NASP_Lite Tournament Instructions 8/2/14
How this process works:
This process is designed to allow someone to score NASP style tournaments for up to 300 archers. To
utilize this software, you will need a computer (this has not been tested on Apple products) and an
Apperson Advantage/Datalink 1200 scanner. Both the computer and scanner will need to have specific
software installed for the process to work correctly. This needs to be done well in advance of
tournament day.
Step 1: First, let’s set up the software to allow the computer to communicate with the scanner. (do not
connect your scanner to the computer until AFTER you install this software). This software is from
DataLink. This will only need to be done one time on the computer. To get the software, go to
http://datalinkupdate.com/updates/NASP/Win32/ . On this page, you will find instructions about how to
install this software. This software is supported by Apperson Education Products. Customer support for

Step 2: Once this software is installed, it is a great time to update the software (Firmware) on your
scanner. To do this, simply connect your scanner to your computer using the usb cable provided.

Now, the computer and scanner should be able to communicate.
Step 3: The next step is to download the software that you will need for scoring. To get this software, go
to http://www.nasptournaments.org/ClientSoftware/NASPClientLite.aspx There, you will find 2
download links. You should download both to a location on your computer where you can find them
later. Your desktop is an excellent place to keep these files. The downloads are NASP_Lite.accdb (the
access database for processing the scores), and INSTRUCTIONS_NASP_Lite.doc (the instructions for how
to conduct your tournament).
Step 4: The scoring program software requires Microsoft Access 2010 (or 2007) to be installed on the
computer to allow the software to work properly. Microsoft Office Professional (2010 and 2007)
includes MS Access. It can be purchased several places online for around $100.
Step 5: This software was developed and owned by nasptournaments.org. If you have questions, you
can submit them to [email protected]. These questions will be answered as time permits.
There is NO service level support guaranteed for this software.
Now you should have the software you need to run your tournament.
For your tournament, you will need to create a folder named “ScoreCards” (preferably on your
desktop). The scorecard folder is where the scoring files are saved when they are exported from the
datalink software. The only things allowed to be stored in the ScoreCards folder are the scorecard files.
Before the tournament, you will need to open the NASP_Lite.accdb program. You will need to add the
teams that will be competing and then the archers that will be competing. You can also print labels and
rosters once all archers are added.
Please make sure you put the ink cartridge in the scanner. That will allow the scanner to print the shooter
number on the card and it can be verified for accuracy.
Tournament Day Instructions
(This is for the tournament day, after the scanner has been successfully connected to the laptop)
This process is repeated for everyflight.
During the flight……. Have someone count the number of archers shooting in the flight.
At the conclusion of the flight.
1 Collect the scorecards
2 Count the scorecards (if the count does not match the expected number, find the missing card(s))
3 “Launch” datalink (start, programs, Apperson education products, nasp, nasp)
4 make sure the scanner is connected (green dot in lower left corner, message “scanner
connected”)
5 The scanner display should say “data collection mode”
6 Scan your first card, the laptop should now display ID number (shooter number), total score, ten
count and Q1,Q2….. (each arrow score)
7 If the laptop does not display this information, close datalink (do not save anything) and start over
in step 3
8 Scan all of the cards (correct any card errors and write on the back of the card what was done to
correct the problem… ex blank row 4,3 bubbled zero or double bubble, 3,2 erased 10)
9 After the cards are scanned, make sure the processed count on the scanner display and the row
count on the laptop match the total number of cards expected (from step 2)
10 If the numbers do not match and if the problem cannot be found/corrected, close datalink, do not
save anything and start over in step 3
11 If everything is okay, click export.
12 Save the file in your ScoreCards folder and name it based on the flight number (ex. Flight1.csv)
then click save, click ok
13 Close the datalink program. This is very important to allow datalink to reset.
14 Check every card to make sure the shooter number printed by the scanner matches the shooter
number on the label. If it is not correct, open the exported file (in the scorecards folder) and delete
the “bad” record from the file and save and close the updated file. Make sure you delete the
correct record. Then fix the scorecard and repeat steps 3 – 13 for the bad card(s) only. For
step 12, make sure you name the file something different than the first file (maybe Flight1B.csv)
15 Open the MS access database (NASP_Lite.accdb).
16 Make sure the scorecard folder is named correctly on the screen. Make sure the scorecard folder
only has .csv files in it that contain the scorecard data. Click on the “Process Scores” button
17 If any errors are displayed, correct the errors in the registration file and/or the scorecard file(s),
close the access database and start again in step 14
18 If no errors are displayed, the reports are displayed and everything is good. Print what you need
19 Close the access database.
20 Sort the cards by team (if possible).
21 Let the coaches review the report, make sure they got scores for all archers they had compete (if
not, they may have a misbubbled card or lost card, find and correct)
