The name limerick comes from the town of Limerick in the south of Ireland, but the funny thing is, nobody really knows why. In fact, limericks in their present form were first written in England in the 1860s! Limericks are supposed to be fun, crazy and entertaining. So, it’s not strange that these poems are popular in Ireland, because Ireland has always been famous for storytelling, crazy stories and poetry. In fact, in the olden days poets were considered to be guardians of knowledge.
