Each year, the Debbie-Rand
Memorial League honors one of its
most distinguished members with
its Volunteer of the Year Award. This
prestigious accolade is given to an
individual who goes beyond the
uncompromising standards exhibited
by all our D-RMSL volunteers.
The Volunteer of the Year is selected
by the D-RMSL Board of Trustees
and the Volunteer of the Month
Committee which is announced at
our annual Volunteer Appreciation
Luncheon.
We congratulate Mildred Strom on
being selected as our 2013 Volunteer
of the Year. A most deserving
honoree, Mildred has given almost
7,500 hours of service to the League
after joining it in 1999. She has
worked in the Volunteer Office
since 2002 and recently completed
a nine-year term as Membership
Chairperson. Mildred has served
on our D-RMSL Board of Trustees
as a member of
the Nominating
Committee and
the Lobby Sales
Committee. She
is also an active
member of the
Caring Hearts
Auxiliary at Florida
Mildred Strom
Atlantic University’s
Louis and Anne
Green Memory and Wellness Center.
After retiring from a 44-year career
in the broadcast advertising industry,
Mildred and her late husband, Nat,
moved from New York to Boynton
Beach in 1989. She currently resides
in Delray Beach. Mildred has one
step-daughter, two grandchildren
and five great-grand children.
We are very proud of you Mildred,
and thank you for your commitment
to the League, and the patients and
families we serve.

Evie became a Debbie-Rand
volunteer in 1998 shortly after
she and her late husband,
Richard, moved from Long
Island, New York to Boca
Raton. Over the last 16
EVIE ZIMMERMAN
years she has volunteered in
many areas of the Hospital
including Volunteer Services, the Gift Shop,
Medical ICU and the Nursery. She is currently
working in the Auxiliary Office on Mondays
and at the Visitors Pass desk on Tuesdays.
Evie has earned over 16,000 hours of service.
She serves on the D-RMSL Board of Trustees,
the Ways and Means Committee and the TAV
Scholarship Committee. Evie has represented
D-RMSL as Volunteer of the Year at both the
Junior League Volunteer of the Year Awards
and the Soroptimist award. She also serves on
the Board of Directors of the Louis and Anne
Green Memory and Wellness Center at FAU,
the Master Board of Directors of her community
and is president of her village.
Volunteers and employees describe Evie as
kind, caring and willing to take on any task for
D-RMSL and Boca Regional. Thank you, Evie,
for your years of dedicated service.

NOMINEES
“I wanted to let you know how Ernest, a D-RMSL volunteer, was so kind
and caring to my husband with such excellent relations and helpfulness.
You are very lucky to have him as a volunteer. We need more young
people like him.
Sherry Thomas
Do you know of or have you witnessed a volunteer going above and
beyond to help a patient? Or maybe someone is simply deserving of
recognition for displaying an exceptional level of volunteerism? If so,
let us know and we will feature them in an upcoming issue.

SERVING HEALTH INSURANCE NEEDS OF ELDERS
Laura Myers
Harold Wolkoff has been a D-RMSL
volunteer since 1990. He started the
SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs
of Elderly) Program in early 2000 and has
since given over 3,800 hours of service.
As we are all aware, understanding Medicare, supplemental health
insurance, long-term care and prescription coverage is a daunting task
for even the most well informed. And if you are about to turn 65, it’s
even more important for you to have a firm grasp of the options and
choices available.
Edmund Nasralla
Currently on the
Board, running for
a second term
That’s why we urge you to take advantage of the SHINE Program.
Harold provides consultations Monday and Wednesdays in the
Education Center from October to June. Please contact him at
561.955.4418 or 561.955.4419 during those days. Consultations are
by appointment only. Family members and caregivers are welcome.

Safety Matters: Volunteer Trivia
D-RMSL is committed to ensuring our volunteers
have the knowledge needed to keep themselves
and our patients safe. As part of this commitment,
we will provide a monthly safety question in this
newsletter. These questions represent what a
volunteer may be asked by The Joint Commission
surveyor during a site visit.
Congratulations to Aaron “Ron” Schuman who
correctly answered, “If you are transporting a
patient and an emergency occurs while you are
inside the elevator, what should you do?” The
answer: stop the elevator at the nearest unit and
immediately call for employee assistance. See
Aimee Yahn-Carmichael for your prize.
561.955.4100
This month’s trivia is about fire safety. The first 2-3
minutes of a fire are critical. The R.A.C.E. formula
will help you to respond effectively. What does
R.A.C.E. stand for? The first person to email Aimee
at [email protected], will win a pair of
Regal VIP Movie Tickets. Best of luck!
Stop by the Debbie-Rand Thrift Shoppe for
all the sales and take advantage of great deals.
