Connection THE LIBR ARY JULY 2003 A NEWSLETTER OF THE TOMPKINS COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY, THE TOMPKINS COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION, AND THE FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY THE WORLD’S BEST BOOK SALE Foundation Launches First Edition Society at May Luncheon Once again the Friends of the Library organized a most successful Spring book sale. For more information and Friends articles see pages 4 and 5. o Alice Rivoire and fellow guests Eduardo Valdez talks to daughter Lillian before going in to lunch VOLUME VI, ISSUE 3 n May 16, more than 200 people attended The Inside Story Luncheon at the Holiday Inn. Designed to spread the word in the community about the library’s work, the gathering was a chance for those familiar and not so familiar with the library to come together to learn more, and to consider making a financial investment. The event marked the launch of the First Edition Society, a group of library supporters who have pledged $1,000 or more a year for the next five years. The Society is off to a great start with fifteen charter members. Spurred by a challenge grant from the Park Foundation, First Edition Society members and other guests have contributed $165,945 in gifts and pledges of long-term support. Charter membership in the First Edition Society is available until the end of 2003. Lillian Valdez and her father Eduardo (pictured, left) were featured speakers at the luncheon. Eduardo spoke of how libraries served as refuge and source for exploration during his formative years in Mexico. He continues the tradition of librarygoing with three-year-old daughter Lillian by visiting almost every Wednesday. Lillian is a faithful attendee of Toddler Storytime, sitting right up front so she doesn’t miss a word. Dad and daughter look forward each week to their special time at the library. 1 F RO M T H E D I R E C TO R A librarian on the road a fter 25 days, 16 states and 6,200 driving miles, I can report that America is indeed beautiful and spacious, our mountains are purple and that the grain in Kansas does appear to be amber. My husband and I took a road trip to the Circus Museum in Baraboo, Wisconsin; the Badlands of South Dakota; Mount Rushmore; Yellowstone; the Grand Tetons; Salt Lake City; Abilene, Kansas; Hannibal, Missouri; Springfield, Illinois and Cleveland, Ohio. As information junkies, we had to work hard to keep the number of guidebooks and recreational reading to a minimum. We long for the day when cars come complete with on-board Internet access, so our curiosity and need for information can be immediately satisfied through the touch of a keyboard. We even brought our laptop computer with us, loaded with the CD ROM version of the Encyclopedia Britannica, but we rarely referred to it—primarily because what we needed to know (where’s a good restaurant, what’s happening in Sioux Falls tonight) couldn’t be answered with an encyclopedia. We used American Maps’s 2003 Road Atlas constantly—I loved the Large Print edition! The 6th edition of the Rough Guide to the USA was the best one volume source of information about cities and sights, sometimes irreverent, but always detailed and accurate. Two other books which came in handy (both purchased at the Friends booksale) were National Geographic’s Scenic Highways and Byways, and Crossing America, A guide to the Interstates. Having just finished The DaVinci Code before we left, I was hooked on Dan Brown, and read two of his other books, Angels and Demons and Digital Fortress within the first three travel days. But the best books were those we collected along the way. I read On the Rez by Ian Frasier during the days when we were on Indian reservations in South Dakota and saw the Crazy Horse Monument. Diane Smith’s Letters from Yellowstone was the perfect book to read while sitting in the Old Faithful Inn. Every historic site comes with a bookstore. At the presidential sites of Truman, Roosevelt, Eisenhower and Lincoln, along the Lewis and Clark Trail, the Oregon Trail and the Mormon Trail, we were overwhelmed with the opportunities to read more about it. While we returned with more books than we can possibly read, we know that if we need to know more, our public library will have what we need. Janet Steiner Tompkins County Public Librar y marched with the Friends of the Library in the Ithaca Festival Parade May 29.The Friends wore wacky book titles such as, Pretend Your Nose is a Crayon and other Strategies for Staying Younger Longer, and Spam: a Biography (yes, these are real book titles). TCPL depicted a “panorama” of our services and programs. The three areas we highlighted were: • TCPL’s participation in the community-wide read of Antigone (check our website for more about this) • Summer Reading Program for kids — Picture This, Imagine That — Read! • Library Lovers:Volunteers, Donors, and Friends of the Library We would like to thank everyone who volunteered to march with us or who helped us design costumes and props. A special thanks to Ann Rhodin for her work and skill in creating our ‘Antigone’ attire. 