The Federal Reserve chose to put him on the $20 bill in 1928 C is for Childhood • Andrew Jackson was born in Waxhaw, the area between where North and South Carolina are now. His mother, Elizabeth Hutchinson Jackson raised him by her self when Andrew Jackson’s dad, also named Andrew died weeks before he was born in a logging accident. Elizabeth Hutchinson died of cholera when he was fourteen years old. He lost both is brothers in the war and was raised by his two uncles. While growing up he trained to be a lawyer and later was a lawyer. D is for Death • Andrew Jackson died of tuberculosis and heart failure on June 8, 1845. Andrew Jackson died at age 78. All of his family was supporting him during his death. E is for Election • In the Election of 1824 Andrew Jackson lost the election to John Quincy Adams back when the house of representatives decided the final vote. Andrew got 99 electoral votes. He ran again in 1828 and got 178 electoral votes and was elected president. He ran for another term and got 219 Electoral votes and beat Henry Clay, John Floyd, and William Wirt. • (1828-1837) F is for first lady • Andrew Jackson’s first lady was Rachael Jackson. She served as Andrew Jackson’s Secretary. She died on December 19, 1836 of a heart attack. They adopted a son who was named Andrew. G is for General • Andrew Jackson was a General in the war of 1812. Andrew Jackson did not hesitate to make 2500 troops to his command in Tennessee. General Wilkinson was his the wary of Jackson’s war-fever who commanded the troops H is for House • The Hermitage is a historical landmark also known as the Andrew Jackson house. This house is where Andrew Jackson grew up as a child in Nashville Tennessee. You can even see the original log house that he and his wife moved to. I is for Indian Removal Act • Andrew Jackson propose a new law called the Indian removal law. It gave the president power to negotiate removal treaties with Indian tribes living east of the Mississippi. The Indians were forced to give up their land and leave. J is for Jackass • Andrew Jackson’s non supporters called him a jackass as an insult. Jackson took this comment in a positive way. Jackson made the Donkey the symbol for the Democrates. K is for Kitchen Cabinet • Andrew Jackson was criticized for hiring his closest friends and his supporters in the position of the United States cabinet. Jackson’s political opponents used the term Kitchen Cabinet to describe this. L is for Louisiana • Louisiana is where the battle of New Orleans took place. Andrew Jackson, the general of the Battle of New Orleans was loved and honored there after victory of the battle, despite being very badly outnumbered by the British troops. M is for Monument • In front of the White House lays Lafayette Park were the Andrew Jackson monument sculpture is portrayed. This statue represents how Major General, Andrew Jackson appeared while reviewing his troops during the battle of New Orleans. N is for Nickname • Andrew Jackson was known as Old Hickory. He got this nickname for his toughness and his aggressive personality. Jackson got this nickname around the time period of the Battle of New Orleans. O is for Oath • Andrew Jackson’s was elected twice. Both oaths were administrated by John Marshall, Chief Justice. His first oath was March 4, 1829 in East Portico, U.S. Capitol . His second oath was on March 4, 1833 in House Chamber, U.S. Capitol. P is for parrot • Andrew Jackson owned a pet Parrot who was named Poll. At Andrew Jackson’s funeral Poll the Parrot had to be removed because he was screaming curse words. Q is for Quote • One of Andrew Jackson’s most famous quotes is "Any man worth his salt will stick up for what he believes right, but it takes a slightly better man to acknowledge instantly and without reservation that he is in error." R is for Rachael’s honor • After Charles Dickinson insulted Andrew Jackson’s wife’s honor Andrew Jackson had a gun duel with him. Charles shot Andrew twice nearly missing his heart. Jackson shot once and Dickinson had died. Andrew Jackson still spent the rest of his life with the two bullets in him. S is for Slavery • Jackson’s Viewed slavery as not a bad thing. Andrew Jackson was a slave owner himself, He started his presidency with 9 slaves and had as much as 44 slaves by 1820, later he held about 150 slaves. T is for Trail of Tears • Once Jackson force the Indians to give up their land, they began migrating to our present day Oklahoma. The journey was called the Trail of Tears due to the disease, hunger, and exhaustion the Cherokees faced. Over 4,000 of the Cherokees died. U is for Use of Veto • Andrew Jackson is known for vetoing a lot of bills. He did this because he wanted to expand the power of the Executive branch and control part of Legislative branch. He even vetoed the second national bank of the United States because he thought it fraudulent and corrupt. V is for Vice Presidents • Andrew Jackson had two vice presidents because he served two terms. In his first term his John C. Calhoun was his Vice President 1829-1833. In his second term Martin Van Buren was his Vice President 1833-1837 W is for Wife Scandal • One thing that threatened Andrew Jackson’s Campaign was his wife and her love life. Rachael Jackson was married before and claimed to be divorced while dating Andrew Jackson in 1788. What did not add up to this is that her ex-husband did not file for divorce until 1792, two years after Andrew and Rachael were married. X is for eXpanded voting debate • During the Election of 1828 there was major arguments and discussion of who was able to vote. Andrew Jackson believed that only white man’s with land had the right to vote, not minorities or women. Y is for Years in office • Andrew Jackson was President for 8 years. He served two terms.
