The Patten Pages The William Patten School newsletter for parents and children Issue 54 Week beginning 17th June 2013 Welcome to the latest edition of the Patten Pages! Five and a half weeks to go and so much to cram into that time! International Evening, Passport Day, both Sports days, the amazing Year 6 show, the Year 6 disco, the Year 6 graduation……. We’ll all need a rest! edition 54 of the Patten Pages Year 1 Garden Classroom On Monday 10th June Year 1 were lucky enough to pay another visit to the Garden Classroom in Clissold Park. This time the focus was Maths. After a short introduction from the Garden classroom teacher, Adele, they split into three groups and undertook various maths based activities outside, on the old bowling green. They practised their measuring skills and finding number patterns with minibeasts!. They practised their measuring skills, using a tape measure to find the longest (pretend!) worm and they also went on a shape walk around the garden looking for real 2 and 3D shapes in real life. The children had a short break to enjoy some fruit and a drink before going straight back to work! This time they practised giving directions to some insects to help them find their homes; they also practised their adding and subtraction skills by counting minibeasts and do some more measuring of things in the garden. It was a very busy day and we had lots of fun practising all the maths skills they have been working hard at this year. They were surprised at how much maths we could do outside in the park without a pencil, pen or paper! William Patten Super Readers! We have two more children who have become William Patten Super Readers! May Chalcraft and Rosa Warrington have read five books from the recommended list and written their reviews. So a very big congratulations and well done to both children, who were awarded their certificate in Good Deeds assembly. Chess club go to Pontins After hosting the qualifiers in March we took 4 teams to the South of England Semi Finals at Pontins ,Camber Sands. This was a major achievement for the club for so many teams to qualify, as there are just a handful of state schools in a tournament attended mostly by prep schools such as Dulwich College (who have a Grand master as their coach!) A big congratulations to all the children for competing so well and the captains: Khyal Chowhan U9 team Marcus Andrews U11 team who were awarded with bronze plaques. Well done to Oscar Canning Thompson, who won 6/6 of his games and a fair play award to Jake Evans for swapping teams at the last minute. This year the club has been able to offer more in-depth coaching and all the children have learnt chess notation. Next year the club hopes to get more girls to join and have more external (EPSCA funded)chess coaching. The club would like to thank all the parent helpers and say ‘goodbye’ to all the year 6’s.We would also like to say a very big thank to the club leaders Ed Alves (Noah 4T and Zachary 1K) and Keith Andrews ( Marcus 6B and Martha 3HI) without whom we would not have a club at all! Ed and Keith run the club, organise the schedule, organise the qualifiers, Pontins, and so much more. All of this is done in a voluntary capacity. Next year we will need to recruit new parent helpers to help out………! Visit the William Patten website www.williampatten.sch.uk Page 1 Parlez vous Francais? Frankie Fontenoy used to be a pupil at William Patten and when she was in Year 4, left to live in France. She is now in Year 6 at her French school and was interviewed about the change. Here is the interview, but we have provided a translation for anyone who needs it (Thank you Ihssan!) Frankie as tu connu des problemes d’adapation? Frankie, did you have any problems settling here? Non, meme si mes amis me manquent. Il faut aussi se faire de nouveaux amis et maitrisir une nouvelle langue. No even though I missed my friends, I had to make new friends in order to learn the language. Aupres de qui as tu trouve de l’aide? Who helped you? Aupres de mes parnets bien sur et l’ecole (la maitresse et un autre garcon)My parents of course and school (the teacher and another English boy) As tu la nostalgie de tonpays d’origine? Did you miss your country? Ce qui me manqué le plus: mes amis, Londres le centre equestre et un peu mon ecole What I miss the most are: friends, London, my horse riding school and my school a little bit! Souhaites tu retourner vivre en Angleterre? Do you wish to return to live in England? Au debut, je voulais repartir mais maintenant je suis heureuse d’etre ici. In the beginning I did want to go back, but I am happy here now. Quelles sont les difference entre la France et l’Angleterre What are the differences between England and France? A l’ecole primaire il y avait plus des enfants dans les classes et plus d’arts aussi. En ce qui concerne la cantuine je trouive qu’il y a plus de choix ici et c’est meilleur. In English primary schools, there are more children in the class and we do more art as well. In France, I think the school dinners are better and there is more choice! Year 4 go to the Globe On Friday 7th June, year 4 gathered together and ventured forth on a trip into central London to visit the spiritual home of one of Britain's most famous