Penguin Class Weekly Update and Homework 22.9.16

Penguin Class Weekly Update and Homework 22.9.16
[email protected]
We’ve had a very busy productive week in Penguin Class exploring Antarctica. We’ve used video and phot
stimulus to inspire our descriptive writing and have learnt all about nouns, adjectives and noun phrases. We
are focussing on sentence writing skills, adding appropriate adjectives to improve our sentences, whilst
remembering capital letters for proper nouns, days of the week/months and to start our sentences.
Our geography has focussed on the world learning the names of the continents and labelling on maps.
We’ve read a story called Penguin Small who begins a journey from the North Pole to the South Pole. He
has many troubles along the way, but with the help from some friends he makes his journey and is delighted
to be reunited with his friends. We have discussed this story and related it to our own learning journeys,
our feelings when something is hard or tricky and how we need to persevere and work together to reach
our goals.
In maths this week we have continued to work on number, counting and place value and looked particularly
at partitioning (splitting) numbers in different ways. For example 15 = 10 + 5, 15 = 5+5+5, 15 = 5+5+3+2
Thank you for your feedback on last week’s maths homework and spellings work. We really value your
comments and your child’s comments and have spent some time reflecting on these with the children in
class.
This year for our Harvest work we are thinking about ‘food and clothing, near and far.’ As a
voluntary donation we invite you to bring one, the other or both as you’re able. Please don’t buy
clothing, let it be part of a clear out. The food will impact people close by in Leeds; however, the
clothing will contribute to a running refugee collection.
Homework
Please practise our harvest song. The words are in your child’s folder with a link to Youtube
to help with the tune.
Reading
Please support us in ensuring good reading habits are established by recording your child’s home reading in
their reading record books with appropriate positive comments. Encourage your child to write their own
comment. Do you have any stories you could share with Penguins in?
Maths
There is a model of splitting numbers included in your homework folder. Please make some of your own
examples up. You can choose numbers below 10 or between 0 and 100. Explore and find as many different
ways as you can.
Spelling
Please keep referring to the common exception words which were sent home last week. It is important that
these words are regularly revisited and applied correctly in all the children’s writing. We will add the Year
2 common exception words to the children’s files for your reference too. This week we have sent home a
spelling practice sheet with spellings for your child to learn. These focuses on long vowel phoneme
alternatives. If your child is confident with these then have a go at finding more examples with these
phonemes. Write sentences using these words or complete one of the ideas for spelling activities from the
sheet in your child’s folder.
