MARCH 2017
Greetings Spartan Families,
If it is March it means that it is Tournament Season. As I write this at the end of February
our Girls Hockey, Boys Swim and Dive, Girls Basketball, and Boys Basketball are all preparing for their respective Region and State Tournaments. This is an exciting time not only
for our participants but for our student body as well as they get a chance to support their
classmates and show their Spartan Pride. Already this winter our Dance team has placed
at their state meet, we have had 10 wrestlers compete in the state wrestling tournament
and our Debate team was crowned 2017 State Champs!!! As the calendar marches we
also look to the spring activities to get rolling. Information on these activities and their start
dates can be found on page 4. If any student-athletes have ambitions of competing at the
college level please connect with your counselor about creating an NCAA and/or NAIA eligibility center account. This can and should be done as early as a student’s sophomore
year. More information can be found at these links.
 NCAA: https://web3.ncaa.org/ecwr3/
 NAIA: http://www.playnaia.org/
Beyond the athletic fields, our Speech program has just begun their season and our Junior
Classical League (Latin Club) is preparing to host the State Conference here at Fargo
North in April. Also, on the evening of March 31st our students will put on the only high
school student led Relay 4 Life event in the state of North Dakota. Last year this event
raised around $10,000 for the American Cancer Society. Also, mark your calendars now as
the FNH Theater Department’s production of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is set
to be on stage May 11th – May 14th. Tickets go on sale April 26th, and you will not want to
miss this show.
Fargo North has consistently ranked very highly in the percentage of students who participate in activities. We take great pride in that fact and believe whole-heartedly that cocurricular activities add tremendous value and help create a well-rounded high school experience. If your student is not involved yet I would urge you to check out our activity booklet which is now available to peruse online: http://www.fargo.k12.nd.us/cms/lib010/

ND Presidential Scholar Candidates
Congratulations to Martin Altenburg, David Dowdell, and Tanner Kirkpatrick who are Presidential Scholar candidates,
one of the most prestigious honors for a high school student.
Each year, the U.S. Department of Education chooses up to 161 Presidential Scholars candidates from the nation’s
high school seniors from each of the 50 states. Most Presidential Scholar candidates are chosen because of their exceptional scores on the ACT or SAT college entrance exam. Some are picked because of promise they have demonstrated in technical education or the arts. Others are nominated by chief state school officers. Semi-finalists will be
named in April and finalists in May. One male and one female will be selected from each state.

Registration will occur at school. Students do not need to

high school transcript. North High recommends college
bound students to take the ACT test and employment
bound students to take the WorkKeys. If a student is
absent the ACT Make-Up will be Wednesday, April 19.
Counselors or principals are available to answer questions about testing. You may call the counseling center at

North Dakota Scholars
Program
The North Dakota Scholars Program, a merit-based scholarship, provides approximately 40 to 45 new freshmen
scholarships to North Dakota's best and brightest high
school graduates to encourage them to remain in North
Dakota for college. The North Dakota Scholars Scholarship is a full tuition scholarship for students attending
North Dakota's public and tribal colleges and a tuition
scholarship equal to NDSU/UND's tuition for students attending North Dakota's private institutions.

Amount: The amount of the scholarship is equal to
the tuition rate charged at the scholar's institution, not
to exceed the highest regular resident undergraduate
tuition rate in the North Dakota University System.
Scholars may receive the award for nor more than
eight semesters or twelve quarters of full-time undergraduate study, or until the attainment of a baccalaureate degree, whichever occurs first. Stipends may be
awarded in an amount not to exceed two thousand
dollars annually. Scholarships and stipends, if awarded, will be sent directly to the institution the student is
attending.

Who is eligible for consideration: High school students who score at or above the ninety-fifth percentile
among those who took the ACT prior to July 1st in the
calendar year preceding the individual's enrollment in
college will be considered for the award. Students will
be awarded in descending rank order until available
funds are expended or until the pool of applicants has
been exhausted.

How to apply: Take the ACT Assessment prior to
July 1 in the calendar year preceding the student's fulltime enrollment in college. No separate application is
required.

WorkKeys Test Could Lead to
State Scholarship Funds
If your senior is attempting to earn the ND Career and
Technical Education (NDCTE) scholarship but did not
score a 24 or higher on the ACT exam, the WorkKeys test
assessing Mathematics, Locating Information, and Reading for Information, is another option to fulfill the exam
requirement. Students who meet all other NDCTE scholarship requirements are encouraged to take the WorkKeys assessment.
Seniors may register with Mandy Orth Gibney in the counseling center to take or retake the ACT WorkKeys test
(internet version) at North High. Cost to students is $8.00
per test. If students are hoping to qualify for the ND Career and Technical Scholarship, they will need to achieve
a score of at least 5 on each of the following WorkKeys
tests: Reading for Information, Locating Information, and
Applied Mathematics by the deadline of March 31, 2017.
The testing schedule is available on the counseling center
website. Students will also need to meet additional requirements in order to qualify for this scholarship. Students should see their counselor with any questions.
North Dakota
Scholarship Program
Junior students who get top scores on standardized
tests, and their parents, should know about the North
Dakota Scholars Program. This state funded scholarship
provides full tuition and is renewable for four years of college if the recipient maintains a 3.5 GPA in college. To
qualify for the money, students must score in the top 5%
th
of ND students on an ACT exam during their 11 grade
year of high school.
All juniors will be required to take an ACT exam this year
in March (provided at North and paid for by Fargo Public
Schools); however, some students might wish to register
for a test as early as February or take a third exam in
April or June, so they have more testing opportunities to
achieve a top 5% score. The North Dakota Scholars Program will award 40-45 awards in 2016, and students
must attend a ND university (public or private) to be eligible to receive the money.
The state of ND has access to student scores, so there is
not an application process for this scholarship, except
earning a high test score during grade 11. The state contacts high scoring students about the scholarship during
the fall of their senior year. ACT registration information
is available in the counseling office. Students or parents
who want more information about this scholarship should
contact a school counselor (701-446-2412) or Career
Resource Specialist Mrs. Orth Gibney (701-446-2413).

Fargo Public School District Election – March 7, 2017
Fargo Public Schools (FPS) will hold an election for approval of a specified mill levy on Tuesday, March
7, 2017. The approval would grant Fargo Public Schools the authority to maintain its current standard
of effort at 127.00 mills.
Fargo citizens who live in the Fargo School District are eligible to vote in this election. The March 7,
2017 election ballot question is:
The current Fargo Public School District’s general fund levy is 127.00 mills. The current statutory general fund
limitation is seventy mills on the dollar of the taxable valuation of the school district.
Shall Fargo Public Schools District No. 1 have a specified general fund mill levy of 127.00 mills effective December 31, 2017?
A “YES” vote will allow Fargo Public Schools to receive tax dollars based on the true assessed value of individual property. This will allow FPS to continue to provide quality educational opportunities for all students in the district.
A “NO” vote will freeze Fargo Public Schools at the actual property tax dollars collected in the 2015-16 fiscal year,
which means the district would no longer receive additional general fund tax dollars based on the true assessed value of
individual property as the city grows or property values change.
The vote on March 7 will be by precinct. Citizens who live in the Fargo School District will cast their vote at their usual
polling location. Election Day voting will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Visit www.fargo.k12.nd.us/vote2017 for
more information.
