Treasure Trove
Provlektion
• Sidorna 38–41 ur Focus on English 9 Textbook och sidan 31 ur övningsboken.

Limerick Treasure Trove
Time to have some fun and enjoy one of the most famous kinds of poems – the
limerick! The name limerick comes from the town of Limerick in the south of
Ireland, but the funny thing is, nobody really knows why. In fact, limericks in
their present form were first written in England in the 1860s! Limericks are supposed to be fun, crazy and entertaining. So, it’s not strange that these poems
are popular in Ireland, because Ireland has always been famous for storytelling,
crazy stories and poetry.
In fact, in the olden days poets were considered to be guardians of knowledge.
A painter, who lived in Great Britain,
Interrupted two girls with their knittin’
He said, with a sigh,
‘That park bench – well I
Just painted it, right where you’re sittin.’
Anonymous
A careless explorer named Blake
Fell into a tropical lake,
Said a fat alligator,
A few minutes later:
‘Very nice, but I still prefer cake’.
Ogden Nash (1902–1971)
There was a young man of Devizes,
Whose ears were of different sizes,
The one that was small
Was no use at all
But the other one won several
prizes.

An elderly man called Keith
Mislaid his set of false teeth –
They’d been laid on a chair,
He’d forgot they were there,
Sat down, and was bitten
beneath.
Anonymous
There was a young lady of Lynn,
Who was so excessively thin,
That when she assayed
To drink lemonade
She slipped through the straw and fell in.
Anonymous
There was an Old Man with a beard,
Who said, ‘It is just as I feared!
Two Owls and a Hen,
Four Larks and a Wren,
Have all built their nests in my beard!’
Edward Lear (1812–1888)
After reading
There was a young lady from Niger,
Who smiled as she rode on a tiger.
They came back from the ride
With the lady inside,
And the smile on the face of the tiger.
