have achieved so far in preparation for 8+. A half term revision pack has been sent home this evening. This is optional but we do recommend that you keep your son’s learning ticking over during the break. Rest, relaxation and fun are also very important so please make sure there is a balance. The spellings are gradually getting harder so please do consolidate these over the break if you have time. Have a really good week and we look forward to seeing the boys back on Monday 2nd November. Best Wishes, Miss Sarah, Yr3 Coordinator Y e a r T w o U p d a t e We made it to half term! Well done to the boys, they have worked incredibly hard up until the last day and are completely exhausted. Please ensure your son takes home his plimsolls and football boots as I know that some feet have grown over the past 6 weeks and shoes are too small. We have sent home the half term pack. Please ensure your son has a go at this over the holiday as there are lots of new concepts taught this term. In Maths we have done subtraction with borrowing from zero and time story sums, both of which are tricky. In grammar we have studied is/are and was/were in a sentence. They also looked at the homophone for/four. They wrote some brilliant stories about Halloween in Composition. In reasoning they learn about analogies and relationships between words. As a treat we organised ‘Perform’ Workshop to give them a drama lesson in the afternoon which was fantastic and all boys behaved beautifully. Thank you to all parents who provided decorations to make the classrooms look extra spooky. A special thanks to Mrs Van Loon who made us delicious gingerbread cookies and brought in orange and white icing for decorations which, as you can imagine, was the best Tuesday afternoon they have had in a while! We all had wonderful Halloween parties on Friday afternoon with all the amazing food you provided us with so THANK YOU! 2A have their assembly after half term so I hope the boys practise their lines and dance until they drop during their break. I hope you have a wonderfully relaxing break. Miss Helen Miss Helen, Y2 Coordinator Year One Update
Thank you to the parents who kindly decorated our classrooms. They looked fabulous and the boys’ spirits were definitely lifted! The Year 1 boys have all had a fantastic first half of term. They have settled into their routines well and have worked incredibly hard. We have sent home an optional Half Term homework pack. The key word here is optional. However, please remember that exams will take place the week beginning Monday 16th November and revision week is from Monday 9th November. Revision packs and information about the exams will be sent home during Revision Week. Trainers have been sent home to be washed. Please ensure that boys bring them back to school on Monday 2nd November in time for whole school Games. This week we have been learning: Formal Maths: To solve and set out addition and subtraction vertical sums (many found this hard. Please practice over half term using the specific formula found in the pack) Practical Maths: To revise place value and understand the value of a digit. Grammar: To understand when to use ‘a’ and ‘an’ before a common noun. Comprehension: To check that their comprehension answers have a capital letter, full stop and use correct spelling of the key words. Composition: To write the middle of their story describing the adventure and problem. Reasoning: To un-‐muddle words and sentences. I wish you all a very happy half term and I look forward to hearing all about their exciting adventures on Monday 2nd November. Miss Sophie, Yr 1 Coordinator Year KG Update
The Nativity play this year will, once again, be Whoops-‐a-‐Daisy Angel, which has been tweaked by us, following a hugely successful production two years ago! A paper version of the song words was sent home today as well as where to access the CDs in order to learn the words. Rehearsals will commence of Monday 2nd November at school and we all really appreciate your help in learning words. All of the songs will be learnt by all of the classes and all boys will have a least one line to say. Spoken lines will be sent home after half term, when the script has been finalised. Literacy lessons have been based upon the Emergency! book. In Maths, we have been looking at the U.K. coins and have started adding with Numicon, as well as learning to recognise the symbols + and =. In Reasoning, we have continued to pattern make using shapes and sizes. Optional half term homework has also been sent home this week. Have a lovely half term! Miss Clare, KG Coordinator Games
With half term looming it is hoped that your son, (particularly if he’s in Yr 2 or 3), has the opportunity of practising his throwing and catching levels, his basketball levels 1-‐6 and football levels 1-‐4 as only one boy in Yr 3 has achieved his level 3 certificate by kicking 10 consecutive balls on the roll over 10 metres with both his dominant and non -‐dominant foot. The standard is improving slowly as some boys are trying to practise as often as they can so they tell me! Congratulations to Timur Hursever and Wade Haskell (in the 1s) on achieving their level 3 throwing and catching certificates and Mies Wrobel, Andrey Serebryakov and Walter Preston (also in the 1s) on achieving their level 6 certificates! Congratulations to the boys below in Yr 3 and especially the Captain, Otto Monge, on their selection to the Conker team. The match will be taking place at Knightsbridge School on Monday, 2nd November. Mr Carothers and I hope they find time to practise their skills over half term! We’ve had a great six weeks in Science, so far. Year 1, 2 and 3 boys have been sent home today with OPTIONAL Half Term Science Homework. It is all quite fun and will be nice for the boys to demonstrate to parents what they have been learning about, this term. Please return it to the class teacher when you return from the break. Science Club had another fun week, this time looking at magnetic forces. A top tip for keeping the boys entertained and learning over the half term, is to take the boys to the Science Museum… It’s free! The Launchpad floor is by far the greatest part of the museum with lots of hands on science. I believe they also have something spooky planned for Halloween! Enjoy your break. Miss Michelle, Head of Science Music
Music Assembly On Thursday, 22 October 2015 we were entertained by three fantastic pianists. First to play was Nadim Cortas F2 playing a rhythmic and expressive rendition of “Indian Tom Tom.” He was followed by Max Covington F2 who played “Surrender” beautifully; making sure every note was perfectly placed. Our final pianist was Rudyard Haggist 3A who played “Halloween” with a lovely touch creating a “spooky” atmosphere. Finally we all sang a rousing version of our Halloween special, “All in the Middle of the Night!” Bravo to our soloists and to everyone for their delightful singing. Private Tuition Just a reminder that if you wish to cancel your son’s music lessons you will need to give notice to his private teacher by the end of the half term break otherwise you will incur a whole term fee. I hope you have a great half-‐term break! Miss Jayne, Head of Music Other Information

Let us pray, Dear Lord, On this day before we leave for our half term holidays, we ask you to protect us and keep us safe on our travels. Please help us to reflect on how lucky we are to live on a wonderful planet full of beautiful nature and amazing creatures big and small. Help us to protect them by recycling, reusing and reducing our waste as much as we can. Please save our natural habitats so we can all continue to enjoy the wonders of Earth during our holidays. We thank you also for all our teachers who work very hard to teach us everything we know. We thank you for our lovely families and friends and all the people in communities around the Earth who keep everything running smoothly. We hope everybody gets some rest during the half term break. Have a great holiday and safe journeys! Amen Nate Varga Von Kibed
