All too often we fail to make time for reflection, to pause for serious consideration of the accomplishments of our past, and to chart the
course for our future without losing sight of our mission. During the past academic year, Virginia Union University was blessed with the
unique opportunity to reflect upon 150 years of historic achievements during its Sesquicentennial Celebration. We are truly grateful
to the many alumni and friends of Virginia Union University who attended our extensive calendar of events. We sincerely appreciate
all of the academic scholars, political leaders, distinguished alumni, and Virginia Union students who participated in our many 150th
Anniversary events, especially the VUU Choir and First Thursday Group Jazz Ensemble.
We are especially grateful to all of the donors who invested in Virginia Union during our Sesquicentennial. The anniversary marked
the culmination of a seven-year $30 million Comprehensive Campaign and thanks to you we exceeded our goal. The anniversary was
also a groundbreaking period for Virginia Union alumni who met their goal of 1,000 alumni giving a total of one million dollars. Indeed
annual giving during the Sesquicentennial was the highest in the last 18 years.
We continue to celebrate as we move into the new academic year, recording the second highest enrollment in university history, and
increases in retention rates. We now turn our thoughts to the future focus of Virginia Union University and are pleased to share with you
information concerning the Virginia Union University Master Plan, recently approved by the Virginia Union University Board of Trustees.
This issue of the President’s Annual Report is dedicated to the memory of an outstanding alumnus and great educational leader, Dr. Allix
B. James. Dr. James was associated with Virginia Union University for more than 70 years. He received his undergraduate degree in
1944 and was appointed president in 1970. He loved and supported his alma mater, serving as Instructor of Biblical Studies, Professor
of Pastoral Theology, Dean of Students, Dean of the School of Theology, and Vice President. May he rest in peace.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES RESOLUTION PAYING HONOR AND TRIBUTE TO DR. ALLIX BLEDSOE JAMES
WHEREAS, Dr. Allix Bledsoe James earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Virginia Union University in 1944 and a
Master of Divinity Degree from the School of Theology at Virginia Union University in 1946; and
WHEREAS, he served for forty six years as a faculty member and administrator at Virginia Union University, with thirty

or more years in senior administrative posts; and
WHEREAS, Dr. James served as the seventh President of Virginia Union University
from 1970-1979, after which he was appointed President Emeritus; and
WHEREAS, during his tenure as President, an evening program and weekend
college were instituted, a music major was begun, a university band was
organized, an official university logo was established, and, alumni giving increased; and
WHEREAS, Dr. James devoted his life and work as a student and leader at Virginia Union University and was an
outstanding alum, a renowned educator, pastor, and a trailblazer in many areas; and
WHEREAS, he was devoted spiritually and financially to the welfare of the University, and established two endowed
scholarships, one in honor of his father, Samuel H. James, and one in honor of his wife, Sue N. James; and
WHEREAS, the University recognized Dr. James’ contributions in 2015 with the “Martin Luther King Lifetime of Service
Award” presented at the 36th Annual Community Leaders Breakfast, and bestowed its highest honor to Dr. James in
2011 with the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters; and
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Trustees of Virginia Union University wishes to extend heartfelt
sympathy to the family of Dr. Allix Bledsoe James, our fallen President, and to honor and pay tribute to his leadership
at Virginia Union University;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the James legacy and name will always be honored and revered at Virginia Union
University because it is rooted in our history;
BE IT FUTHRER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be presented to the family of Dr. Allix Bledsoe James and a copy be
included in the permanent records of the University.
