REGISTRATION:
Will be accepted ONLINE, www.somersny.com, (click on Parks & Rec., then under additional links click
on Pre & After School Programs, then scroll down under 3-12 Programs and click on the registration
link), beginning 6:00 a.m., Monday, March 21st and processed daily until all spaces are filled or Monday,
March 28th whichever comes first.
Please do not hesitate to register space is limited and programs fill up quick.

Yoga for Children
Grades 3-5

Participants will learn yoga postures and imagery to help develop a greater sense of body awareness, selfesteem and positive coping skills. Yoga is a natural way to exercise, relax, focus & strengthen the
body/mind/spirit connection.

Minecraft® Machine Marvels
Grades 3-5
Fee:*$195.00, Instructor: Staff of Computer Adventures, Time: 3:30-4:30 p.m., Location: SIS
Students will be creating contraptions with items such as pistons, pressure-plates, levels, buttons, trip
wire, lava, water, doors, dispenser, TNT and redstone. The teacher will provide guidelines on how to build
some simple machines. In addition to learning about action and reaction, transfer of energy, this course
will also showcase the students’ logical ability as well as creativity *Students can download their projects

Stop-Motion Animated Movie Making
Grades 3-5

Lights…Camera…Action! Students’ dreams of having their favorite LEGO® characters come to life
become a reality in our movie making class. Using stop-motion animation and digital post-production
editing, students produce brickfilms much like the ones viewed on YouTube. Students learn about
developing creative storytelling techniques, incorporating visual and audio special effects. This is a great
class to take with friends. Students can take the class as many times as they like. *Students can download

Language for Kids™
Grades 3-5

Students will experience the world in Spanish with the Little Language League’s interactive international
curriculum where they are immersed in the target language through role-play, games and imaginative
journeys to faraway lands. Spanish program is taught by native-speaking educator who immerses the
children in the target language with ShineImmersion™, proven proprietary international curriculum
which incorporates theater and the arts as well as sound educational practices. To reinforce learning, the
Little Language League brings the learning home with ShineImmersion™ workbooks, books and course

Cartooning
Grades 3-5

The art of cartooning will cover the basics of creating a comic book. Study will include developing
characters, backgrounds, perspective, story lines and color theory and a focus on fun. Students will use a
variety of mediums including pen and ink, watercolor and acrylic paint.

Amazing Race
Grades 3-5

It is thanks to advances in technology that we are able to explore so much of the world. In this class,
students will create effective bridge designs, analyze different ways to propel model cars, and explore
marine propulsion and design. As students travel around the world, they will learn about the effects of
aerodynamics and the forces of lift, thrust, gravity and drag by building their own rockets.

Grow With Me!
Grades 3-5
Fee: $65.00, Instructor: Caroline Fanelli (Horticultural Therapist/Master Gardener),
Time: 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m., Location: SIS
Let me share the joys of gardening with you! This hands-on program will introduce you to greenhouse
and outdoor gardening. Learn about the tools of the trade, gardening safety, planting media, seed
starting, plant propagation, transplanting, and maintenance. In addition, we will do a variety of fun
projects using the gifts from nature, like making birdseed feeders, herbal tea bags, and dream
pillows. Join us to beautify the Somers Intermediate School courtyard and utilize the school’s greenhouse
to its’ fullest potential. Supplies included.

Young Master Artists

Drawing and Children’s Book Illustration
Grades 3-5
Fee: $85.00, Instructor: Joseph Tomasini, Time: 3:30-4:30 p.m., Location: SIS
This class will focus on basic drawing skills which will include, anatomy, composition, object structure and
color theory which will lead to creating a children’s illustrated book. The final project will involve simple
story telling, dialogue, cover and character design, background and mood. Joe Tomasini is a designer and
illustrator and is in the final stages of an illustrated children’s novel and a comic series.

Intramurals
Grades 3-5
Fee: $65.00, Instructor: John Badini, Time: 3:25-4:00 p.m. Location: SIS Gym
Children will enjoy participating in fun intramural school games. These games are played throughout the
year in the Physical Education Program at SIS. The games played include dodgeball, capture the flag,
boxball, among others. The focus is on individual skill, teamwork, conditioning, and a positive game
atmosphere.

Horseback Riding I by Zephyr Farms
Grades 2-8
Fee: *$320.00, Instructor: Staff of Zephyr Farm, Time: 4:00-5:00 p.m.
Location: Zephyr Farms 219 Watermelon Hill Rd. Mahopac
This class is for students who have had little or no horseback riding instruction. During the 8-week
course, participants will be introduced to the sport in a fun and safe environment. Classes are run in a
lighted, indoor arena. Each class will consist of a 40 minute riding lesson that will teach the basics in
balance, position, control and safety and a 20 minute discussion and/or demonstration. There will be no
more than 5 students per class. Each class will be led by an instructor and several aides. This class will
run with 2- 5 students. There will be one make-up lesson provided TBD. Students must wear long pants
and heeled shoes/boots. Helmets are available for loan.

Location: Zephyr Farms 219 Watermelon Hill Rd. Mahopac
This class is for students who are able to walk, trot and canter on their own. During the 8-week course,
participants will continue to develop their skills. Classes are run in a lighted, indoor arena. Each class will
consist of a 40 minute riding lesson that will review and continue to practice correct diagonals and leads,
and a 20 minute discussion and/or demonstration. There will be no more than 5 students per class. Each
class will be led by an instructor and several aides. This class will run with 2- 5 students. There will be
one make-up lesson provided on TBD. Students must wear long pants and heeled shoes/boots. Helmets
are available for loan.
