Proportions Project Menu for Math 1A
This project is worth 50 points. You may choose one of the menu problems below.
Project Options
“100 Feet Tall” Poem
Write a poem like Shel Silverstein’s “One Inch Tall” (and similar in length) which is
copied on the back of this sheet, but change it to “100 Feet Tall”. Your poem
must use some accurate proportional thinking to talk about the sizes of
objects that you would use (ex: bed, pen, etc). Separate from the poem, but
on the white construction paper, show at least four of the proportions you
used to find the size of objects in your poem.
 First measure yourself (round to 4 ft. or 5 ft….convert to inches also)
 Create a proportion for yourself compared to a 100 foot person
 Take that proportion to find the measurements of items you would
use.
 For example:
60 inch person
6 inch pen
(A 120 inch pen would be the length of
____________
= ________
approximately 3 yardsticks!)
1200 inch person
120 inch pen
Write or type and paste, your introductory paragraph stating what you have calculated,
and your poem onto the construction paper. Add your measurements, at least 4
proportions you used, and some colorful graphics (either drawn or printed).
Cooking for 100?
Find a favorite family recipe and the given number of people it serves.
Copy the recipe onto the construction paper (either neatly by hand or
printed and cut). Your recipe must have at least 5 different amounts
for the ingredients. Create a table for the recipe to show amounts if
you wanted to make enough servings for our class (plus the teacher of
course). Scale it again for if you wanted to serve 100 people.
Ingredient
Actual Amount for 10
servings
2 cups
Flour
Amount for Class (20
students)
4 cups
Amount for 100 servings
20 cups
Rewrite the original recipe scaled to serve 100 people. Also include the directions in
case I want to try it myself!
Itty Bitty Bedroom
Recreate your bedroom. Measure the furniture in your bedroom (length and width),
then scale it down to 1 foot= 1/2 inch. Draw an aerial view of your bedroom with your
furniture drawn in the new scale. Label the items and measurements with proportions.
Here’s an example:
1 foot
_____ =
½ inch
6 feet
_____
3 inches
If your bed was 6 feet long it would equal 3 inches. So your
drawing would include a 3 inch long bed.
Bed
1 ft.
6 ft.
½ in. = 3 in.
Bedside table
1 ft. 1.5 ft. diameter
½ in.= ¾ in. diameter
Project Requirements
(Be sure to go through this checklist.)
 Project is either typed or very neatly handwritten.
 Project is presented on a piece of white 10x12 construction paper
 All original measurements must be included, along with
any pictures, art, etc. (You may want to show your original and scaled
measurements in table form.)
 All proportions and work are shown.
 All work must be clearly titled and labeled with units shown.
 Write an introductory paragraph for each option you choose. Make it
very obvious what you are calculating.
 If needed, convert large answers into feet or yards.
 Have fun with this project. It’s ok to be creative as long as you meet all of the
project requirements.
 PROJECT IS DUE ON FRIDAY, APRIL 11, 2014