2 TOMPKINS COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES Gar y Woloszyn President Irene W. THE LIBRARY CONNECTION New Health Information Program Links for Healthy Living to Unlock Trove of Online Knowledge t hanks to a grant from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, TCPL will debut Links for Healthy Living: Promoting Electronic Health Information Resources in Tompkins County this fall. A project of the library’s Health Information Center, Links for Healthy Living will give people tools to manage their health and well being by training them in how to find reliable, up-to-date information online. Whether looking for strategies to get and stay healthy or ways to manage chronic illnesses, people can find the knowledge they need right at their fingertips. Workshops to be held in September and October will teach participants where to find the most credible electronic consumer health information and how to make sense of the sea of resources available online. Learners will learn how to find and use electronic resources, links to local health and human services, and databases accessible via the Tompkins County Public Library website (including National Library of Medicine databases MEDLINEplus and PubMed). Sessions will be held at TCPL and the community library centers in Danby, Caroline and Lansing, with a special session for teens at Greater Ithaca Activities Center. The project is but one of the programs and services of the Health Information Center. The Center was founded VOLUNTEER PROFILE Jai Gopal K. Khalsa began volunteering at the library in February 2003 in the Circulation Department. Jai continues to come once a week to help empty the book return bins and when that is caught up she sorts and shelves videos and DVDs. In addition, Jai will be working as a volunteer for the first time in the Youth Services Summer Reading Program to help register children. Whenever you see Jai working in the library she is always enthusiastic, full of energy and very efficient. Jai states she loves books and libraries and is considering returning to school to get a Master’s Degree in Library Science. What keeps Jai coming back is finding new treasures to read that she might not see otherwise and meeting new people. Jai has also volunteered for the Friends of the Library since 1999 and gave 110 hours of her time last year. Jai started as a rough sorter and quickly took on more responsibilities. Jai really enjoys being with other people who are interested in books and being able to support the library. Jai feels that volunteering for both the Friends and the library allows her to have the best experience. Jai is passionate about community service and has a staff position at Loaves and Fishes. Jai returned to Ithaca 4 years ago and is a definite asset to this community. The library is very grateful for all that she does and the joy she brings to her work. VOLUME VI, ISSUE 3 in response to the growing desire among local residents to take a more active role in their well being. While this need continues (and will expand even more in the coming years as the population ages), the Center is presently underfunded. Supported by private funds raised during The Campaign for the New Library in 2001 and 2002, the Center must now operate on a project basis, with limited staffing. Despite funding constraints, TCPL remains committed to meeting the community’s health information needs. We continue to seek partnerships, grants and private support to serve the community. Links for Healthy Living has been funded in whole or in part with Federal funds from the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, under Contract No. N01-LM-3521. There were 247 people in line when the doors opened! It was a huge success with 991 visits in 4 hours and 1,706 bags of books sold. There were crowds of people in every section having fun seeing how many books they could get in a bag. The paperback Romance aisle was packed with eager buyers getting their summer reading. A couple who rebind books for hotel deco- President’s Perspective Thanks to the superb efforts of our book sale coordinator, Regina Lennox, her three excellent assistants, and our hard-working volunteers, this year’s Spring book sale was the most successful yet! Since we began sorting last November through the end of this sale, 183 volunteers worked more the 5,800 hours. We had over 144,000 books (up 17% from last Frances Fawcett spring) and rainy weather (always a benefit to us unless it’s a torrent), resulting in a 30% increase in sale income. Our new format of splitting the sale between two consecutive weekends also increased attendance, as did the excellent pre-sale publicity. Total attendance equalled 8,899 visits. The bag sale on the last day was a great success, with 247 eager people lined up before the doors opened. Close to 1000 people bought 1706 bags of books at $1 apiece before the evening was over. The record number of books stuffed in one Wegman’s bag was reported to be 60! After accounting for the bag sale, less than 25,000 books remained to be recycled or saved until the fall sale, somewhat fewer than last year. (After the fall sale, everything remaining is recycled, so each year starts anew.) 4 rating bought 81 bags of hardcover fiction. The Children’s Section was filled with parents and children who were delighted to find good classics, fiction, and non-fiction books and magazines still available. I interviewed some of the busy buyers who found time Sarah Gabriele Wertis, one of the sales’s youngest customers It’s always enjoyable to work at the sale. My favorite job is floater—answering questions, guiding people to various sections, straightening shelves, etc. As I was reshelving books in the Health section a couple of shoppers were busily comparing finds behind me, when one of them said she couldn’t find where any prices were marked. I turned and told her that all items were 25 cents. Her mouth dropped and she exclaimed, “You mean a quarter? Everything’s a quarter? Well, that changes my whole strategy!” Another woman was delighted to be shown a whole shelf of fat V.C. Andrews novels in the Occult Section. And a man with two