playwrights. They went off to visit the Globe Theatre, which to those of you who haven't been ( and you really should because it is fantastic) is a replica of the theatre that William Shakespeare and his company of players performed in some 400 years ago. Shakespeare was not only a playwright but an actor himself and performed in his own plays. Both year 4 classes had been studying playscripts in literacy and the trip was a wonderful way for them to see a very important historical theatre in a working capacity. The Globe Theatre has no roof, the reason for this being that in Shakespeare's day plays were mainly performed in the afternoon and there were no electrics or fancy lights so they needed to capitalise on the natural light and having no roof meant they were able to do that. The children found that fascinating. They sat in the audience and were able to see where the "penny stinkers" or "groundlings" as they were most often known would stand to watch a play. The children then went to do a drama workshop based on Romeo and Juliet. The workshop leaders were wonderful and introduced the often feared, language of Shakespeare to the children in an accessible way that they could enjoy. They separated into two groups, the Montagues and the Capulets and took on poses being very formal in their stance and behaviour, as they would in a school photo. They then dropped the mask of being friendly to each other and started insulting each other by saying "Do you bite your thumb at me, sir?", which in Shakespeare's time was akin to accusing someone of swearing at them. The children were able to goad each other by saying two or three lines of Shakespeare to each other and they had fun creating the characters and playing with the language. It was a wonderful day and if you haven't been to visit the Globe, all I can say is do go because it is a truly dramatic experience! What a super achievement! They have just returned from playing in Barcelona. Maybe future England stars too?!!! Year 3 visit the Anatolian Fete in Clissold Park. On Friday 14th June, Year 3 were lucky enough to visit the Anatolian Fete held in Clissold Park. The Fete which lasts for two weeks each year, aims to educate and share the Anatolian culture with the youth in the UK. Year 3 had the opportunity to visit the different stalls to learn about different crafts in the region, such as mosaic making, water marbling and different types of weaving. They also had the chance to taste some of the local cuisine, with one of the favourites being the Maras ice cream! The children were then treated to a performance by the Ottoman Marching Band Concert. The children thoroughly enjoyed the performance and were encouraged to join the band on stage. The whole morning was extremely enjoyable and hopefully we will have the chance to go again next year! Mr. Twit by Jorge Lee (Year 2C) Year 2 have completed their writing assessments and we have chosen some of the super writing to be included in the Patten Pages. Here is the first one, a fantastic description of Mr.Twit by Jorge Lee, 2C Mr Twit is the most repulsive man I have ever seen. Whenever he eats, food gets stuck in his filthy beard and stays there for years and years . Mr Twit is extremely mean and horrible, so horrible that he makes monkeys stand on their heads for hours and hours on end! How mean is that! In my opinion, I think Mr Twit is the most repellent man I have ever heard of. His garden is just as vile as him. He planted thistles and stinging nettles to keep children out because he hates them as much as I hate him! Reception went to Phonics Land! Both Reception classes went on a journey in a Soundmobile to Phonics Land on Wednesday. The Soundcatcher was about, trying to scare the sounds in Phonics Land, so they had to hide! The children had to look in a Soundsack to see which sound needed rescuing and it was the letter “m”. “M” was very shy, so the children had to make a word pie, filled with mmmmmm words to try and get “m” to come out of her hiding spot. The next sound the children went searching for was “a”. the children found”a” stuck in a tree, so they had to climb up to get him. Then it was time for “m” and “a” to go into the blending machine, to see if they could make any words. Together they made “am”! “My favourite bit was when we had to freeze each time we saw the Soundcatcher” Henry RS “ I liked it when we made the wordpie for “m”, we tasted it, it was yummy!” Marleigh RS “I liked pretending to make a picture for “m”, we got to do it so big!” Rudy RS Year 3 going to London Zoo Year 3 went to London Zoo on Thursday 20th July. The children had a wonderful time and enjoyed seeing the giraffes, the aquarium, the gorillas….. The children thoroughly enjoyed the day and as ever the children behaved beautifully! What was the best bit of the day? “Everything!” Abdullah M “When the penguins came out! I put my hand in the pool and thought that the penguins might eat it!” Selina Visit the William Patten website www.williampatten.sch.uk Page 3 Diary Dates Sunday 30th June Tuesday 2nd July Wednesday 3rd July Friday 19th July Monday 22nd July Tuesday 23rd July Wednesday 24th July Summer Fair KS1 Sports Day KS2 Sports Day So far they’ve raised over £4 million for causes throughout the UK.
