Dear Student,
We are so pleased that you considering Manteca Adult School as a means for furthering your education. We
know that making a choice to come back to school is challenging, and we are delighted to offer you an
opportunity to continue learning. Whether you are coming to learn English, to further your career, or to just
expand your knowledge, we are happy to serve.
There have been a lot of changes in the adult school program. Funding from the state has given us the
opportunity to grow our program to meet student needs. The government of California has recognized the
need for adult schools to offer career and college pathways to adults. With that in mind, Manteca Adult School
is changing. We are offering certification programs as well as English as a Second Language, digital learning,
and educational foundation programs. We will continue to offer high school diploma opportunities and support
for those adults who would like to take the GED® or HiSET® High School Equivalency assessments.
You will notice that we are also moving to an online registration program. We will continue to offer registration
in our office in addition to our digital program. Moreover, there is a lot of information that we are seeking as
you register. This is in response to our new state funding. To maintain and grow our funding opportunities, the
state is requiring that we collect information from our students and then monitor our students’ successes. This
information is, as always, confidential.
As our funding continues to grow, so will Manteca Adult School. We are partners in the Delta Sierra Regional
Alliance, an organization that works with local adult schools, San Joaquin Delta College, and many local
businesses in order to create college and career pathways. Please visit http://deltasierraadulted.org/ for
more information.
Manteca Adult School is on the verge of becoming a center of learning for careers in the logistics field. We are
working with JM Equipment in Manteca and offering hands-on training in forklift certification and scissor and
boom lift certification. Additionally, we are offering OSHA safety training programs to support our local industry
sector needs. Our logistics program will continue to expand as we work with local industry experts.
We are working with Manteca Unified School District as well. Our population is growing and we know there is
a need for support in our schools. Paraprofessionals are essential to student success and Manteca Unified is
actively seeking aides for our classrooms. We are offering single session classes to assist those who would like
to pass the Paraprofessional 1 test and become a paraprofessional for Manteca Unified.
We are continuing to offer courses that allow for personal growth as well. Yoga, guitar, computer, and welding
courses are all available to you for a nominal fee.
Finally, we have included a survey in our catalog. We want to know what you are interested in. We would
appreciate your input as we continue to grow.
Thank you again for considering Manteca Adult School as your educational resource. We are so happy to
welcome you back to school.

High School Transcripts:
The school counselor evaluates each prospective
student’s transcripts to determine diploma credit needs. It is the student’s
responsibility to order transcripts from any previous high school programs before
registering to allow time for review and avoid any delay. MAS charges $5.00 for
an official copy of MAS transcript.
Assessments: All students must complete assessments before beginning class and
at the end of each semester before course credit will be issued.
Diploma Computer-Assisted Learning: Computer-assisted learning allows
students to work at their own level in a self-paced program with teacher guidance.
Class assignments and tests must be completed in class. Students may, with teacher
permission, work beyond the prescribed hours at home. Courses must be completed
within the semester for full credit.
Enrollment: There are no fees required to enroll in high school diploma classes.
Failure to complete at least one class in a semester will result in a “drop” from the
program, requiring re-enrollment.