toddlers was pleased to find there were still plenty of children’s puzzles. Then there was the grad student standing in front of the Literary Criticism section lamenting that she hadn’t discovered “ the world’s best book sale” until her last year in Ithaca. “The World’s Best Book Sale” has several goals. When setting the sale prices we keep in mind that, in addition to raising money for the Library and our Outreach programs, we want to make as many books available to as many readers in the community as possible. So we don’t raise our prices too often. And we keep the prices affordable, with decreases as the sale progresses. We’re also interested in seeing the remaining books get into reader’s hands rather than going to the shredders, so we are pleased that the bag sale has generated such interest. Now, we are hard at work preparing for the fall sale, and I will end with a reminder that we are accepting book donations until September 1. Frances Fawcett THE LIBRARY CONNECTION to talk while they filled their bags: Bob Doherty was amazed with the quality of what was left for the bag sale. He found some good “summer music” in records but was disappointed that Mozart was gone. Adrian Bergling, who came with his grandmother, said he was excited by “all sorts of things you can get in a bag for a dollar — movies, books, Adrian Bergling comics, puzzles and games!” Marci Bean said, “I’ve come to the Spring sale (all) four days and each time I buy more!” At 8 months old, Sarah Gabriele Wertis was one of the youngest customers. Her dad, John, said he “comes every year to both sale. We go to the Librar y, too, but it’s nice there’s no overdue fines when you shop at the Booksale.” Deb Bachmann, visiting from Madison, Wisconsin, said “This bag sale is a great idea—I’m going to suggest it to my home library.” Kyllikki Inman Bob Doherty at the bag sale Third Graders from Louisiana Visit the Booksale T he Spring Booksale had ended with the spectacularly successful bag sale on Monday June 9. By Friday the Booksale volunteers and the Probation workers had accomplished a small miracle — all the books to be recycled were off the shelves and disposed of, the tables rearranged and everything ready for the rough sorters to begin work again on Saturday morning. At 1:00 on Friday most of the huge building was dark, deserted and quiet. In the Children’s Section, in the back corner, however, lights were shining brightly, and the sound of excited children’s voices could be heard. This story started at the Sciencenter last winter, when a volunteer, Dani Novak, mentioned to another worker that his daughter taught in a southern school where there were almost no books to read. The second volunteer explained the problem to Suzanne Spitz, an avid volunteer at both the Sciencenter and the Booksale. Suzanne passed this information on to me, because I sort in the Children’s Section. As a result, we sent six boxes of unsaleable children’s books (without covers or in poor condition) to the third grade classroom of Edna Novak at the Edna Novak (back right) and some of the Louisiana families VOLUME VI, ISSUE 3 West Saint John Elementar y School in Elgard, Louisiana. She shared the books with other classrooms in the school and the Booksale received thank you letters and pictures from the children. Early in June, after a winter of fundraising in Louisiana, seven of the children and their parents made a trip to Ithaca. Even though they were told that the building would be empty, the children wanted to see the Louisiana students at the Booksale Booksale site. On Monsite day an anonymous customer bought 7 bags of books at the Bag Sale and on Friday these were displayed in the children’s section. The children and parents had a wonderful time choosing books to take home. The rest were boxed to send back to their school’s library. One of the fathers was given a box of magazines and puzzle books to keep the kids occupied on their trip home. The delightful children who visited were: Coi Duronslet, Justice and Ronnie Feist, Eumekia Jackson, Asasha and Austin Terry and Jasmine Thomas. They and their parents also visited Enfield School, where they have pen pals, the Sciencenter, Stewart Park, Sapsucker Woods and other local attractions. The high point was a visit to Niagara Falls where they went on the Maid of the Mist. Finally there was a large picnic supper and group sing at the Novak’s home for the families and Ithaca people who helped with the visit. Edna Novak did a fantastic job in arranging this wonderful experience for everyone. Laurel Hodgden 5 A Hearty Thanks to Foundation Donors in 2002 In 2002, 802 generous donors contributed $163,026 to the Tompkins County Public Library Foundation. Private gifts to the Library Foundation supplement public funding and create a first-rate community resource. Here’s how some of the donations were put to work: • Sunday hours from September 2002 to May 2003 • New books and materials purchases, including new fiction, CDs, DVDs and videos, classical music recordings, large print books and youth ESL and foreign language materials • Teen writing workshops • An outreach program to encourage a love of reading and libraries among the children of West Village • Planning and marketing activities for community library centers in Danby, Caroline and Lansing • A new endowed book fund to ensure our collection’s future growth As the need for the library’s services continues to swell, private contributions are increasingly important. The investment of countless individuals, foundations, local businesses and corporations, government agencies and civic groups yields dividends for our entire community.
