Some key facts about alcohol and calories
• The calories in alcohol are often
referred to as “empty calories”
which means they have no
nutritional value and therefore
do not make any significant
contribution to our diet.
• Importantly when people drink a lot
they usually add to these calories
by eating high calorie snacks
(crisps, nuts and takeaways like
kebabs/burgers).
• 3500 calories =1lb in weight. Thus
the average drinker will consume
the equivalent of 18lbs in weight
(nearly one and a half stone per
year) whereas those drinking the
equivalent of a bottle of wine a day
drink the equivalent of 52lbs in
weight (3st/10lbs).
• A person who has either 3 glasses
of wine a day or 1 pint of beer
per day consumes 1200 calories
a week.
• A person who drinks even within
the recommended guidelines
consumes approximately 62,400
calories per year.
• For people who binge (for example
the equivalent of a bottle of wine
per day) this figure is far higher.
They can consume 3500 calories
in one week.