High School Equivalency
HiSET or GED Credential
(GENERAL EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT)
The GED® (General Education Development) and the HiSET® tests measure essential
academic skills and concepts of a traditional high school education. Students passing
all tests receive a California State-issued California High School Equivalency Certificate,
which meets the diploma requirements of most employers, trade schools and colleges.
The GED® consists of four tests: Reasoning through Language Arts, Mathematical
Reasoning, Science, and Social Studies. The passing score for GED® is 145 on each
section. The GED® test is computer based and is made up of multiple choice questions,
drag and drop, Hot Spot, Fill in the Blank, Short Answer, and extended response. To
register for the GED® test, please go to www.GED.com to set up an account.
The HiSET® is an alternative to the GED® test and is given in a computer or paperbased format. The HiSET® consists of five parts: Language Arts-Reading, Language
Arts-Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. To register for the HiSET®
please go to www.hiset.ets.org.
Test Accommodations:
Both GED® and HiSet® offer accommodation through their respective websites. The
purpose of accommodations is to provide test takers with full access to the tests.
Reasonable and appropriate accommodations are provided to individuals with
documented disabilities who demonstrate a need for accommodations.
Accommodations are individualized and considered on a case-by-case basis. Please
visit the appropriate websites if accommodations are needed.
GED® and HiSet® Test Services and Schedule
Manteca Adult School is currently a HiSet® test center and will become a GED® test
center during the 2016-2017 school year. Dates will be available from the office
and posted on our website. Seating for each test session is limited and preregistration through the appropriate test website is required.
Candidates must register online. On-line scheduling will also be available on the
Manteca Adult School website, www.mantecausd.net. Assistance will be provided to
those candidates needing it.
GED® and HiSET® tests are available in Spanish. Requests for tests in Spanish must
be made upon registration.
Test Security:
Candidates must provide a valid picture ID (Driver’s License, DMV California ID or
passport) and verification that they are a California resident and 18 years of age or
within 60 days of 18th birthday when they arrive at the testing center. GED requires
that each candidate is photographed on the date of testing upon checking in.
9
High School Diploma and Equivalency Preparation Classes:
Computer-assisted learning allows students to work at their own level in a selfpaced program with teacher guidance. GED® and HiSET® pre-tests determine
academic skill level and knowledge for program placement. Practice tests taken
periodically help monitor student progress and readiness for GED® or HiSET® tests.
Preparation workbooks are available for sale in the office. Students taking High
School Equivalency Preparation Classes should be fluent English or Advanced ESL.






The Adult School diploma is not WASC accredited.
MAS does not have a school code for FAFSA or Cal Grants.
The Military currently will not accept Manteca Adult School
diploma as a Tier 1 diploma.
It depends on what the student plans on using the diploma
for:
o Some employers and post high school institutions
will not accept a non-accredited diploma such as a
high school equivalency, but others will.
o It is important to have an idea of what your next
step will be before deciding on a program.
HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY scores can be used to access
financial aide at post high school institutions.
HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY can be used as proof of high
school equivalency at some post high school institutions.
Adult School diploma allows the student to check HS
graduate or equivalent on job applications.
No. Anyone who is 18 or who had the opportunity for four
years in high school is eligible to attend a community college
such as San Joaquin Delta College or Modesto Junior
College.
Remember that Community College courses require tuition
and assessment tests. Classes that students are allowed to
take are based on assessment test performance.
The benefit of taking HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY/Adult
School diploma courses are that they will help students
improve the skills students need to perform well on the
community college assessments or on any other academic
assessments.
Students will sign up and pay for the test(s) at GED.com
when students are ready.
o Students are not required to take the HIGH SCHOOL
EQUIVALENCY prep courses, but it is strongly
recommended.
The hardest working students in the Adult Education
diploma program earn between 45 and 60 credits per year.
The amount of credits earned depends on:
o How dedicated the student is to the program
o How strong student’s attendance is
o How much effort the student commits to the
program

Manteca Adult




It depends on the program.
o Students may be required to show mastery in one
program before students are allowed to move up a
level.
o If assessments qualify students for HIGH SCHOOL
EQUIVALENCY/Adult School Diploma, Students can
change between programs based on need.
Enrollment is a first come-first served basis.
Diploma students must complete classes within the
semester to earn credit.
If students fail to attend on a regular basis, students may be
dropped.
o If dropped, students will have to re-enroll and pay
any re-enrollment fees that are due.
Manteca Adult School subscribes to a computer assisted
program called Grad Point.
o Students earn credits based on completion of
subject matter course work.
o Each course has a set number of lessons. Students
will have to show mastery in each lesson before
they are allowed to move on to the next module.
o Some courses are sequential. This means that
students must complete every lesson and posttests.
o Most courses are prescriptive. This allows students
to test out of portions of the curriculum when you
demonstrate mastery.
o If a student scores an 80% or better on a pre-test,
that student will be allowed to move on to the next
lesson. All post-tests assess all lessons within the
module.
o Credits will be awarded once all lessons are
completed and post-tests are passed. Teachers will
verify that all work has been completed and
passed.
o Most subjects have two five-credit courses.
 Example: Algebra 1A and Algebra 1B to
represent first and second semester
course work.
Every student will have access to one-on-one support from
the teacher.
Courses are NOT modified to reflect a special education
curriculum.
Students receiving special education services in traditional
high school will need to meet with the counselor to discuss
CAHSEE waiver eligibility.
Special education is a function of the K-12 educational
system. Students must exit from special education before
eligibility in Adult Education.
